OK, this Thursday night the 2002 Aussie rules season kicks off.

I know Americans have NO IDEA about AFL football. Thats cool - this is for fun only.

I have set up a tipping competition for VHF users. Feel free to join in, even if you know NOTHING about the game. I'll post news and info through the season, and hopefully a few people will join in and have some fun with it.

Additionally, if you've ever seen Aussie Rules on TV or somewhere, and wondered WTF is going on, heres your chance to find out. I'll fill in on some rules etc and HOPEFULLY be able to post the odd vid clip etc.

What the hell else you gonna do? Sit round waiting for VH to make a record?

Providing a few people actually join in, (LOL!) I'll start putting brief team profiles up this week before the first game to give anyone whos joining in some idea of where to start.

    Heres how to join in:

Go to www.oztips.com and register yourself a profile

Now go the main page of this site, click on the 'I want to join a competition' link

    the competition number is 14842
the comp password is van halen

And thats it. the tips page and everything should now be available. teams listed first are playing at home. its 1 point for a win, 0 for a loss. 2 bonus points if you get all 8 games right. If you forget your tips you'll be allocated all away games.

    OK, who's up for it?

    Goo,

You'd be surprised, but Aussie Football was a cult favorite in the 1980's. Back then ESPN was new and showed a lot of Aussie Football. If anybody here has Fox Sports World you can catch it there sometimes. I know it's not the same, but I played a little rugby in college and really enjoyed it.

C’mon sports fans. try something new!

Trying to stir some intrest. Wanna get about half dozen guys on board.

Collingwoods Chris Tarrant rises above a pack of players to take a mark (catch)

Gary Moorcroft of Essendon takes uses some other guy as a springboard to take the
    mark of the year, 2001.

    Pre - season guide
    --------------------------

    Adelaide Crows

Glory days of the mid 90’s seem to be fading. They’ll win a fair share of games,
especially at home but it’s hard to see them making the finals again. Time to start
    thinking bout rebuilding

    Brisbane Lions

Last years champions and should be up there again. Would have to share favoritism
with Essendon. They are a little under-done preparation wise however and could have
a rough start to the year. Premiership ‘hangovers’ are always another factor with teams
    coming off a flag.

    Carlton Blues

Too many losses to cover, and rely on too much from too few. Could be time they
look at rebuilding, their list is getting old (Craig Bradley is 38 fergodsakes!) However I
have been saying these guys are too old for 10 years and they still manage to finish up
there. Finals are seen as a birthright.

    Collingwood Magpies

The team I follow. So expect a lot of bias LOL. Seriously though, After winning the
flag in 1990, Collingwood proceeded to slide steadily into a mess, both on and off the
feild. In 1999 though, a broom was taken through the entire staff, both on and off feild,
and slowly the rewards are coming. I would expect to see these guys finish in the finals
for the first time since 1994. Probably 12 months or so off a serious assault on the flag
yet though. Injuries could be a factor.

    Essendon Bombers

Last years runners-up to Brisbane and probably have more to prove than any other
team. They’ve won 64 of their last 72 games, its hard to see they won’t be there right
    till the end.

    Fremantle Dockers

Can’t get any worse. Expect some mild improvement but they’ll still finish in the last 4.

    Geelong Cats.

Another last 4 finisher. Have started rebuilding but any results seem a long way away.

    Hawthorn Hawks

Any team that wears brown with yellow clearly shouldnt be trusted. Hawthorns a
contender, but they need to find a balance. They won their first 8 games last year, then
lost 9 of the next 14. A good mix of youth, experience, speed and height. Possible top
    4 contender.

    The Kangaroos

Formerly North Melbourne Kangaroos. Decided not to have a ‘home town’ so now
everyone can dislike them equally. Mid 90’s power club, but seems to be flying apart at
the seams now, theyre getting older and slower, and face the year without their star
captain Wayne Cary, who quit after getting sprung fucking his vice captains wife in the
toilet at a party (as Marty mentioned earlier). Expect to see these guys totally self
    destruct.

    Melbourne Demons.

Seem to be in trouble. Grand finallists 2 years ago, off field dramas turned into on-feild
chaos. Could do anything, but probably will not.

    Port Adelaide

Certain top 4 finish for these guys. If they get over their finals hoodoo they could go
all the way. Expecting big things.

    Richmond Tigers

Shocked everyone by becoming a decent team last year. Top 4 contender, however
Richmond rarely follows up a good year with another good year.

    St Kilda Saints

Horrible. Their board is crazy, their players are drunks. Noone knows who the hell
    their coach is. Last.

    Sydney Swans

Look good on paper, but the list is aging badly. Injuries will tell the story.

    Western Bulldogs.

Slightly crazy, but usually finish thereabouts the middle. Depends how their younger
    players develop.

    West Coast Eagles

In a rebuilding phase, wouldnt expect to see them in the finals

Season starts late Wednesday night/Early Thursday morning US time.

Not many 7 figure sums mate. Quite a few 6 figure salaries though. You've also gotta remember that the money these guys get in US dollars is half what they get in AUD. Do any NFL players get 7 figure salaries? If they do that's some serious cash!!!

Most starting NFL players are making a seven figure or high six figure salary. I would bet the average NFL quarterback makes 3 to 5 million a year. I think the NFL minimum salary is $250,000, not bad for 16 weeks of work.

Goo, I'm in. I actually spent 6 months in Australia about 10 years ago at a university in Armidale, N.S.W, and had a chance to watch the game. I can't remember the rules all to well but the game was exciting to watch.
