Does anyone have a Playstation 2 and use a mod chip? I've heard that you can play copied games with them and the Gameshark utility.

    My questions are:

What's the best mod chip for the buck in your opinion?

Most mod chips make you use an original CD to start and then flop to the copied one. Can you use an original PS1 game to start a copied PS2 game?

Is there any special software you need to copy EA Sports games? I've heard they've started protecting their products and that certain mod chips won't be able to play them.

Any and all information from you guys would be much appreciated.

I don't own a PS2, but my PSOne is modded and I'd reccommend one that doesn't require you to use a boot CD and a fast swap. My PSOne mod chip is recent enough that it was even designed to bypass the mod protection newer games (specifically Capcom ones) have encorporated into them.

Now, I don't really know why you'd want a mod chip for a PS2 unless you had a schlode of bootleg PSOne games or loved to import games, since PS2 games are DVD and probably can't be copied all that easily.

Although I haven't tried to copy a DVD or a PS2 game I know there is a way to do it with a standard read/write drive. Probably need some software for it. That's another thing I'm checking into.

I don't even have a PS2 yet. I won't buy one unless I can mod it. I'm looking into everything first before I go and spend the cash.

I'm pretty sceptical about that. CDRW drives simply can't write DVDs. You'd need a writeable DVD drive. Those go for a bit over $350 now.

I know I've seen software advertised that claims they can copy DVD's with a standard read/write drive, but I don't know if it works. Could just be a scam.

Also, I don't even know where to find blank DVD's or how much they cost.

That's why I'm posting here. Hopefully a fellow VH fan has the whole thing in place and can tell me what I need to do.

blank DVD's are still over $10 a piece. those "copy any DVD" offers are scams, they're just a collection of software to make VCD's, and most of that software is available free elsewhere.

i hear that you can copy PS2 DVD discs, but the mod chip is needed because part of the copy protection is to have intentional bad sectors on the PS2 disc, which a burner can't duplicate. so if a copied disc doesn't have the bad sector in the proper place, the copy won't work. the mod chip makes those discs bootable.

Apple sells DVD-R discs for $5 each. I'm sure they can be found cheaper than that.

What I need to know is:

    1) How do you copy the games? Standard copy software onto a CD-R (doubtful) or special copy software on blank DVD's?

    2) What mod chip is most recommended

I'm trying to see if this is even worth my time/money.

Figure $350+ for a drive, and at least $5 for each media. As for the rest, maybe a google search would come up with something? That, or perhaps a look at some newsgroups.

it's gotta be burned onto a DVD, by a DVD drive. a CDR won't hold that much data.

sometimes the question pops up on vcdhelp.com, in their forums. i'll see if i can dig anything else up...

If that's the case then it's totally out of the question. My cap figure is about $300.00 total. I can't justify spending over $600.00 on a game system.

Are you sure you can't copy a PS2 game with a standard CDRW drive?

The PS2 uses it's DVDROM to read the games. They're put into DVD format to hold all the information needed to be stored on the media. That being the case, you will need a DVDR drive to burn that type of information. Otherwise you'll need more than one disc which I don't know how you'd burn one disc onto two.

I was under the impression that you could copy the DVD onto another DVD using the CDRW drive. If I need a DVDRW drive I can't do this.
