I need to know if I'm getting ripped off. I had a little 2 1/2 hour Bon Jovi fest at my house last week gearing up for their upcoming concert in Raleigh (no slams please! ). Now, we were CRANKIN' these tunes the entire time and when I felt the top of the receiver I was shocked - the damn thing was HOT! Then about 15 minutes later, the thing shuts itself down. I thought it was just the protection circuitry, and I assumed shutting it off for 1/2 hour would solve the problem - NOT! The next morning it would not turn on. When I plugged it in, I could hear a click, but when the power button was pushed nothing would happen.

Anyways, the shop says it's the power supply blah, blah, blah something. When I asked what they thought caused it, the lady would not say and said they don't let the technicians speak to the customers! They want $135 to fix it and I think I'm getting ripped off. It seems like a simple fix that I could probably do myself.

I need advice here guys and gals - thanks!

Probably is the power supply... although it's hard to say with out running some serious testing/diagnostics. You could do it yourself but I'll bet the powersupply would cost 3/4 of what they quoted you...

Heat is not your friend in most consumer electronics... and cranking a reciever does generate some heat. Down the road be sure your cabinet is well ventilated as a preventative.

$135 plus parts and labor or is that the total bill? Mine did the same thing a few years back, but mine happened listening to Tool and not Jon Bon Jovi price was about the same.

ZZ - it sits on top of my TV with no components on it, so I thought it was well enough ventilated. I guess I need to add a fan to it.

chewy - that price was for the total.

It's expensive to get consumer electronics repaired, largely because they're designed to be replaced instead of fixed.

That price sounds about right. Mine works still after a few years.

I didn't trust 'em so I just picked it up and pulled the panel and all six fuses look to be good. I was hoping to find some kind of reset switch in there, but no. I think this may've happened because I had two other components plugged into the back of my receiver at the time, and maybe that put undue stress on it.

Hey dirty, did you try unplugging it for a few minutes? Sometimes thats all it takes to reset itself.

Yup! Happened to two different stereos I had. Now the important thing to mention here is that the first one fried, and I started to dig around to try and fix it myself you know.........and.......anyway, that one died The other stereo I took it in to have it fixed and it still works today. Moral of this story is this: sometimes, even though it sucks, it is best to take these things in to the stereo fixer dudes.

LOL. I hear ya Chewy. Last night I took it to a place that specializes in stereos (not stereos, VCRs, DVDs, TVs, toasters, can-openers, etc.) and they gave me a better price and faster turn-around time.
