I'm thinking about getting a camcorder sometime soon. I've been looking for some info on the web but it's all confusing.

what's the difference between Hi 8 and dv??
I notice there's a big price difference

anyone know of a good digital camcorder with stereo sound and good effects options ???

plus the ability to easily line out audio/video

???

Sorry, I can't answer your questions, but Amazon.com can. In their electronics section, they have pages of informative "buying guides" that lists the information you're looking for. Worth looking at, even if you don't buy from there.

Go to here for the buying guide.

Hi 8 is an analog format. You can't pull the info over to your computer easily to edit it. Digital8 is a proprietary Sony format that lets you use Hi 8 tapes and move the video to the computer easily. Digital8 is mostly targeted towards folks who already have Hi 8 camcorders (it'll let you play old analog tapes and use the slightly less expensive Hi 8 tapes). Digital8 cameras are bulkier than their MiniDV counterparts. MiniDV is the industry standard for digital home video. There's a ton of MiniDV camcorders (some under $400 now) in all sorts of sizes and feature ranges.

If you want to go digital and play with editing movies (which seems to be your bag, hain) on the computer, get Digital8 or MiniDV. You'll need a Firewire card for the computer.

at the moment I have an ATI all in wonder card with a chord that attaches to an "avi in" or "out" port. the chord uses RCA connectors for both audio and video. do the digital cameras not have rca out plugs or do you HAVE to have a Firewire card??

If you want to go digital, you've got go Firewire. The DV format takes up 212mb per minute. It's far beyond the quality your ATI card can capture.

Depends. If you want a DV camcorder, you'll bring it in through a Firewire port. You could get by with analog if you're happy with the quality and the capture rate.

I should add that I don't know much about analog video. I've been playing with the DV stuff since February though, and it's pretty cool. The software actually takes control of the camera on import and export. One of these days I'll have to get a DVD burner.

so is there a difference between Hi8 and digtial Hi8 or are they the same thing?

I'm just wondering about Hi8-- being that it's analog . it just seems that Hi8 might be more in my price range and go better with the video card I have.

They're the same tapes, but the format that's written on them is different. It sounds like you've got all the stuff to work with analog, and if that's in your price range go for it. I'd love to see what you can come up with.

oh, and I need to get one that I can fit into either my pants or my girlfriends pants to sneak into concerts!

plus that little sucker has to have a stereo mic~!!
and maybe be able to take off the mic and put on a different one if I want to( to put a mic on the other side of the room, etc)

I just don't want to go Hi 8 if they will be obsolete in a couple of years--but that won't happen anytime soon will it?

go MiniDV if you can afford it. i've got a Canon ZR-10, and my roommate's got a Canon ZR-40. too easy to use, and his has a USB port as well as the Firewire so he can dump still images into the computer easier (i have to pause and capture a still in my editing program). i've been transferring old clips and stuff from VHS and Beta tapes i've had lying around for years to the Canon, then into the computer...now i need a faster machine to render videos in less time. i'm planning on a DVD drive around Xmas, i'm hoping they'll be around $300 by then.

if you're going to be doing a lot of VHS or satellite/cable to digital transfer, try to find a cam with a digital passthrough. some Sony units will convert analog to DV without having to put stuff on tape.

our Canons are too big to sneak into a show. they do have stereo mic jacks. and analog video in/out. not only DV, but digital audio, too...

A bigger girlfriend will be cheaper than a smaller camera. Way cheaper.
