ok, somewhere along the way, some spammer has somehow infiltrated my computer and reprogrammed my internet start page...
no matter what i do, i reset the homepage in my settings, if i shutdown my computer, it always comes back to the same damn home page that i don't want!!!
i've tried the obvious fixes (i think...) from the toolbar, but can't get it fixed...

somebody get me a (computer) doctor!!!

    thanks

For starters, if you have a virus checker, I would run it right about now. If you don't have a virus checker, go to HouseCall, which is a free virus scan...

Go to the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel. You'll probably find a program in there you've never seen before. That's how most of these losers get the home page to keep changing. I also suggest emptying your temp files and cookies.

What is the name of the start page that comes up? There is some pretty fucked up spyware these days, I got one from lop.com that took me 2 hours to clean up. Let me know and I will dig it up for you.

right click on your internet explorer icon

select properties, then retype your home page in the white box and click "use current" and then "ok"

then go to CNET.com and download "Zone Alarm"--a good free firewall

Well if its a spyware app that's hosing the start page I doubt you will be able to change it because most of them have an executable hidden that will attach itself to your browser which won't allow you to change your settings. If hain23x's idea doesn't work you can search for *.exe and then sort by modified and you will probably find the one that's fucking you up.

    Yeah, get Ad-Aware - www.lavasoftusa.com.

Why the actions of some of these advertisers and spyware doesn't border on criminal is absurd to me.

What virus did it say you have? Do a search for that on the internet via google or altavista, see what else you can come up with for it. Viruses suck!

that found the virus, but the instructions to repair it did nothing to help </font>[/QUOTE]If you've run a virus scanner, and the problem is still existing, it's sounding, as has been mentioned, like you may have some kind of trojan creepy-crawlie in your system. There are a few routes that you might elect to go at this problem from.

You haven't specified, so we'll go off the presumption that you're running Internet Explorer (Netscape, you'd go at it pretty much the same, just a few minor variances).

First off, click TOOLS, from the "File, Edit, View..." toolbar up top; then select "Internet Options". This will give you a dialog box showing your home page. Make sure that's pointing where you want it to be. If you wanted Bob.com and through whatever way, it's changed to Doug.com, it doesn't matter whatcha do, you're going to Doug.com first thing off... so make sure that's pointing to your desired location.
Check that, and let me know if that's the problem; if not, we'll keep digging... no point in going into 6 or 7 volumes, if a couple paragraphs will fix things.
