Reliable sources have advised IGN FilmForce that director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas may have found the scribe they want to pen the fourth Indiana Jones movie: Frank Darabont. The Oscar-nominated writer-director of such films as The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Majestic is no stranger to scripting the adventures of the whip-cracking archaeologist. Darabont was one of the writers on the short-lived TV series The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, which Lucas produced.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have lined up a thirty-one-date U.S. tour to launch on June 27th in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The band will test run material from their upcoming record, The Golden Circle, though make no mistake about it, there will be no such Golden Circle VIP seats at these Petty shows. "I've gotten into this whole golden-circle thing," Petty said of the album's title, "about how they sell these seats down front at the venues with the names of the big companies. And it drives me nuts."
The tour will be something of a Heartbreakers reunion, as original bassist Ron Blair has rejoined the band. Blair, who jammed with Petty and the Heartbreakers during their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March, has officially replaced Howie Epstein, who replaced him in 1982.

According to a statement, "the band has parted ways with Howie Epstein because of his ongoing personal problems." Late last year, Epstein was arrested along with Carlene Carter, after they were pulled over in New Mexico while driving a car that was reported as stolen. Police retrieved a small amount of heroin from the vehicle.

As for The Golden Circle, Petty and the Heartbreakers have been working with producer George Drakoulias (the Black Crowes), as well as Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann) on the album, which is slated for an October release. "I feel that what we're doing is every bit as relevant as we've ever been," Petty said. "The great thing is that it's not over. I hope I'm not getting the gold watch."

Some tickets for the tour are currently available in a pre-sale at www.tompetty.com, with tickets for the first six dates going on sale to the general public on May 18th.

    Queensryche Guitarist Kelly Gray Exits

Guitarist Kelly Gray has left the Seattle-based progressive metal act Queensryche. The artist joined the band in 1998, replacing co-founder Chris DeGarmo. He appeared on the band's 1999 Atlantic album "Q2K" and last year's "Live Evolution" collection. In the early '80s, Gray played in the band Myth with Queensryche vocalist Geoff Tate.

According to Tate, Gray came into the band with the understanding that he was not a permanent member, and that he actually departed last November. "Working with Kelly was really fun at the time," Tate tells Billboard.com. "I think we sort of came to a place where having him stay in the band would kind of limit him and limit us, so we decided to part ways and do different things."

Queensryche has not hired a steady replacement and most likely will not do so, opting instead to collaborate with different songwriters when the need arises instead. "We've decided to work with outside writers and different people that we admire," he says, noting that remaining Queensryche guitarist Michael Wilton will play all the guitar parts and will be joined by other "guest players."

It has been strongly rumored that DeGarmo is recording with Queensryche for its next studio album. Tate says this is not true, but when asked if there were plans for DeGarmo to work with his old bandmates in the future, he replies, "I don't want to say 'yes' and I don't want to say 'no,' because [Chris] might call up one day and say, 'Hey, I've got some songs and I'm really interested in recording with you guys. You wanna do it?' and then I'd have to eat my words. So I'll say there are no plans at the moment, but the door is open."

Tate reveals that about half of Queensryche's next studio album has been written; he hopes those duties will be completed before he goes on the road this summer to support his self-titled Sanctuary solo debut. Wilton is working on material with his side band Soulbender, and drummer Scott Rockenfeld recently released an album with the group Slave To The System, whose lineup includes Gray.

Fred Durst is about to start "Rollin'," for real.

The Limp Bizkit frontman will direct "Lords of Dogtown," a feature-film adaptation of the current big-screen documentary "Dogtown and Z-Boys" which details the origins of skateboarding. Production is scheduled to start in late summer, according to Durst representatives at the Firm.

The nonfictional account tells the tale of a group of surfers who take their extreme moves to the street and then the world. What starts as a few dudes sliding around emptied, in-ground swimming pools evolves into a full-fledged sport worth millions of dollars in sponsorships and televised events such as ESPN's X-Games.

Stacy Peralta, the skate legend who directed the "Dogtown and Z-Boys" documentary, has penned the script to "Lords."

Although casting is yet to be completed, the filmmakers are looking for fresh faces to play the roles of Jay Adams, Tony Alva and Peralta. Contemporary pro skaters are also expected to land parts.

Over the last two years, Durst, who has directed more than 25 music videos for Limp Bizkit and other artists, announced his directorial involvement with three different feature films: "Runt," "Life Without Joe" and "Wanna Be" .Production has yet to begin on any of the movies, though Durst reps expect "Lords" to be first on his docket.

Despite so many projects on his plate — and Limp Bizkit without a guitarist — Durst still plans to record a follow up to 2000's Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. No release date has been announced.

NEWS - John Mellencamp Leaves Columbia, Working On Boxed Set, DVD, & Play
    05/17/2002

(5/17/02, 4 p.m. ET) -- John Mellencamp and Columbia Records have ended their relationship, reportedly on good terms. Mellencamp said, "It was a good arrangement at a good time, because the company I had been associated with for 20 years, Mercury/Polygram, was passing into history, and my former manager, Tommy Mottola, was at Sony, so the fit was a helpful one. Now, with the whole business in transition, it'd be nice to explore more options."

The deal resulted in two albums for Columbia -- 1998's John Mellencamp, and 2001's Cuttin' Heads -- and hit singles including "Your Life is Now" and "Peaceful World."

Mellencamp said some other record companies have already approached him, but he's in no rush to sign a new deal -- "I'm only interested in doing things I haven't ever done before. For me, frankly, that's the way I've always preferred it."

That doesn't mean he plans to take it easy this year, though. In addition to a month-long tour that kicks off July 3 in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, Mellencamp is working on a boxed set called Nothing Like We Planned for Universal Music, which will feature a large amount of unreleased music. He hopes to have the collection finished by the end of the year.

He's also working on a career-spanning DVD that will include unreleased songs, archival footage of him going back to his earliest days in the music business, a special performance session, and some historical material on his family, including the clan's musical roots and pioneer background. No release date has been announced yet.

Finally, Mellencamp is finishing up work on a stage musical, and his collaborator is horror novelist Stephen King. Of the show, Mellencamp said, "Stephen's done a great story, and I've written some songs we both love, and we're real excited about breaking the mold with the project."

Fans can look for Blade 2 on DVD before the end of summer. New Line has announced that September 10th is the target date for the home-video release of the action-gore-fest.

The original Blade set sales records when it was released to a then-young DVD market. Like many of New Line's discs, Blade was packed with extras and helped define the key ingredients for a hit movie presentation.

No doubt Blade 2 will receive a similar treatment. Director Guillermo del Toro was already instrumental in making sure Blade2.com felt like a DVD extras disc even before the movie opened

The latest actor to suit up for a comic-book role is X-Men's James Marsden, who'd like to play the lead in Tank Girl director Rachel Talalay's independently produced, $20 million adaption of writer Garth Ennis' DC series The Preacher. "It's about a guy [who's] struck by lightening while he's preachin sermon and inherits the power of the word of God," says Maarsden. "It's very dark." Marsden is trying to figure out the scheduling, with X-Men 2 due to begin filming in June.

    Hernandez Adapting Greatest American Hero
    Monday, May 20, 2002 12:07 CDT

Variety says that Disney has hired Paul Hernandez to adapt the early 1980s TV series "The Greatest American Hero" for the big screen.

The story concerns a nebbishy teacher who becomes a reluctant superhero after extraterrestrials give him a special suit with powers he can barely understand or control when he loses its instruction manual.

The film will reference the old series, but in the update there is more than one suit floating around the world, adds the trade.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones finished first at the box office over the weekend, taking in an estimated $86.2 million for a four-day opening on $116.3 million. However, the film failed to better any of the opening records that Spider-Man set two weeks ago.

Spider-Man took in $46 million over the weekend for a total of $286.5 million in 17 days. Spider-Man now ranks 14th all-time and has easily moved past both Men in Black and Batman as the top-grossing comic-book film.

"I think we're in both a sprint and a marathon," said Jeff Blake, head of distribution and marketing for Sony, told The Associated Press. "We're breaking records very quickly, but we also seem to be running a long way, as well."

Spider-Man became the fastest movie to hit $250 million, reaching the mark in 15 days on Friday. The previous record-holder was Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which reached the mark in 19 days.

Spider-Man is now projected to top the $400 million mark.

JERRY CANTRELL: I Will Someday Collaborate With Other ALICE IN CHAINS Members - May 20, 2002

Former ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell spoke to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer last week about how the death of AIC frontman Layne Staley has affected him on the eve of the release of his sophomore solo effort, Degradation Trip, which is due through Roadrunner Records on June 18th.

"I think getting right back on the horse is the best thing I can do right now," Cantrell said in a phone interview from Big Bear Lake in California's San Bernardino Mountains, where he was hanging out and commiserating with ALICE IN CHAINS bassist Mike Inez.

"The shows I played between the time I got the word about Layne and Layne's funeral were very important to me in terms of being able to continue on. It's one of those things where if you take a break and allow things to settle in, it might be harder to get up again.

"If anything can be learned from losing somebody, it's that you become really appreciative of what you have left and who you have left. And you make sure that you keep those relationships intact and healthy."

Cantrell also spoke of the possibility of someday collaborating with his two surviving bandmates.

"It's probably going to happen. In fact, I'm sure it will," he said. "And I'm sure if Layne were still around, we would have gotten together someday. He was one of my favorite guys to play with."

    Michael Jackson is Wolfed
    Monday, May 20, 2002 12:13 CDT

Reporting from the Cannes Film festival, Screen Daily has learned that in the first movie being made under his Neverland Pictures banner, Michael Jackson will play a werewolf in a project he will also produce called "Wolfed". Rick Baker, Oscar-winning makeup expert who created the werewolf effects for "An American Werewolf In London" and Jackson's music video "Thriller," is already on board says the site which describes the project as...

The film will be a Gothic thriller faithfully adapted from the little-known Alexandre Dumas novel The Wolf Leader. It tells the story of Thibault, the son of a shoemaker in 17th Century France, who is nearly beaten to death by a group of aristocrats and is saved only by making a pact with the devil which appears as a large black wolf. The devil offers Thibault the power to harm or kill anyone he wishes, but the more evil acts he commits, the more he starts turning into a wolf and becoming one of a pack of killer wolves.

Spider-Man has survived the Attack of the Clones and still managed to break a new box office record in the process according to Brandon Gray of Box Office Mojo.

While the blockbuster second chapter of the Star Wars saga was #1, the #2 Spider-Man still enjoyed a $46 million take in the third weekend of its run. The figure marks the biggest third weekend for a film ever. Spidey topples the juggernaut Titanic, which pulled in $33,315,278 on a holiday weekend.

Spider-Man has scrambled up to #14 on the all-time charts with a domestic total of $286,537,000. This moves the superhero flick past Men in Black ($250,690,539) and makes it the most successful comic book adaptation of all-time. It also makes it Sony's most successful film to date.

As previously reported the web-slinger is easily on track to hit the $300 million mark faster than any other movie.

    From www.aintitcoolnews.com

    Harry,

Good news first. Aliens vs. Predator is alive again.

Bad News (Really Bad News): Apparently Paul Anderson is now the #1 contender to get the project, based on the strength of the pitch he gave.

To me this is a terrible way to go. The guy screwed up "Soldier" (which could have been great), "Resident Evil" (A zombie movie with no balls, and certainly no bite) and "Event Horizon" (don't even get me started). I'll admit that I loved "Mortal Kombat" when I saw it, but it was a combination of being a rabid fan of the game, and having never been exposed to martial arts with some VFX razzle dazzle. Now, about 9 years later, I can barely watch it.

Is this person worthy to bring one of Sci-Fi fandom's most wettest of dreams to the screen?

Personally, I don't think he's worthy. But apparently FOX & Davis Entertainment think that because he made "Resident Evil" look twice as expensive as it cost, perhaps he's the one. I've always went into Paul Anderson's movies WANTING TO LOVE THEM. But he never delivers. Find someone who really LOVES anyone of his movies. Shit, find someone who LIKES more than one of them. Good luck.

I hope the studios see that this guy has a clear history of screwing up prime material, and go with someone who can deliver the goodness we all have been dreaming of.
