End of Era as Britain's Queen Mother Dies at 101
Sat Mar 30, 6:19 PM ET
By Lyndsay Griffiths

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's Queen Mother, who witnessed abdication, world war and family breakup in a century of royal tumult, died on Saturday aged 101 with her devoted daughter Queen Elizabeth at her bedside.

Symbol of a bygone era and bridge to Britain's victorious wartime past, the "Queen Mum" died in her sleep at 3:15 p.m. (10:15 a.m. EST), robbing Britain of its favorite royal.

The peaceful end to a life that began when horses plied the streets came on Easter Saturday, as her younger relatives played on the beaches of Barbados and ski slopes of Switzerland.

"She believed that the royal family's role and duty was to serve the British nation and she carried out that duty with total and selfless devotion," said Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites).

"Her bravery...during the Blitz epitomized both her own indomitable spirit and the spirit of the nation in its darkest hours."

Widow of King George VI and staunchest of allies to the 75-year-old queen, the Queen Mother was considered the glue behind two thrones in a period of massive upheaval.

Her death comes weeks after that of her younger daughter, 71-year-old Princess Margaret, and as her first born struggles to ignite enthusiasm for celebrations marking 50 years on the throne.

True to form, there was no final crisis -- just a quiet end to a woman of steel with a world-famous smile.

"The Queen Mother had become increasingly frail in recent weeks, following a bad cough and chest infection over Christmas," said a palace spokesman. "Her condition deteriorated this morning and her doctors were called."

He said the Queen Mother's coffin would be moved to the Royal Chapel of All Saints in Windsor Great Park on Sunday. The funeral will take place on April 8 at Windsor.

Flags flew at half mast at Buckingham Palace, where a trickle of tourists read the solemn news on a simple notice pinned to the gates. "We came here to watch history in the making," said Tolo Alberti from Spain. "She was a symbol."

ROYAL WEAPON

Her grandchildren were said to be distraught, yet it is older Britons who will most keenly feel the loss of this tiny figure, branded Europe's most dangerous woman by Adolf Hitler for her morale-boosting role in World War Two.

When she defied German bombers and stayed in London during the Blitz, a once remote royal family was shown to have a common touch which helped her retain a devoted following to the end.

"We have really lost our most treasured national human being. The Queen Mother was not only a historical figure, she was history," said Lord St. John of Fawsley, a close friend.

Other royals fell in and out of favor -- the Queen Mother was not amused by the highly public marital breakdowns of her grandchildren -- but the crowds never stopped turning up for the many birthday celebrations at her London residence.

Known for a love of gin and race horses, the Queen Mother will be best remembered for playing key support roles over decades of fast-changing royal life: 16 years as George VI's queen consort and half a century as matriarch when their daughter Elizabeth succeeded him.

For behind the pastel wardrobe and sugary smile, "the nation's favorite grandmother" hid a steely interior, never forgiving the king who forced her shy husband on to the throne.

She also maintained a vendetta against American divorcee Wallis Simpson, for whom King Edward VIII gave up the crown in the 1936 Abdication Crisis.

DECENCY AND COURAGE

The Queen Mother's favorite grandchild, heir to the throne Prince Charles, was said to be deeply saddened by her death.

"He is absolutely devastated," said Clair Southwell, part of Charles's entourage in the Swiss ski resort of Klosters.

Charles and his two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were returning home from Switzerland on Sunday.

Charles's younger brother Prince Andrew was also flying home from a family holiday in the Caribbean for a week of mourning.

A mainstay of a more regal royalty through all the scandal, divorce and adultery of younger royals, the Queen Mother was perennially the most popular member of "the firm."

A fun-loving Scottish aristocrat who married in 1923, she injected a spontaneous style into a formal institution which had taken most of its consorts from European royal families.

After her self-effacing husband unexpectedly ascended the throne, she worked tirelessly to uphold the popularity of the royal family as the old order and class barriers crumbled. Many believe the king might not have managed without her.

Her daughter now embarks on a fresh period of mourning, just weeks after her sister died and at a time when she is preparing for celebrations to mark her 50 years on the British throne

Yeah... I already heard about that earlier today.

I'm not exactly a fan of the Windsors (as I'm no fan of any aristocratic) but the Queenmum has always stood out of that fucked up British Royal family.

Ah well... 101 is a good age. She's had her fair share of life, that's for sure.

I'm just happy that the Queen Mum lived such a long life.

I'm starting to think we may have to start a new forum for all these passings lately.

It's a pity about the queen mum (mom)...she was the only one left who wasn't so caught up in the 'royal' bullshit that she forgot about the people!
I think she's the only one left who actually EARNT her money.
