Anybody ever have any luck with these damn things? I've downloaded MAME and retrocade and can't get the damn things to work.

Retrocade just pops up a DOS box for a few seconds when I run the executable, and the screen goes black for a sec and then it all disappears.

Sucks, because I can find just about every game I used to throw my quarters away on.

Look for MAME Win32 Version. It's actually called MAME32. I have Indiana Jones and Zaxxon and tons of other shit. Fuck these guys They blew quarters just like the rest of us with Panama blaring out the radio at the arcade

Sorry for this, but I have to start my suggestions by insulting your intelligence just to make sure I cover all the bases. No offense intended:

First, do you have any ROMs? The emulator itself only runs them, it doesn't actually contain any of the games in it

[end insult to intelligence]

I've always used MAME32 because it comes with a nice point and click GUI like Windows. For a hardcore emulation scene member, the tradeoff is that MAME32 is done by a different crew and isn't updated as quickly as the DOS MAME. Word of warning - MAME is all about getting games running, not getting them perfectly emulated. Some games, especially the newer ones, may run slowly on your system or might have graphical or sound glitches.

As for Retrocade, I've never used it, but maybe it's a command line DOS program where you need to type in the executable file and the ROM you want to run on the same line? Look in the readme (if there is one) to see about commands for running it.

LOL! No worries , SNM - nobody could insult my intelligence like....tripoutski .

j/k - trip was a huge help to me trying to get it running. I originally had the command line DOS version of MAME, which trip helped me figure out. Then I saw el jalapeno's post and got the windows 32-bit version, and it ROCKS as far as I'm concerned.

My GOD, do I ever have roms!
Not too worried about any of these being perfect - it's just a blast being able to play all these things that I threw away so much money on growing up, and......for free. :whataconcept:

The Retrocade is indeed just dos at this point. Get this - I printed out the docs that came with the file, and right there at the top is "installation for Windows". I figure, "cool", and do everything that it says. Then I read down like, ten pages or some shit, and it says that a Windows version is not out yet. Fuckers. Get your editing skills in order and place that shit at the beginning of the doc.

Anyhoo, a lot of the rom sites have shut down their downloads, but I do have a list of sites that are functional for anybody that is interested. they are all there...Defender, Joust, battlezone, blah blah blah.

Thanks to trip for all his help, el jalapeno for pointing me towards the right version, and Stuff for insulting me. (j/k bro)

Glad to help Let me know when you find some cool links. There are also Nintendo, and Super Nintendo game emulators out there. I haven't looked for N64, but it just may be there. But it really is about the arcade games... Ahh the memories...

Here's a good link for roms, my hot pepper bro.

Not all of the links on the page work, but I managed to find a few of the sites that had a TON of roms. Happy hunting!

I was mainly happy when they managed to emulate Capcom Mode 2 games (games released later than about 1992). I've been wanting to play the English version of the D&D arcade games but none of the arcades around here have them anymore, and though my Japanese import of them for the Sega Saturn is fun, it's just not as satisfying not being able to read anything

But all the "new classics" - Simpsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, X-Men, D&D games, Cadash - are there, along with the old classics everyone knows and loves.
