So how are the new systems? This is BY NO MEANS trying to start any console vs console discussion, I'm genuinely curious.

First impressions? Strengths? Weaknesses? Games that stand-out? Games that disappointed?

I want to get the Gamecube because a lot of good games are going to be on it.

I bought the Gamecube Sunday for my wife. She has been playing Luigi's mansion. The game appears to be nice graphically, but it is very cartoonish compared to some of the games I have for my PS2. Until she gets a few more games it is hard to tell that much difference graphically. I've heard the xbox has some very nice graphics especially with a game called Halo. I hope all three consoles do well. I also intend on getting an xbox.
Currently I have been playing Grand theft Auto 3 for the PS2. It is awesome with tons of replay value. You can go anywhere, steal any car, and blow up anyone, and even pick up prostitutes to increase your health. Sounds bad I know, but it is really fun being a thug. Metal Gear Solid 2 on the otherhand is a let down.

Anyone else playing any good games?

Limecuda, you're not the first to say that MGS2 was a disappointment. I haven't played it yet, so what was it that caused this opinion?

Video stores here rent pretty well any gaming system. From what my son tells me, his friends aren't impressed by xbox, and ps2 still seems to be the way to go.

Graphics are better but the story sucks. You start as Snake and play for awhile then the game changes and you control this gayass guy named Raiden. In my opinion the game of all games at the moment is Grand Theft Auto 3. Damn awesome game.

Haven't seen SNM for a couple of days. No doubt he's out in the wild, inseminating young ladies. Dirty boy.

Ahhh yeh, I remember my days as a young stud. Frolicking freely. The gentle slap of grass upon my bolloc....

uh.... Dunno man. Haven't seen SNM for a couple of days.

Um, no, nothing that exotic Eating lots of turkey, playing lots of GameCube.

My impressions on the system:

First, I should mention the controller is excellent. If you were scared by the freaky N64 controller and dismayed by the clunky Dreamcast controller, this is a massive step forward towards ergonomic improvements. The only gripes I could make are that the D pad is a bit small (the same size as the Game Boy Advance pad) and the Z button is a tad close to the R shoulder button. Looking over my games, though, none of them make use of the D pad, and the ones that use Z do so half-heartedly.

Booting the system up you notice there is practically zero load time. Luigi's Mansion goes straight from the Gamecube logo to the Nintendo logo. Super Monkey Ball has a short "now loading" at the beginning. NHL Hitz disguises their loads with the NHL liscensing screen. The rest of the time you never pause for loading.

Luigi's Mansion is a short, fun game. The textures in the game seem to be ported straight from the N64, but the realtime lighting and cloth physics more than make up for it. It's a nice little game that displays what the Cube can do when it starts crunching those polygons. Other than the texture issue, the only real drag to the game graphically is how jerky Luigi's walk movement is. The game is very linear though, and has about the standard replay value of an old Mario game.

Super Monkey Ball... Sega + Monkies = Fun! This is one of those offbeat games that doesn't really fit into a category. What you have is one of four monkies in a translucent ball. You move the floor around, changing the tilt of it, in order to get the monkey to the goal. As you play you rack up points that can be cashed in to unlock three mini games - Monkey Billiards, Monkey Bowling, and Monkey Golf. My 18 month old niece gives this game two thumbs up "Mummy... ooo oo oo oo!"

Fans of NFL Blitz would enjoy NHL Hitz - I'm not even a huge hockey fan and it's a blast. This is one out for EVERY system, though, which means there isn't much of a difference between them all. The ice is about the most impressive graphical representation (well, that and the lighting effects from being on fire).

I've got Star Wars: Rogue Leader on my wish list along with Super Smash Brothers Melee. Both are top winners and will probably sell like wildfire this Christmas.

I suppose my bottom line is, technologically, the Gamecube is more than a match for what's out there. From a pure technology standpoint, the only reason to buy a PS2 or XBox is if you need a DVD player (and all signs point to the XBox player being better than the PS2 one).

Definitely a good time to be a gamer. Can't wait for Zelda, Mario Sunshine, Metroid Prime, and the inevitable Sonic Adventure 3. Now if someone could just make Yuji Naka develop and release a NiGHTS 2 all would be right in the world again.
