    Chabon Rewriting The Amazing Spider-Man!
    Friday, September 20, 2002 1:34 CDT

Variety reports that Pulitzer Prize-winning author Michael Chabon will rewrite The Amazing Spider-Man, the sequel which is set to begin shooting early next year and is scheduled for release May 7, 2004.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, creators of Disney's Shanghai Noon franchise, were originally inked to pen the sequel. David Koepp, who received sole screenplay credit for the first picture, also wrote a draft.

Chabon's Pulitzer-winning "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay," which he adapted for producer Scott Rudin, is the story of an immigrant Jewish artist who partners with his Brooklyn cousin and creates comic books by drawing on their own fears and dreams to invent villains and superheroes.

Chabon also was approached by 20th Century Fox in 1996 when the studio was still seeking a writer to crack X-Men. Although the author wrote an impassioned letter to the studio outlining his take on the story (see here), he ultimately wasn't selected for that project.

    Nicole Kidman is Possibly Bewitched
    Friday, September 20, 2002 1:18 CDT

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nicole Kidman is in talks to star in Columbia Pictures' comedy Bewitched, a feature film adaptation based on the long-running television series of the same name.

Kidman is said to have expressed interest in the starring role of pretty witch Samantha, who earnestly tries to abandon her powers for the sake of her mortal husband, Darren, but temptation constantly gets in the way.

The trade adds that Mike Myers is the top choice to play Darren. The project has no director on board and is out to writers to begin a new draft, starting from scratch.

The Outer Limits Gets a Rewrite
    Friday, September 20, 2002 12:57 CDT

MGM has tapped Double Jeopardy and The Rock scribes Douglas Cook and David Weisberg to rewrite the film adaptation of the sci-fi anthology series The Outer Limits.

According to Variety, the project is a high priority for the studio, which hopes to put the big screen version of the 1960s TV series into production as quickly as it can, with Rupert Wainwright ("Stigmata") at the helm.

The studio is looking to turn "Outer Limits" into a feature franchise. Since the '60s, the series has made a return to television on cablers Showtime and the Sci Fi Channel.

NEWS - U2's Bono Talks About African AIDS, Poverty Crises On 'Oprah'
    09/19/2002

(9/19/02, 6 p.m. ET) -- Bono's appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, which was taped Wednesday (September 18), is scheduled for broadcast Friday (September 20). The frontman of U2 didn't perform or flog the Irish band's upcoming best-of CD and DVD--he was on the show to talk about various causes he's been supporting, including reducing Third World debt and battling the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

"If you want to talk to the American people, you come to Oprah," Bono told the audience at an afternoon taping of the program, which is viewed by more than 20 million people weekly.

Wearing a black suit, dark gray dress shirt, and a short haircut, Bono looked like a businessman, apart from his ever-present tinted glasses and sliver hoop earrings. And he was all business about his cause.

"This is an emergency," he said. ""We can throw pennies at the problem, but God doesn't want alms, God wants action."

Bono said that because of crushing debt owed to nations in the developed world, most emerging African nations cannot provide the most basic of human necessities, including clean water, education, and medicine. He also compared the AIDS crisis to the Holocaust of World War II, urging that the rest of the world not to stand by and simply watch the death toll in Africa increase. "We're watching people being put on the trains," he told the Oprah audience.

Regarding pressuring politicians in Washington, Bono told the talk-show host he'd been a "real pain in the arse," though his relentless lobbying convinced President Bush earlier this year to set aside an additional $5 billion in aid for Africa. However, Congress has yet to approve the funds, and he asked that Americans support the campaign and contact their local representatives.

Also appearing on the program was U.S. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill and comedian Chris Tucker, who both traveled with the U2 singer on a trip to Africa in May of this year. Bono also directed audience to the website datadata.org for more information.

AUDIOSLAVE Finalize Track Listing For Self-Titled Debut - Sep. 20, 2002

AUDIOSLAVE, the new group featuring ex-SOUNDGARDEN frontman Chris Cornell and former RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE members Tim Commerford (bass), Brad Wilk (drums), and Tom Morello (guitar), have set the track listing to their forthcoming self-titled debut album, due on November 19th through Epic Records. It is as follows:

    01. Cochise
    02. Show Me How To Live
    03. Gasoline
    04. What You Are
    05. Like A Stone
    06. Set It Off
    07. Shadow Of The Sun
    08. I Am The Highway
    09. Exploder
    10. Hypnotize
    11. Bring 'Em Back Alive
    12. Light My Way
    13. Getaway Car
    14. The Last Remaining Light

Morello recently explained the inspiration behind the album's first single, "Cochise": "Cochise was the last great American Indian chief to die free and absolutely unconquered," the guitarist said in a prepared statement. "When several members of his family were captured, tortured, and hung by the U.S. Cavalry, Cochise declared war on the entire Southwest and went on an unholy rampage, a warpath to end all warpaths. He and his warriors drove out thousands of settlers. Cochise the Avenger, fearless and resolute, attacked everything in his path with an unbridled fury. This song kinda sounds like that."

As previously reported, AUDIOSLAVE will shoot a video for "Cochise" in Los Angeles at the end of September with Mark Romanek, the director behind NINE INCH NAILS' "Closer" and MICHAEL and JANET JACKSON's "Scream".

Not only is Pink contributing a song to the sequel of "Charlie's Angels," but she also just shot a cameo role for the flick.

The singer filmed her part in the movie on Wednesday in San Pedro, California, according to a spokesperson for Columbia Pictures. Pink pops up during a motocross scene, which is fitting, considering her boyfriend is motocross daredevil Carey Hart. The motocross sequence could be a key plot point, as one of the people the Angels are reportedly called in to protect is a 15-year-old motocross champion.

Pink isn't the only star to boast a cameo in the sequel to the 2000 hit movie (which itself was based on the hit 1970s TV show). Though none of the original TV Angels turned up in the first movie, this time around, Jaclyn Smith is making a cameo appearance, as are non-Angels Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu reprise their previous Angel roles, though they have a new Bosley in Bernie Mac. The film will also feature Robert Patrick, Crispin Glover, Luke Wilson, Matt LeBlanc, and Demi Moore as a former Angel gone bad.

As for Pink's song, it's slated as the first single for the soundtrack. Word was that it would also be the film's title song, causing conjecture that it would be called "Halo." Reps at Columbia Pictures, however, say that "Charlie's Angels 2: Halo" was only a working title and has since been discarded.

Shooting for the sequel started on July 31, with a release date scheduled for June 27, 2003.

Actor Josh Lucas discusses vision and look of THE HULK
HULK’s Major Glenn Talbot says Hulk will be like nothing fans have ever seen before

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Friday, September 20, 2002

    By: JENNIFER H. TOMOOKA
    By: News Editor

While fans of comics favorite green hero, THE HULK, will still have to wait until next year to see the latest adaptation in the comic franchise, Josh Lucas (AMERICAN PSYCHO, A BEAUTIFUL MIND)shares part of Director Ang Lee’s vision for the film, which was to explore “the Hulk in all of us.”

“[Ang] keeps talking about that, and his thing was, ‘[Talbot] is the freest with it, the one who has no repression whatsoever.' Whereas Bruce Banner's character is the most repressed and most terrified of what's happening to him. So, when he has those emotions [streaming] through his blood, he loses control to the point of actually transforming. Ang really wanted to understand it, not only psychologically, but [also] physiologically.

In his sequences, Lucas states that he has been working completely alone, but will reveal that the onscreen Hulk is like nothing fans have ever seen before.

“[Hulk is] a completely computer generated image that they're using Eric to generate,” discloses Lucas. “[They are also using] body builders, dancers and so many different elements. You have Eric's face with the movement of another man's face with the movement of a gorilla. The way that they're constructing the being is fascinating and futuristic.”

While there may be advancements on the movement of THE HULK, Lucas assures fans one thing will not change. Hulk’s trademark green form.

“He's very green,” says Lucas. “Everything is green. If anything, it's going back to the comic book [origins]. The comic book is a very dark, psychological story. It's still going to have the twenty, thirty-minute action sequences but it's going to be a slow ride to get there.”

Some interesting bits of news came out of Moviehole's interview with Steve Guttenberg. Firstly, the actor is looking at a return to the "Police Academy" movies - also adding fuel to the fire of that old time rumour of a "Mahoney" flick. “There have been rumours of a Mahoney spin-off film for quite a while. I sure hope they do it. If the script’s right – I’m definitely in.”, Says Guttenberg. “You knew know, I may direct”. Guttenberg also says a new “Police Academy” film is almost certainly on the cards. “Definitely. It’s coming. I mean we have to. When it all comes down to it people will look down at the idea, but they’re in the same business of making money too. And that’s what doing another one would all be about. I mean Godfather II and III were all about the money too they were sequels. The Police Academy films gave me so much opportunity, and I’ve got nothing but a good attitude towards them, I’ll probably make it”. Guttenberg also say's to expect a "Three Men and a Baby 3" in the next couple of years.

Don Coscarelli, director of the Phantasm horror-film series, told SCI FI Wire that a fifth installment in the saga of The Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) isn't beyond the realm of possibility. "There's a resurgence of interest, so that's good," Coscarelli said in an interview. "Roger Avary, a friend of mine and a big Phantasm fan, had taken it upon himself after he won an Oscar for Pulp Fiction to write this epic Phantasm sequel."

Pearl Jam will play its first show of the year Monday (Sept. 23), opening for the Who at Chicago's House of Blues. As previously reported, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder was originally announced to open the show with his occasional backing band C-Average. The event will raise funds for Maryville Academy, which aids disadvantaged youth in and around Illinois. Vedder and C-Average opened a similar benefit for the Who at the same venue in November 1999.

In an unusual twist, Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard is not expected to appear at the show due to a prior commitment with the environmental organization Conservation International. Instead, the band will be joined by Boom, a friend of Vedder's who plays keyboards on the majority of Pearl Jam's upcoming Epic album "Riot Act." The altered lineup should prove especially interesting on "Riot Act" material, the bulk of which has yet to be performed live.

"I think Boom's going to be there because Stone can't," Vedder tells Billboard.com. "We'll have Boom fill in for him on his side of the stage, and we'll just kind of wing it. I brought my ukulele so I might do a version of [new album opener] 'Can't Keep' or something."

For the Who, the event comes three shows prior to the Sept. 28 close of its North American tour, which pressed on despite the June 28 death of founding bassist John Entwistle. As previously reported, the Who is offering soundboard-sourced live recordings of shows from the trek via guitarist Pete Townshend's Eelpie.com site and new community/comerce site TheMusic.com.

Veteran progressive rock outfit Yes will kick off a brief second North American touring leg Oct. 24 in Clearwater, Fla. The 11-date trek is concentrated on the eastern half of the country, wrapping with a pair of Nov. 8-9 shows just outside of Philadelphia at the Tower Theatre in Upper Darby, Pa.

As on its summer tour, the band's ever evolving lineup remains as what's described as the "classic five-piece" version of Yes: vocalist Jon Anderson, bassist Chris Squire, guitarist Steve Howe, drummer Alan White, and keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who recently returned to the fold.

"Touring with Rick [Wakeman] again has been a lot of fun for us," Squire said in a statement. "The band is playing better than ever, and the fans have really been responding well to the shows. We are really looking forward to the next leg of this tour, as we feel we're just getting started."

At deadline, the band's official YesWorld.com Web site had pre-sale ticket information for most of the dates on the tour. Several of the shows will go on sale to the public this weekend, while others will be up for grabs in a week or so. In addition, WindowsMedia.com will also supply pre-sale information, as well as rare Yes audio and video.

The band is touring in support of the recently released five-disc Rhino set "In a Word: Yes (1969- )," a 55-track retrospective spanning more than three decades of music. The group also recently released "Yessymphonic Live," a home video of an Amsterdam concert from a 2001 tour. Yes is accompanied by a full symphony orchestra as it performs such classics as "Close to the Edge," "Roundabout," and "I've Seen All Good People."

Here are Yes' upcoming tour dates:

Oct. 24: Clearwater, Fla. (Ruth Eckerd Hall)
    Oct. 25: Atlanta (Chastain Park)
Oct. 27: South Bend, Ind. (Morris Performing Arts Center)
Oct. 28: Columbus, Ohio (Schottenstein Center)
Oct. 30: Fort Wayne, Ind. (Embassy Center)
Oct. 31: University Park, Pa. (Bryce Jordan Center)
Nov. 2: Wallingford, Conn. (Oakdale Theatre)
Nov. 4: Albany, N.Y. (Pepsi Arena)
Nov. 5: Rochester, N.Y. (Blue Cross Arena)
Nov. 8-9: Upper Darby, Pa. (Tower Theatre)

Tedd Tally Talks Alexander the Great
    Friday, September 20, 2002 7:54 CDT

TV Guide talked to screenwriter Ted Tally (Red Dragon) about his upcoming Alexander the Great adaptation, to be directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. According to the scribe, the movie will take full advantage of the young conqueror's sexually adventurous side.

"[Alexander]'ll be bisexual," the Oscar-winning Silence of the Lambs scribe tells TV Guide Online of the Macedonian emperor, who ruled from 336 B.C. to his death at age 32 in 323 B.C. "He seems to have been kind of omnisexual as a person.

"There's a story about him that I love," Tally recounts, "where he was campaigning in Asia, and a royal courtier from Macedonia reached him and said, 'Your sister is having an affair.' And he said, 'I don't see why she shouldn't have a little fun just because she's the princess.' The biographer says, 'Coming from a man who had three wives, at least four known mistresses, a lifelong male lover, and also is believed to have slept with a eunuch and an Amazon, this is open-mindedness at its best.'"

He says that the competing Oliver Stone project, in which Colin Farrell is to portray Alexander, will most likely give up soon. The reason? Producer Dino De Laurentiis already has the army in place needed for the Luhrmann pic, and that's one of the most important things.

Yes, Johnny Carson has emphysema. Yes, he is still keeping a low profile. But no, he is not on his deathbed, thank you very much.

That's the word today from the late-night talkmeister's camp as it tries to snuff an upcoming tabloid story claiming Carson is seriously ailing.

The National Enquirer will report in its next issue that Carson has "been grappling with killer emphysema for several years and wants to stay out of the public eye." Although the tab doesn't hit supermarket shelves until Friday, the gist of the story was leaked in Thursday's New York Post. a d v e r t i s e m e n t

The report prompted a rare response from Carson himself, via his Carson Productions spokesman Jeff Sortzing.

"I'm dealing with it the best I can and it is not causing me any major problems," Carson said.

In the brief statement, Carson says he first learned of the story after a 45-minute stint of tennis at his Malibu cliff-side enclave.

Carson, who turns 77 in October, was frequently caught puffing away during his 1962-92 tenure manning the desk on NBC's Tonight Show, but he claims to have given up his cigarette habit. Smoking is the leading cause of emphysema, an incurable degenerative lung disease that causes shortness of breath. Exercise and medication are among the treatments used to keep the condition in check.

The iconic funnyman has remained way off the show-biz radar since his retirement, rarely turning up in public and even refusing to attend NBC's 75th anniversary special earlier this year.

Carson's reclusion has led to much speculation about his health, especially since he underwent quadruple-bypass heart surgery in 1999 following a reported heart attack.

But according to an Esquire magazine profile earlier this year, Carson's doing just fine. He and fourth wife Alexis spend most of their time ensconced in their Malibu digs or cruising the world in their custom-crafted 130-foot yacht, the Serengeti. (The vessel's name reflects Carson's love of Africa. He visits Tanzania so often he's even learned to speak some Swahili.)

He also reportedly finds time for the occasional poker game with fellow funnymen Carl Reiner, Steve Martin and Chevy Chase and media mogul Barry Diller.
