I know there's a few of you who were fans of this classic comic-strip, now there's a rumor floating around that there's an animated-movie in the works!

Watterson's parents live not too far from where i do...they frequent a little bookstore in town, and every now and then they drop off some signed copies of Calvin and Hobbes books. not very often, i've never seen one in the store, but they do confirm that they get them. Watterson is rumored to live in the area also, but no one knows if it's true or not.

I don't really blame Watterson for "retiring" the strip when he did. He didn't want his creation watered-down by mass-merchandising it (though it's heavily bootlegged!). I was a huge fan of the strip and often wondered if he didn't retire in part due to having writer's block. (He took about 3 extended leaves of absence during his run on the strip due to that reason.)

This is very cool.
the daily comics have sucked ever since Calvin and Hobbes, Farside and the Bloom County ended.

I admired Watterson's principles, and I hate peeing Calvins on cars, but I'm disappointed that there was NO merchandising to come from his strip - I wish he could have allowed a limited line of items so that huge fans could have something other than a few books to cherish and remind them of what IMO was the best comic strip ever. Ever. period.
I also wish that it could have had the kind of run that Peanuts had, or at the very least, Garfield.

And I agreed with Murdock - I miss the Far Side and Bloom County as well.

My favorites these days (if you can call them that) are "Zits" and "Jump Start".

Anyone remember the Transmogrifier (sp?) gun storyline, where they changed eachother into different animals each time? That went on for a while, and I thought it was the funniest thing. I used to look forward to the comics JUST to see that storyline. I've never felt that about comics since.

I have a couple of the books, but that's about it. It would be cool to see a movie, I just hope they don't butcher it! It should be animated too. I hate when they take cartoons, and make it live action. Comic books are ok, but I just can't stand cartoons and comic strips going that route.

Wow.. this is AWESOME news if it's true... one thing I remember Watterson stating was that he didn't like putting voices to characters b/c everyone had their own voice for the character and when you hear something else, it loses some of the magic...

Anyway, will be following this...

Zits is pretty good; I also like Get Fuzzy, Fusco Bros, and Boondocks (even though it's liberal, it's funny & thought-provoking, took me awhile to get used to the Japanese-style animation.

I still have my Opus 'n' Bill (Bloom County) screen saver--including the banned sendup of the flying toasters.

I also got a C & H "headed for trouble at Mardi Gras"--it's a boot? I'll have to doublecheck for fine print--if not, it's a boot!

I'm not sure about a movie being a good idea, either; Spiff's dead-on right about the voices.

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but there is a movie in the works based on Berke Breathed's "Bloom County's" Opus. No word on whether the other characters will be in it.
There was a cartoon FarSide on television a few years back that was actually pretty good.
