I never knew what a grit was until I moved to the South. They're not half bad if you add cheese and butter to them.

I thought they were nasty too until I had some loaded with butter and cheddar cheese. They come from corn. I grew up on Cream of Wheat and Oatmeal but I'm telling you, Grits aren't half bad. You just have to doctor them up a little. You can add crumbled bacon to 'em too. Damn, I've lived in the south too long.

I love grits with tons of sugar (people of the South grimace in disgust).

    Good chow.

There's only 3 kinds of grits that I know of:

    1)Sandpaper grits.

    2)Flo's grits that Mel kisses.

3)The 'magic grits' from My Cousin Vinny.

For the uninformed or the unenlightened, here is what grits are:

They are a hot cereal, similar to Cream of Wheat or oatmeal. They come from corn, and are basically the very tip of the pointed end of a kernal of corn. These 'tips' are cooked into a hot cereal. If you've ever eaten corn on the cob or whole kernal corn out of a can, you've eaten 'grits' along with the rest of the corn. If you eat grits, as God and nature intended, you'll eat them with a little butter and salt and pepper. Cheese, bacon crumbs, red-eye gravy, and other similar items may be added if desired - but NO SUGAR!

If you've never had them and you like stuff like oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, or corn in general, you'll like grits.

My fellow Notherners, don't listen to the Southerners; sugar on grits is the best way to eat them - just like cream of wheat.

As a transplanted Southerner(originally from Illinois), what you say about sugar on grits is pure BLASPHEMY! Say it ain't so! I'll bet you even desecrate your breakfast by eating your biscuits with jam and jelly instead of the way they were intended to be eaten - with GRAVY! Good God man, do you have no culinary decency? I think grits are ground up hominy. Hominy is a type of white corn that has a bland and odd taste, in my opinion. The hominy "kernal" is much larger and rounder than a kernal of yellow corn. Check the canned vegetable section of your grocery store for hominy. You might also be able to find dried ground hominy in the section by the flour and sugar. Like oatmeal, grits can come in the fast-cooking variety (not what "any self-respecting Southerner" would eat, apparently). Regardless, I do love the scene in My Cousin Vinny where Joe Pesci is served a big plate of eggs and grits swimming in bacon grease and Marisa Tomei takes a snapshot of him eating a spoonful.
