Just got a new hard drive and need to put some anti-virus software on it. Anybody have experience with both Norton or McAfee or even a horror story from one of those? I've always used McAfee but since I have to shell out the $$$ this time, I have options. Thanks.

My professional opinion (and yes, smartasses, I do actually have a job):

6 in one hand and half a dozen in the other.

You are gonna get die-hards in both directions here, but if you are talking strictly anti-virus on a personal or corporate level, they are both very good. I have rolled them both out an all levels for many years.

Things to consider are price and other options/programs/utilities. I donít use much of the utilities that come with them (except enterprise management and such), so I have no preference.

    Oh wait, that's because he's a professional.

Personally, I like Norton, because, as trip said - it's all about the utilities once you get past the anitvirus program. Norton's Speed Disk kicks the crap out of regular defragmenting, because it places your most frequently run applications towards the front, which means your applications open faster. Their cleansweep utilities are great for clutter (you figure that one out ), and often you will find the Systemworks bundled with Norton Personal Firewall, which is a must if you run cable or DSL (I have caught Top Timmy trying to break into my pc on many, many occasions thanks to that nifty doodad. )

I used to have McAfee Office Pro, which did nothing but crash my system. Constantly. First Aid is the biggest crock of shit there is out there, and Guard Dog will flat out annoy the fuck out of you. Although I will say that Oil Change was a cool app to have.

Go with Norton. I found that McAfee was consistently a day or two behind Norton when it came to fixes for major viruses (like Nimda).

I think both of them are pretty good, but currently I'm running Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security (which includes the Personal Firewall) and I'm very happy with them.
