A Boogie Nights 2 in the Works?
    Saturday, January 19, 2002 10:36 CST

'Clint' sent us this bit about a possible "Boogie Nights 2". Would Mark Wahlberg, Julianne Moore and Heather Graham return?

Boogie Nights 2: Ah if only. As unlikely as it sounds, seems there's movement over at the P.T Anderson camp who are itching to do a sequel to 1998 hit "Boogie Nights". Our pals at Total Film magazine tell us that Anderson is looking at doing a follow-up movie, with Amber and Rollergirl being the central characters. Dirk Diggler isn't involved this time - so Mark Wahlberg need not worry. The story would focus on the rest of the ensemble from the first movie as they deal with the videotape '80s. Rollergirl (Heather Graham) becomes the world's biggest porn star, while Julianne Moore's Amber has problems conforming to the Devil's Decade. The trade says the original stars - most of them - might get involved again.

    Thanks to Moviehole.

Director Steven Spielberg has been talking to Entertainment Weekly about this summer's futuristic actioner "Minority Report," starring Tom Cruise.

Based on a Philip K. Dick short story, "Report" has Cruise playing a cop who can bust murderers before they kill, thanks to tips supplied by a team of seers. But when Cruise himself is accused, our hero goes on the run, trying to crack the crime he's supposed to commit.

"If I had to make a blend, I would say it's 'The Maltese Falcon' meets 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', with just a touch of madness," says Spielberg, adding that "Report's" 477 special-effects shots are his most since "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" 25 years ago.

Spielberg shot "Report" last summer, as his Stanley Kubrick homage "A.I." was befuddling audiences and critics. Does he feel any pressure to bounce back strong? Nope. "I feel like I've given my life over to pleasing audiences, and I feel like it's my time to start pleasing myself," he says. "I'm not motivated to make records fall. if that interested me, I would have said yes to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The lamppost knew that film was going to light the world on fire!"

NEWS - Nine Inch Nails Live Video And Album Born Of Fragility
    01/18/2002

(1/18/02, 5 p.m. ET) -- Nine Inch Nails is set to release its first live album and video collection, And All That Could Have Been Tuesday (January 22). The collection is being released in separate video (VHS and DVD) and CD packages. Despite sharing similar track lists, different performances are featured on the audio and the video releases. All the versions include "Terrible Lie," "Sin," "March Of The Pigs," "Piggy," "The Frail," "The Wretched," "Gave Up," "The Great Below," "The Mark Has Been Made," "Wish," "Suck," "Closer," "Head Like A Hole," "Starf--kers Inc," and "Hurt."

The CD has "The Day The World Went Away," which isn't featured on the DVD or the VHS. The DVD and VHS feature the non-CD tracks "La Mer," "Complication," and "Just Like You Imagined."

NIN mastermind Trent Reznor told LAUNCH about the video version of And All That Could Have Been. "A few weeks into the Fragility tour I started realizing that it had all come together quite nicely," he said. "I was proud of the band. I was proud of the set we were playing, and I was proud of the presentation in terms of the set design and lighting and involvement and the presentation of the music. And I thought it would be nice to have some representation or memento of this because a lot of times I feel that when a tour is over, it's gone. It's like words in the wind, it disappears."

Nine Inch Nails is also releasing a companion disc, Still, which will only be available on the CD deluxe-audio package or available for purchase via nin.com. The disc features new tunes and "deconstructed" versions of Nine Inch Nails classics. The track list for Still: "Something I Can Never Have," "Adrift And At Peace," "The Fragile," "The Becoming," "Gone, Still," "The Day The World Went Away," "And All That Could Have Been," "The Persistence Of Loss," and "Leaving Hope."

Reznor will be at New York City's Virgin Megastore in Times Square Tuesday to sign copies of the release. It will be Nine Inch Nails' first-ever in-store.

NEWS - Hank Williams Jr. Gets Back On The Album Chart After 10-Year Absence
    01/19/2002

(1/19/02, 10 a.m. ET) -- Hank Williams Jr.'s rowdy fans have spoken and stepped up to the cash registers in numbers large enough to make their "country boy" a hit with sales of Williams's Almeria Club, debuting the country legend at Number Nine this week on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart. This is his first top 10 album in a decade, and Williams's current ranking finds him in the company of Garth Brooks, Tim McGraw, and Martina McBride.

"Alan Jackson phoned me and we worked us up a trade...four of my albums for four of his…a real man-to-man handshake kind of deal that only country boys still understand," said Williams after learning the news of his successful album. "Hell, I'm glad he likes the new music. Yes, sir, life is good these days!"

JERRY CANTRELL To Issue "Degradation Trip" On May 14th - Jan. 19, 2002

ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell will issue his long-awaited sophomore solo effort through Roadrunner Records on May 14th, the guitarist told WMRQ Radio 104 in Hartford, Connecticut. When asked if the label's success with SLIPKNOT and NICKELBACK influenced his decision to sign with Roadrunner, Cantrell stated: "Sure it did. I think they're doing some exciting things and they've had some success, and as a smaller label that's important to me, number one, definitely. Another thing I like about them is just their enthusiasm and it seems that it's a family-type vibe."
As previously reported, the axeman's debut release for the label, Degradation Trip, will be a single-CD compilation of the strongest cuts from the Degradation Trip Vol. 1 and 2 sessions, which took place a year ago with the help of former FAITH NO MORE/KORN drummer Mike Bordin and OZZY/ex-SUICIDAL TENDENCIES bassist Robert Trujillo. 14 of the 25 songs the aforementioned band laid down as part of the original recording process will be featured on the album, with a two-CD version due to be released at a later point containing all the songs tracked during the same sessions. The tentative singles from Degradation Trip are "Angel Eyes" and "Anger Rising", both of which will be accompanied by video clips, to be lensed in the coming months. Degradation Trip will be Cantrell's first album since 1998's Boggy Depot.

Attack of the Clones Movie Update
    Sunday, January 20, 2002 10:47 CST

Both George Lucas and Hayden Christensen talked to L.A. Times about May's "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones". What's in store for Anakin this time around?

Lucas says of the first "Star Wars" prequel, "'Phantom Menace' was done really to determine that Anakin was a good person, good heart, nice kid. We're not talking here about an evil little monster child—we're talking about this great kid just like we all start out as, or [we] think we start out as."

In "Episode II," Lucas says, "the issue then becomes, what is it in Anakin's personality that makes him turn bad? What is his flaw? He has a couple. The groundwork is put forward in this movie much more clearly."

Hayden adds that "like Anakin, we all have to make choices, following instinct, reasoning and our heart. We're continually being presented with influences, sometimes very opposing ones, that motivate us and affect our decisions. Hopefully we choose wisely."

    Porn kings defeat Lucas’ STARs
Smut peddlers win right to parody STAR WARS

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Monday, January 21, 2002

    By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
    By: News Editor
    Source: AP

It looks like porn has struck back at George Lucas’ STAR WARS empire. As you may remember a few months back, Lucasfilm sued Media Market Group Ltd., a porn distributor which was about to release STARBALLZ. As you can image from the company that brought you the Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee video years ago, it’s not quite a sequel to SPACEBALLS.

The release of BALLZ was stymied when Lucasfilm won a restraining order in December, but that has now been overturned by a federal court.

“The STAR WARS films are so famous that is extremely unlikely that consumers would believe that STARBALLZ is associated with STAR WARS or Lucasfilm,” said Judge Claudia Wilken in her decision, according to an Associated Press report.

Representatives for Lucasfilm have not yet announced whether or not Lucasfilm lawyers will appeal the decision.

    Britney Pulls A Hissy Fit
Britney Spears has been practicing her diva ways since her arrival in the UK this week. The pop princess reportedly pulled a hissy fit and stormed out of the St. Martins Lane hotel in London yesterday where she was planning to stay after discovering that Pink had already booked a room there. Apparently, Britney was upset when she walked into the hotel and saw posters for Pink hanging in the lobby. Britney's recent episode may be connected to previous comments made by Pink, who's said she fancies Britney's boyfriend Justin Timberlake.

METALLICA: 20 New Songs In The Can - Jan. 18, 2002

METALLICA have completed the basic skeletons of 20 new songs during the most recent songwriting sessions for the group's next album, drummer Lars Ulrich revealed in an interview published in the latest issue of METALLICA fan magazine So What. Ulrich also stated that the much-talked-about collaboration between METALLICA, rapper JA RULE and producer Swizz Beatz—which apparently follows a BEASTIE BOYS-style direction, with full-on rapping mixed in with heavy guitars—is due to be issued in February. In other news, METALLICA frontman James Hetfield and wife Francesca are expecting their third child in late January/early February.

In REB BEACH news, his Masquerade album has sold well in Japan and he is on the verge of signing a new deal with Now & Then/Frontiers, who will distribute the album in Europe. Obtaining a US label is proving to be more difficult. Reb has begun writing for the next album and will be selling copies of Masquerade at www.rebbeach.com. In related news, WINGER's Best Of album is out now with a booklet packed with great info and pictures. For fans wondering why 'Battle Stations' was not included, Interscope Records would not release it to the band. Also, Kip has asked Reb to send him ideas for a new record, with plans to release a double CD, one prog and one pop. The pair will meet up soon in Santa Fe to begin working on music, aiming for a summer release. They may release the album under a different name.

Cameron Crowe's Vanilla Sky reaches our screens this week and the Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous writer/director has accompanied his film across the Atlantic to give it a proper send off. But Crowe has other reasons to land on our side of the pond, not least of these is his next project, the script for which is still a work in progress.

"I was working on it this morning actually," Crowe told Empire Online. "I've had some really major breakthroughs in London on various things that I've written. The problems with Jerry Maguire got solved when I came here to do an interview around the time of Singles and so it's kind of a lucky place to be."

Details on this latest Crowe creation are thin on the ground but it looks like a return to his earlier days rather than the somewhat surreal style of Vanilla Sky. "it's about half finished," he explains. "It's a little bit like the style of Jerry Maguire but it's an ensemble character comedy-drama. It's actually more like Say Anything.

With Vanilla Sky being the kind of film that happily bears repeated viewing, Crowe has already begun work on what is sure to be a huge DVD release. As well as a step-by-step guide to the myriad pop-culture references that are scattered throughout the film, Vanilla Sky fans will be treated to a number of special features.

"There'll be a few deleted scenes. There's a little bit more with Kurt Russell and there's a shoot-out, like in Open Your Eyes, there's a shoot-out that happens towards the end that we had to take out because it was just too long. It's funny, guys that have seen the movie like 30 times are still seeing new things in it and I'm honoured that the movie is that dense. It's an inviting movie that involves you, there's something new to check out every time you see it and that was the original intention. This is a movie built for DVD."
