Great guy, great career. I think it's good that he retired before things got even uglier.

I cant believe the guy faxed ESPN regarding this, before he told the Cardinals. T Larussa was on one of the local sports shows last night and had not heard anything from Mark. He was very suprised to hear this news.

I wish Mark the best, but he can be a bit strange at times.

You sure about that? Two weeks ago LaRussa reported that McGwire called him and said something about being "his former first baseman" or something along those lines. So LaRussa and everyone else knew he was gonna retire as far back as before the WS started. I think I might even have posted something on this board about that. It's a good thing he retired being that "Big Mac" couldn't even get the ball outta the infield this year and was hitting .090 at one point in time. He's a definite Hall of Famer though in 5 years.

I'm not too surprised by this. His health has been an issue for years now and he's been around for what feels like forever.

Anymore it seems like the only person that's still around from when I got interested in the sport is Barry Larkin.

Yes, real sure. He told Tony Larussa that he was leaning towards retirement, that he would let them know. The Cardinals were anxiously waiting for his decision so they knew which direction to go in the off season. Tony was LIVE last night and was actually questioning if the report/fax from ESPN was true or not.

If he did in fact announce his retirement in this manner, it would not surprise me one bit. The guy's turned into a grade-A prick when it comes to the media. MacGwire may be a nice guy in person and has been overly-generous to charities over the years, but he has to realize that media pressure comes with the territory and they won't go away. His horrible attitude has been a secret here in St. Louis ever since he moved to the Cards and this year the secret's finally starting to come out...

P.S. I'm still a big fan of his and I wish him the best in whatever he decides to do, though.

I'm surprized he didn't give it one more shot in spring training 2002. I suppose this opens the door for his buddy giambi to come to St. Louis.

Fuck the media, buncha vultures. If he's a prick, then he's no bigger of a prick than any reporter who tries to crawl up his ass to see what he had for lunch. Yeah, it comes with the territory (being famous), but some media individuals think their shit doesn't stink, and that they should have access to anything they want. I have little respect for reporters. Making their livelihood off of someone elses success, failures, tragedy, or prominence. Leeches. If "Big Mac" was a prick to the media, more than likely, they deserved that type of treatment.

I think Mark has probably made the right decision. It seems like he just cannot do it phsically anymore. Still, I wish he could have come back for one more season to try and hit 600 home runs, he's only 17 shy of that mark and that would have been great to see.

Yeah, it's too bad to see someone like him go - then again, that class - Ripken, Gwynn & McGwire - will be a good one going into the Hall of Fame, if there's still such a thing as baseball in five years...

I probably should have clarified it more. When I said "media", I didn't necessarily mean "papparazzi"-type reporters; I meant the broadcasting community in general. The "nicer", more high-profile guys from St. Louis TV and radio stations dread having to deal with MacGwire because it's rare that he acts anything other than "impossible". Even Hall Of Fame Cardinals play-by-play announcer Jack Buck refuses to even mention the existance of Big Mac unless it has to do specifically with a play in a game he's calling on at the moment...all because of the brush-offs, the rude comments, the dirty looks, etc., and Buck is tired of putting up with it.

For the record, I truly believe MacGwire has done a lot for baseball, has shown class, tact, and excellent sportsmanship with it comes to the game itself, and is a great role model for the young'uns. I also give him a thumbs up for not re-signing his contract just for the money (if that's the genuine reason). But I think the pressure of the media has gotten under Big Mac's skin and he's lashing out in the wrong way, that's all.

Well regardless of what the hell has gone on over in mo, I truely loved watching him play. I think he is, and will always be, a class act. He's pure baseball, and everything it IS meant to be. I'll never forget the way Big Mac and Sammy gave new life to baseball in 98. Best of luck Mark. Out.
