Ok, let me start off as many do, that I loathe Ben Affleck. He really sucks the life out of movies and I always wondered how he has made the jump to leading-man status, when he should be stuck acting on a soap-opera instead. (Maybe the casting-couch is still around in Hollywood?) Anyway, I was able to see an advance-screening of DD and being the huge fan of the Frank Miller-era of it, I pushed off my hatred of Affleck and decided to watch this movie with an open mind.
Just so I don't spoil anything plot-wise, I'll just give my $.02 for the movie. Let me start off with Ben Affleck: He's fine as long as he's not playing Matt Murdock. Whenever he's playing DD, it could be anybody (and it's most likely a stunt-double) in that costume. When he's playing Matt Murdock, he lets the "Affleck-factor" creep through on his scenes with Elektra Natchios, when she's not "Elektra". Otherwise, he's not too bad. Somebody must've coached him on whatever it is that irritates me in some of his other movies, much like somebody finally told George Clooney that he shakes his head too much on film-but that's another story altogether!
Jennifer Garner as Elektra: She's fine but not my first pick for Elektra. (I found myself casting the movie with other actors while I was watching it!) She's got the physical end of the part down pat, but she's got something of a butter-face (everything looks good but-her-face). I had to think back to how Frank Miller drew her and he did give Elektra a butter-face, so it all panned out. Michael Duncan Clarke (or is his last name vice-versa?) as The Kingpin: Outstanding! I was a little bit afraid that because they changed the race of this character, that they might feel inclined to make the character more "street" , but thankfully I was color-blinded and MDC played Wilson Fisk perfectly. I couldn't think of a better actor to play the role. (Let him cross-over and kick Spidey's ass) Colin Farrell as Bullseye: A little hammy, but not quite as hammy as Willem Defoe's Green Goblin. (Be sure to stick around after the ending credits for a little surprise) Joe P (I can't remember how to spell his last name, so forgive me.) as Ben Ulrich: Now this was a big miscast for me. I like Joe P. He was great as Guido the Killer Pimp, great in The Matrix, and great in The Sopranos, and several other flicks. He didn't play the Ben Ulrich that I read in the comics. But, this is the movie and many liberties will be taken. Not alot were taken in DD, though. The movie was more "The Crow" than "Spider-Man" for me. There was more realism to the action of DD than the over-cartoony CGI of Spider-Man. I liked the fighting sequences better in Spidey, because DD was a little too borderline Matrix in that department. The DD costume itself was fine as long as it was filmed in the darker scenes. The cowl was kinda goofy-looking since it didn't cover his neck, but the producers of the movie wanted their Ben Affleck to be recognized according to the director. The use of DD's radar was greatly used and many of the other special effects seemed fine.
Would I recommend seeing this movie? Yes, if you're a DD fan. I'm thinking this movie might be a tough-sell just because the world outside of comic-book readers might feel this is a lame premise for a superhero. I hope it does well, but what can you do for a sequel? DD has one of the lamest rogue's galleries out there, so they might have to tap SONY for some of Spidey's baddies.

Nice review. You were able to give us your take without giving away details. The special effects on the commercial look really cool. I like his "x-ray" sight effect.

To be honest, when I heard that BA was going to lead in DD, I wasn't too thrilled about it. I agree w/your assessment that he ought to be stuck doing soap operas or maybe even put he and Keanu on an island so we don't have to see either one of them again.

However, I thought you did a good and "neutral/objective" review of the movie w/out giving anything away. I'm looking forward to seeing if Marvel can make it 2 in a row. The Hulk, I'm sorry to say, looks like it might miss a bit for me...but I hope I'm wrong.

Reading your movie news thread above, it looks like it could be a great year to be a Marvel fan!

Now then...if only someone had the courage to do a Marvel/DC crossover movie...THAT would rock!

Oh yeah...one other thing. Jennifer Gardner is HOT!!!!

They're all collected in trade paperback form as Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller. It comes in 3 volumes.

I realize I shot be shot saying that Jennifer Garner has a "butter face", but it seems that way to me. She's got a hot bod, but her chin looks like she can take a couple of right-hooks or something. It looks a little too man-ish for my tastes like it's missing a cleft in it or something. Don't get me wrong-I wouldn't kick her out of bed!
One thing I was a little disappointed in the Elektra character was that she didn't seem to really feel enough "ninja" to me. Maybe it was because she wasn't wearing her comic-book character's garb. I dunno. I'm actually going to check out the movie again.

I agree. Her cheeks and jaw just look too "square-ish" for a woman. She still has a nice bod, though.

I am looking forward to seeing this movie! I think the casting could have been better, but I still want to see it.

I hope that it's better than Spider-Man.

I don't know about a "butter face", but I know I'd like to "butter her muffin"!

As for Cabo Kid's comment about Keanu Reeves, I agree. His best acting role to date has been as Ted in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure". He was comical with his wannabe, lame-ass, surfer-dude English accent in "Bram Stoker's Dracula".

Here's the definition of high-maintenance: Hollywood's new "power-couple". JHo can't have P-Dummy anymore so now she's tanning-bedded herself into him! Ben Affleck, I swear, wears a hair-piece!
