In my experience, Win 2000 is great at detecting new hardware, but a real bitch at finding drivers. I haven't used Win Me yet. So, I was wondering, which is better?

(I'm just curious to hear JWS "Gates" 5150's opinion on this.)

For the ultimate in compatibility, Windows Me is the one you want - Windows 2000's hardware support is improving with every little service pack, but it's got a LONG way to go. WinMe is based on the old, sorta reliable Windows 98 core, which makes it ultra-compatible but can be extremely unstable at times.

It's worth noting that WinMe doesn't readily support older devices, because support for Real Mode DOS was removed to make it boot faster. This goes into a really technical gray area that I don't want to bore everyone with.

But for current hardware, nothing beats WinMe. And Windows 2000 is tons better than WinNT 4.0, which didn't even support Plug And Play

I'd be very much inclined NOT to install win 2000 on any home machine from what I've heard, it's just not tooled out to handle home user's applications..

Stick with ME for most people. It's good, but less of a leap than 95-98, so dont expect a radical difference

If you've got Win98, your best bet is to stick with Win98...WinMe's got a ton of troubles, not to mention a prerelease IE 5.5 and Media Player 7...

They added a ton of junk in Windows Me that, besides System Restore, is what I would label "unneccessary."

It's good preinstalled, but it can be a treacherous upgrade.

Hey, it *is* targeted to home users - I'm a bit biased against it, I'll admit - I'm more of a "power user" - sleek & fast is my game

    Shit, I'm already fucked up.

My notebook came with Win '98 on it, but it was incredibly unstable and kept crashing all the time, so I put all my shit on zip disks and stole someone's Win 2000 CDs and reformatted the hard drive just to see what would happen.

For a long time, my Ethernet card didn't work, but I FINALLY got the right driver for it. I actually don't have a clue what I did now, but it started working again, so I'm a happy camper.

    Thanks for the info, guys.

Its probably not gonna be a big deal on a notebook, Im speaking more along the lines of video cards, sound cards etc etc.. I've heard games players in particualr having huge prolems

Notebooks probably not gonna be a problem though. Too late anyway by the sound of it LOL

For most everything, I use W2K, but for gamers and home user who don't enjoy messing under the hood so to speak I think Win 98 (NOT SE) is the best bet!

I just bought a notebook for my other half and it came partitioned with Win ME installed. I reformatted with W2K and had problems locating drivers etc, so I got rid of the partition and formatted it with ME, and so far she seems to be happy.

I guess it all depends on what your doing, and how complex your hardware profile is, cause I can't say too many bad things about w2k, but I'm not a big gamer and my system is quite simple, (although I found that ME had more driver problems then 2k on my system)

Well, I put me on both mine and my ladys PC about 2-3 weeks ago and had no problems at all... trhe network part actually works a lot better than win98 from my experience.. seems sweet so far.. mind you i formatted both hds and did clean installs, so maybe the problems start with upgrading over an existing copy of 98 or whatever. Both our pcs are goo specials (Basically invoving me running round a computer market getting all the parts and throwing them in a shopping trolley, then building it at home) so if they can pick up all the bits and bods ive got put in them without problems, then its ok in my book lol!

I work with both here at work. Personally I think Windows ME is a peiuce of garbage. Windows 2000 is miles above for my work needs. Now at home that's different. At home I have a typewriter

Win2K has the best power management for a notebook, bar none. You don't need Windows Mfe (More Fatal Exceptions) for that.

Homeunit, I agree Win98 original is better than SE - SE never likes to shut down, even after applying that patch. I installed a joystick, though, and now it shuts down perfectly

And Goo installed WinMe the RIGHT way - clean installin' that sucker.

Win2K would be my OS of choice - since my work requires constant uptime (and I have zero tolerance for failures), a rock-solid platform would be nice.
