Why does everyone hate this song so much? It smoked live.

It certainly doesn't represent much musical growth after Fair Warning, but it's a good, fun time song. I think people are naturally inclined to look poorly on the cover tunes of Diver Down as compared to the stunning original work on the album before it (Fair Warning) and the one after it (1984). Plus Eddie's negative vibe towards DD and its not being represented on the Best Of album haven't helped its reputation.

Dancing in the Streets is ALOT better than Where Have All The Good Times Gone.

I gotta be one of the people to speak out against Dancing In The Streets. Here is my reasoning:

    A) I really was never crazy about the original song to begin with (that's never a good sign for the COVER version of the song)

    B) It annoys me that Ed wrote such a fantastic original opening riff and then ended up having to tag it to the beginning of a cover song!

The topic of this thread is my least favorite song that Van Halen ever recorded. But this is just my opinion here....

    How about everyone else?

That's the only reason I can tolerate it so to speak? I mean the song did smoke but the ablum version is lame IMO. Now I've seen it done live and the effects Ed uses are different than the studio version, I think that effect in the main riff he uses totally enhances the song 110% and I wonder if he realized that after the track had been made? Or not, who knows ...

Dancing In The Street isn't terrible, but not bad for a cover song. I think it's pretty stupid that it was released as a single for Diver Down, Little Guitars or The Full Bug would have been much better choices.

Or just a good original. What's ironic is that most people don't like DD very well, but it sold lots more than FW did(and everyone seems to like it more). DD shoulda had more originals on it.

I used to like the song, but thanks to radio overkill I can't listen to it anymore. They have played that song to death But I'm sure after awhile I'll listen to it again.

I know man. That's the same reason I'm not too fond of Hotel California. WAY too much play! But at least they overkilled DITS rather than not playing VH at all. I guess it's not all bad.

I think Dancing In the Streets is a good VH song. It's not the best on Diver Down though. Why did they do so many cover songs on DD anyway. I like most the originals on there better than the covers.

I think the VHE stated something like "covers plus lots of Dave equals success" or something like that.

DD would naturally sell more copies because it's released with 2 classics that people already know...This helps because most music listeners(not VHLinkophiles) want the same thing time and again...

I enjoy DD...great memories from that album...

Dancing is cool, but then again I'm prejudiced toward ANYTHING Motown...

They put out the Pretty Woman single, and it went over really well. Well enough that WB and TT wanted an album, and they wanted it yesterday to capitalize on the momentum from Pretty Womam. The band was just off a tour, and hadn't planned on doing an album then. They didn't have many originals ready to go. So they Van Halenized some tunes that had worked for other people.

Actually they had a demo full of originals that could've been re-recorded!
