Now I know how the fookin turtle felt

I don't know what time I posted last but it took that long just to hop to the main read one thread and get back here
This is the slowest it's ever been
I could actually click "go" to another forum
go downstairs throw in some laundry.....
get a drink....come back and wait for the threads to come up.
    I can't use my scanner-"file error"
I have this fookin box that says
System Registry Error-click OK to restore
etc...it never goes away....even the computer man for our business didn't know how
    to fix that one

I'm thinking my next computer is going to be a Mercedes
Please give good descriptions in your posts...at the rate I'm going....I'm
going to get my house clean/while I'm on the Links

That Registry error is a nasty one. I've run into it a few times at work. Made it work once, and reformatted the other 2 times.

If it's any consolation, the Links has been feeling a little slow on my end too lately.

I'll see if I can find you some instructions for solving that registry problem. I've got them, somewhere...

You'll save yourself a bunch of grey hairs if you just reformat, the registry is an ugly place to go

But if you have data that you can't lose, and no second harddrive, or a burner, I wish you the best of luck, just don't get lost!

And no it doesn't make anybody want a Mac

Reformatting is a pain, in a lot of ways. You've got to back up your bookmarks, your address book, network settings, and any files you feel you need. The plus side is that you get to set it up all over again, and things should seem faster. Your software problems will go away, for a little while.

That fix I posted doesn't make you journey into the depths of the registry. Try it first, and then reformat if you have to.

Homeunit, you're a stuborn guy, you know that? I subtly point out the true solution, and you refuse to walk towards the light.

hehe The funny thing is at school I force myself to use the Mac lab, cause I'm intrested (and I'd like to think openminded) about things I'm unfamiliar with, but man I do not like the imac at all
Everytime I try them I think of you, and wonder what the heck you find so great about them
Although pre-Win2k I might have sung a different tune, but now, you couldn't give me an imac, although I'd be intrested in trying (not owning) a G4 or whatever their latest model is!

As a last resort Try going to www.iolo.com, download the trial version of system mechanic, and use it to give your registry a clean out (its pretty foolproof).. try some of the other disk cleanout things too.. I use it and its not too bad.

Obviously. this is if you can get it to download and work lol

    Thanks guys

    I wrote everything down......it
only took me 20 minutes this morning to get here
I wonder if I kick this piece of crap a couple of times......it might do the trick.
The next thing I want to make sure I get a GOOD computer, here is what I'm looking at:
    Dell-Pentium 3/800MHz
    128 MB
    30GB
    32MB Graphics
CDRW-8x/4x/32x (what do these numbers mean
    anyway?)
    etc.
Thanks again, I'll try the suggestions
above, if you don't hear from me for awhile
you know I'm digging a grave

Well, MikeL's solution could work for the registry problem, but you probably also need a cleanup. Here is what I would do:

Run Scandisk - fix any problems
find *.tmp on the c-drive - delete all files
find *.chk on the c-drive - delete all files
if you use napster - find *.mp3 on the c-drive - delete anything in the incomplete folder and also songs in the napster folder you are no longer interested in
In the control panel, in your internet settings, on the general screen - delete your temporary internet files and also clear your history
also look for downloaded files that you might no longer need - you can search your drive for *.zip as a lot of them will be compressed this way, but if you have a common folder where you keep them, view in explorer and delete what you don't need
    try defrag again.
reinstall windows if the regedit problem doesn't clear - reformatting should be a last, last resort!
    Hope some of this helps!

I couldn't live without my G4 though I guess it's what you're used to that counts. I'm forced to use Windoze at work, as well as on a 700mhz/P3 laptop they (kindly) provided. The OS is completely counter intuitive, trying to fix things (which happens frequently) is a pain in the ass. I'd had it about 2 weeks when it crashed AOL and corrupted the drivers so Windows wouldn't open at all.

With the Mac OS it's always been very straight forward to navigate and sort out problems - and once OSX comes out it'll be all over but the shouting

It means (roughly) that it can burn discs at up to 8x the normal play speed, rewrite discs at 4x and read at 32x.

So for example you could copy a 72 minute music cd in 9 minutes, though generally people don't do them at more than 4x in my experience to prevent errors.
