Anthrax: To Be Or Not To Be
After being thrust into controversy surrounding their name this past October, New York band Anthrax have decided not to change their name in spite of the same-named bacteria showing up in U.S. mailrooms following the September 11th attacks in the Big Apple and Washington, D.C. Instead, the band have decided to provide a link on their web site, www.anthrax.com, to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention so that people can become better informed about anthrax, the bacteria as opposed to Anthrax, the band. So, once and for all, Anthrax the band remains Anthrax the band.

Former GUNS N' ROSES Axeman Barred From Seeing Band In Vegas! - Jan. 1, 2002

Former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash was turned away at the door of Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on Saturday, December 29th when he tried to enter the venue to see Axl Rose and his backing crew perform their second US gig in eight years, the axeman told ABC News Radio. A security guard reportedly confirmed Slash's account, blaming Rose for the exclusion. Axl, the sole remaining member from GUNS N' ROSES' classic Appetite For Destruction line-up, allegedly told the venue he would walk offstage if he saw any of his former bandmates in the audience. In other news, fans attending Saturday's show have reported that a professional film crew was filming the entire concert, presumably with the intent of releasing the finished product to the public later in the year (although we wouldn't hold our breath).

GUNS N' ROSES' Axl Back To Old Tricks At Vegas Gig - Dec. 31, 2001

Notoriously temperamental GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose reportedly walked off the stage twice at the group's December 29th concert at Hard Rock Hotel and Casino after his mic went dead during the song “Oh My God”, according to live reports posted at www.mygnr.com. The sound problems were eventually sorted out, but not before guitarist Robin Finck threw his guitar and Axl's mic stand in disgust over the technical issues at the gig. When the show did eventually continue, Rose reportedly performed the songs without directly addressing the audience, save for a lengthy 15-minute tirade prior to “November Rain” in which Axl called the gig "the first show in 10 years that I wanted to do" and referred to last year's New Year's Eve Las Vegas appearance and the subsequent Rock In Rio gig as concerts that he was “asked” to do. The singer then went on to say how former manager Alan Niven forced them to tour in 1991, which resulted in the latter's getting fired. With regards to the European tour, Rose reportedly claimed that he had “no idea” a tour had been scheduled. "One day I was sitting at home on the Internet and I found out that the GNR tour was cancelled and I had no idea that I had a tour," the singer was quoted as saying at the gig. As for the band's long-awaited Chinese Democracy CD, Rose stated that "we're in the studio doing this album and I can promise you that we're gonna deliver, and it's gonna be out of the ballpark… We've been working on this album and I can tell you we're doing our best and that's all I can promise." The singer also stated, rather unbelievably, that guitarists Buckethead and Finck had never met before rehearsals for the House Of Blues gig last year, and he made derogatory references to ex-GUNS N' ROSES bassist Duff McKagan and guitarist Slash, as well as other former GNR members, using the band's celebrity status for themselves, which was met by a chorus of boos from the crowd.

Here is GUNS N' ROSES' set list from their performance at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel and Casino on Saturday, December 29th (note: “Night Train” was also reportedly included on the official set list, but ended up not getting performed):

    01. Welcome To The Jungle
    02. It's So Easy
    03. Mr. Brownstone
    04. Live And Let Die
    05. Oh My God
    06. Think About You
    07. You Could Be Mine
    08. Sweet Child O' Mine
    09. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
    10. Madagascar
    11. November Rain
    12. Out Ta Get Me
    13. Rocket Queen
    14. Chinese Democracy
    15. The Blues
    16. Patience
    17. My Michelle
    18. Silk Worms
    17. Paradise City

The Lord of the Rings Steaming Along!
    Tuesday, January 1, 2002 10:27 CST

New Line Cinema's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" earned an estimated $58.1 million during the five-day New Years weekend.

The film has returned a staggering $156 million after 12 days in 22 territories -- just a little more than the picture's domestic total of $154.7 million (after 12 days).

Variety reports that the worldwide receipts of $310.7 million for the first picture in the "Rings" trilogy exceed the studio's hopes for $300 million in two weeks.

Peter Jackson Talks The Two Towers
    Monday, December 31, 2001 8:53 CST

According to Dark Horizons, "The Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson and others revealed more information during interviews in New Zealand.

It was hinted that the role of Arwen (Liv Tyler) will appear in the second film though in the books her character doesn't appear again till the third. It also looks like the Eowyn (Miranda Otto) / Faramir (David Wenham) romance subplot will be expanded from the novels. Finally, writer Philippa Boyens talked about the possibility of adapting "The Hobbit" and while there's no plans as yet to do so, she's not sure whether she would do it as its a very difficult adaptation (over 15 major characters and a sudden shift in tone) - basically she, Jackson, etc. won't even consider it for a while yet.

There will probably be a lot of interest for them to adapt that book as well after the trilogy's over with.

    Emily Watson Talks Red Dragon
    Monday, December 31, 2001 8:22 CST

Emily Watson, the female lead in the remake of "Manhunter," talked to Cindy Pearlman about the film. Watson plays Rebecca McClaine, the blind girl from the book Red Dragon. She's joined by Hopkins as Hannibal, Edward Norton as the investigator plus Harvey Keitel as the police chief and Ralph Fiennes as a nutcase.

"It's a lot different from the Michael Mann movie 'Manhunter,' which left out so much," Watson divulges. "This is much closer to the book." The movie finds a young Hannibal being arrested by the cops and then helping find Watson who is being held hostage by Fiennes. As for the gore factor, Watson says, "The movie 'Hannibal' was more graphic than our movie. We're telling a story that's much more like 'Silence of the Lambs' in that it left a lot to your imagination."

One thing that's piqued our imagination is how Hopkins will play a much younger role. "I'm just pulling the sides of my face taut," he jokes.

McCallum on Jango Fett in Episode II
    Wednesday, January 2, 2002 8:24 CST

Empire Online spoke "Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones" producer Rick McCallum, who says that the prequel's iconic anti-hero is none other than Mandalorian bounty hunter Jango Fett.

Given his action debut in the recent trailers, Jango, father of Boba, looks to be poster boy for "Attack of The Clones" and if there's one action figure guaranteed to be on every child's Christmas list next year, it's this one.

"He is the ultimate accessory dude," McCallum says. "Forget all the bull**** that we have today - colour mobile phones - this dude knows how to party. He comes to it with everything."

Given that Boba Fett's brief appearances in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi made him one of the all time favourite Star Wars characters, it's not too much of a leap to imagine Jango will follow in his offspring's footsteps. "He's my favourite," enthuses McCallum, "he's my dream - to have the ability to walk into a studio meeting with that gear on, and say, 'Dude, I've got an idea.' If one of those young punk studio execs starts with, 'Well, Rick…', BOOM! I would just open up… I can't tell you what I would open up, but it would be brilliant."

We haven't had any real contact with each other there because we don't like each other, Pierre, and that makes for some very colorful sparks, all right. And I've got to admit, and got to say that it's inevitable, that there would be a reunion, it's one of the most hotly anticipated reunions in the history of the sport, OK? I wouldn't be surprised if it was relatively soon, on our lifetime while our clothing is still in style hopefully! Ya know it's like my Dad said, always told me, "Don't be humble, you're not that good." Dave, November 13, 2001

The secrets of ''Terminator 3''. What you're not supposed to know (yet) about the long-awaited sequel by Brian Hiatt

Warner Bros. Pictures won a bidding war earlier this month, plunking down a reported $50 million for the right to distribute what may be the most expensive movie ever made: ''Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines.'' With a leather-clad Ah-nuld returning to the battle-hardened franchise, analysts say the deal is a near-certain coup for Warners (two outside production companies are funding the majority of a budget that could reach $170 million).

But before ''T3'' rumbles into theaters on July 4, 2003, moviegoers who've memorized every Austrian- accented quip from the first two films will have to adjust to some changes. ''Terminator'' auteur James Cameron will be gone, as will be stars Linda Hamilton and Edward Furlong, leaving Shwarzenegger as the sole returning creative force. Jonathan Mostow (''U-571'') will direct from a script by John Brancato and Michael Ferris (''The Game'') -- and a female Terminator will be along for a ride. Here's what else to expect:

Sarah Connor: Terminated After starring as waitress-turned-warrior Sarah Connor in the first two movies, Linda Hamilton (once married to James Cameron) opted out of ''Terminator 3.'' ''I retired as a champ,'' she tells EW.com, explaining that the role reached its peak in the second movie. But she was less diplomatic in an October interview with the English newspaper The Independent. ''I read the script and it didn't take my character in any new direction,'' Hamilton said. ''It was like a no-win situation for me. The best I could hope for was that I wouldn't be compared too unfavourably with myself 10 years ago. Without Jim breathing the breath of life into the film? No thank you.'' Rather than attempt a ''Hannibal''-style actress transplant, ''T3'''s producers have sliced Sarah Connor out of the script. ''They may have said, 'If we can't get her, why bother,''' says Hamilton's manager, Bobbie Edrick. ''It's better to write the role out than try to replace her.''

John Connor: Replaced Edward Furlong made his movie debut in 1991's ''Terminator 2,'' playing Sarah Connor's son John, who's destined to lead humanity in future battles against machines that take over the world. But Furlong, who has reportedly struggled with substance abuse, will not appear in ''Terminator 3,'' despite earlier reports that he had signed on to the project. (his publicist didn't respond to requests for comment on his absence). A ''T3'' casting call distributed to agents (obtained by fan site Dark Horizons) says that producers are looking for an actor between the ages of 20 and 24 to play John Connor, who is supposed to have aged a decade since ''T2.'' John ''has been struggling with an uncertain future, not trusting that the nightmares that haunt him are over for good, '' says the casting information, which describes the role as ''extremely complex... requiring tremendous emotional range and intensity.'' Hayden Christensen, call your agent now.

Kate, Brewster, and Scott: Added The casting call lists three major new characters (Warner Bros. and ''T3'''s producers declined comment on the document, which is presumably subject to change). Kate, the movie's heroine, is a ''young professional with a medical background'' who ''can give both John Connor and the Terminator a run for their money.'' Brewster is a high-ranking military officer with a science background; the ''Terminator'' series' looming nuclear apocalypse is supposed to occur after the U.S. military's computer system develops a mind of its own, so we'll probably see Brewster dealing with that little problem. The third new guy is Scott, ''a successful young professional who has everything going for him.'' Until the Terminator blows his head off.

The Terminatrix: Watch out! Long-running rumors of a female Terminator are true: She will be ''sexy, beautiful, composed and lethal,'' according to the movie's casting call. And ''T3'''s producers say they're looking for a performer of ''any ethnicity or nationality,'' as long as she's in fighting shape and between the ages of 20 and 30 -- a category that could encompass anyone from Lucy Liu or Jessica Alba to ''Mission Impossible 2'''s Thandie Newton. The character will have powers that dwarf even those of ''Terminator 2: Judgement Day'''s morphing T-1000. ''She can disappear, she can mold into someone else, and she is sometimes just an energy,'' Schwarzenegger earlier told the New York Post.

Most other details of ''Terminator 3'' are as secret as anything gets in Hollywood. (To prevent leaks, each copy of the script has its owner's name marked on every page, according to one source familiar with the production.) It is known, however, that the movie will shoot in Vancouver and Los Angeles beginning in April. Pre-production has already started, including discussions of casting and special effects. George Lucas' firm, Industrial Light & Magic, which did Oscar-winning CGI work for ''T2,'' is in talks to return for the third movie, according to sources close to the project (an ILM spokesperson declined comment). And hey, did we mention that Arnold will be back?

    QOTSA Take Drivers Ed

Band's "Better Living" to be used in highway safety film

    Better driving through chemistry

File this one under "strange ironies of modern rock": Critically revered heshers and known revelers Queens of the Stone Age have provided the soundtrack to an educational film about the dangers of driving while drunk or drugged-out. At the request of the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego Sheriff's Department, QOTSA have lent their stoned anthem "Better Living Through Chemistry" -- from 2000's Rated R album -- to a short film to be shown in area high school's drivers education classes.
While "Better Living" (featuring such lyrics as "The blue pill opens your eyes/Is there a better way?") would seem an unlikely choice for anything promoting personal safety or civilian well-being, Queens frontman Josh Homme says the decision to give up the song was an easy one.

"I feel like doing donuts in San Diego County and dropping my name when the cops come," he says. "Dude, it's a get-out-of-jail-free card. I just want to be in league with the cops."

Given that QOTSA have for years extolled the virtues of various intoxicants, one might logically gather that Homme and bandmate Nick Oliveri have at some point had occasion to drive under the influence. Homme deflects questions to this end and instead offers his vision for better highway safety.

"I sort of feel like the roads should have those inflatable arm-floaties [the kind kids use in a pool] along either shoulder," he says. "And that all cars should have 'em too so you could just bounce off everyone."

The as as-yet-untitled instructional clip should be informing San Diego students by next semester, and an abridged version of the video might find its way onto local television.

Meanwhile, QOTSA are mixing their forthcoming third album, Songs for the Deaf, due this spring, with Eric Valentine (Third Eye Blind, Smash Mouth), who also co-produced the record with the band. The revolving door neo-metal collective have this time invited the likes of Dave Grohl (drumming on all but one track), ex-Screaming Tree Mark Lanegan and Ween's Dean Ween to join their thundering party.

    Slash Unwelcome to the Jungle

When it comes to a Guns N' Roses reunion, Slash is apparently not welcome to the jungle.

Per the orders of his old GN'R bandmate Axl Rose, Slash was banned from seeing the revamped GN'R play a pre-New Year's gig at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel and Casino.

The former GN'R guitarist, who happened to be in Vegas over the weekend, was turned away at the door when he tried to slip in to the sold-out show Sunday and see the Rose-fronted band.

Slash was barred from entering by security guards acting on orders from Rose, who threatened to walk off the stage if he saw any of his former bandmates in the audience, according to ABCNews.com.

Apparently, Axl's order wasn't Slash-specific: It extended to all the former GN'R players and covered both the Sunday and Monday shows. Rose is the only one left from the group's Appetite for Destruction, late-'80s glory days, when he, Slash, guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler owned the music world with hits like "Sweet Child 'O Mine," "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City."

One by one, the original GNR'ers exited the group--usually due to acrimony with Rose--and new members were rotated in.

Sunday's show marked only the second time in eight years that Rose and his hired Guns have played before an American crowd. Rose, who owns the GN'R name, previously got his new sidemen together for a New Year's Eve gig in Las Vegas last year.

The new lineup consisted of eight musicians: Rose, two keyboardists (including Dizzy Reed, the lone holdover from the band's Use Your Illusion days), former Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson, guitarists Robin Fink from Nine Inch Nails, Paul Tobias and Buckethead, an avante-garde instrumentalist known for his work with Primus and Praxis.

During the show, Axl addressed the controversy surrounding GN'R's much-hyped European tour that wasn't, telling the group he never agreed to contract terms and that it was prematurely announced online. He also blamed legal bugaboos for the breakup of the original lineup and the revamping of the group.

While the warm-up show on Sunday was plagued by several technical snafus that occasionally drowned out Axl's screeching, by all accounts the following night's New Year's Eve show rocked.

The band took the stage around 11 p.m. and ripped through a two-hour set that drew mostly on Appetite-era material. They also played some new tracks off their (very) long-awaited forthcoming album, Chinese Democracy, including "Oh My God," from the End of Days soundtrack.

Rose danced around his guitarists and was uncharacteristically all smiles. Later on in the set, he came out and wailed, "I think it's time. Are you guys ready for some KFC beats?!" At which point, Buckethead came out and did a little dance with nunchaku before segueing into his guitar solo--Darth Vader's theme from The Empire Strikes Back. He then grabbed an acoustic for a rendition of "Patience."

"It was probably one of the best concerts I've ever seen," concert-goer Jesse Costello tells E! Online. "The lineup is absolutely amazing and the band is incredibly tight right now. I hate to say it but it was definitely worth the $220 per ticket and $75 worth of merchandise I bought after the fact."

    Paradise City, indeed.
