I don't like trade tarrifs in general, but sometimes they're needed. What's the softwood market like? Do countries with competing industries have high tarrifs as well?

Kind of a different direction, but the EU is subsidizing their farmers at many times the rate we are, in an attempt to capture the world agricultural market while damaging the American farm industry.

Same idea Mike, they're saying that we're being subsidized by the US because we can delieve the product cheaper then the locals.

I do believe that this is a violation of the initial FT agreement.

Our government is already talking tarrifs on our fossil fuels, and water.

I do think it'll be revoked though.

Apperantly we're already talking to the WTO about it, we'll see

I think we need many MORE tariffs, but Christ, not with Canada. Japan, Korea, China, yes...a NAFTA country, NO.

Oh, and it would be nice to see the US severe its ties to Israel; instead of imposing tariffs on all those Israeli imports (whatever they may be), we just give 'em cash. Not a good policy.

Bear in mind that the lumber industry is fast becoming a 'great evil' for many environmentalists, and as such will likely be on the butt end of a LOT of bad trade deals.

The lumber industry (in the US, anyway) seems to be pretty responsible. They know where their bread is buttered, and keep renewing their resource.

Tariffs on the whole are bad, I think. They just support weak or non-competitive industries in the long-run. If a country can't compete, it shouldn't be in that industry. All tarrifs do is encourage companies not to invest in themselves by developing newer, more competitive products and processes. That and increase costs for consumers.

Unfortunately, if any major trading country chooses to use tariffs almost all of them are forced to. That's where the WTO is a good thing. Eventually, if countries want to trade it's going to have to be at face value. Fuck'em if they can't compete.
