    Ryan Adapting Max Payne Videogame
    Friday, April 19, 2002 12:38 CDT

Dimension Films and Abandon Entertainment have signed a deal with Shawn Ryan, creator-executive producer of FX series "The Shield," to adapt the shoot-'em-up videogame "Max Payne".

"Max Payne is an incredible character with a rabid fan base," Ryan told Variety. "As a writer and a gamer, I was ecstatic when Bob Weinstein offered me the opportunity to pen this potential franchise."

"Payne" concerns an undercover DEA agent out to avenge the murder of his wife and child -- a complicated endeavor, since he's been set up for the death of a fellow narc in Gotham.

Released for PC, Sony's PlayStation 2 and Microsoft's Xbox, the game has sold more than 1.8 million units worldwide since its release last fall.

    Fraser Up for McG's Superman?
    Thursday, April 18, 2002 6:51 CDT

Superhero Hype! has received word that a certain Mummy-fighter may be a frontrunner to play "Superman" in the next McG-directed film...

The (other) nugget I am about to drop is about the casting of the star to play Clark Kent/Superman. A McG choice, WB are set to offer (the role) to Brendan Fraser [The Mummy, The Mummy returns]. There is also the possibility that Pinewood Studios will be used to film the movie.

They should really go with an unknown! This is going to be cheesy!

Greatest American Hero Nearing Production Start
    Thursday, April 18, 2002 11:13 CDT

Upcomingmovies.com has learned from a reliable source that Touchstone Pictures is aiming to start production on "The Greatest American Hero" in late 2002 or early 2003.

According to the site, no casting has been announced yet for the adaptation of the early 1980's ABC TV show of the same title, which starred William Katt (Carrie) as a hapless math teacher forced into becoming a superhero. Robert Culp played his FBI agent sidekick, and Connie Sellecca played his girlfriend.

Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, the writing team of "Never Been Kissed," penned the screenplay.

Planet of the Apes 2 in Limbo?
    Thursday, April 18, 2002 11:54 CDT

Producer Richard Zanuck revealed to columnists Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith that, though his "Planet of the Apes" has brought in some $380 million worldwide, 20th Century Fox has yet to decide when, or if, it will proceed with its follow-up.

"The studio made a lot of money on the picture, but because the budget was so high, it's in no hurry to do another," he says.

The first film cost just a little over $100 million -- modest by today's standards for major studio adventure yarns that require extensive special effects. However, Zanuck says of the sequel, "It could be a couple of years." Or not at all.

Zanuck also produces "Road to Perdition" and "Reign of Fire," which both hit theaters on July 12.

IGN Filmforce reports that British actress Saffron Burrows ("Deep Blue Sea," "Timecode") has auditioned for "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen's" sole female lead, ex-Dracula
love interest Mina (Murray) Harker. Althoug no deal has been made, Burrows is being actively considered for the role in the comic book adaptation.

In "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," Queen Victoria assembles a team of literature's greatest adventure heroes (including Allan Quatermain, Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll, The Invisible Man, and Mina Harker) to thwart an evil madman. Ferrigno Films Hulk Cameo
    Posted: Thursday, April 18, 2002
    by R. Worley

Back: Raimi: Bringing The Amazing To Life
    Next: Hulk Sr.?
    1983

After years of rumors, debunkings and more rumors Comics2Film has confirmed that former TV-Hulk Lou Ferrigno does, in fact, have a cameo role in the currently-filming The Hulk.

Sources at Universal Pictures have informed us that Ferrigno has a small role in the new film. No other information was made available at the time of this writing.

Ferrigno is best known for playing the green-skinned goliath to Bill Bixby's Banner in the TV series The Incredible Hulk. The show ran from 1977 to 1982 and spawned many spin-off TV movies, culminating in 1990's The Death of the Incredible Hulk.

Ferrigno returned to his greatest role more recently in the under-appreciated 1996 animated series, also titled The Incredible Hulk.

    Movie News
    Dolph Lundgren retiring
Made a splash with ROCKY IV, worked in action fare for years

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Friday, April 19, 2002

    By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
    By: News Editor
    Source: EW

It’s sad to say, but onetime heavyweight heavy Dolph Lundgren, 44, has announced his retirement. It seems the man who broke onto the scene as a superhuman Soviet boxer opposite Sylvester Stallone in ROCKY IV and went on to star in a million and one direct-to-video genre entries has had enough.

“I'd like to enjoy the next 20 years with my family and kids and [take] it easy,” Lundgren is quoted as saying in ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY.

He also starred in UNIVERSAL SOLDIER, a derided adaptation of THE PUNISHER and the big-screen version of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE, and appeared in the James Bond film A VIEW TO A KILL.

BAKERSFIELD, California — With nearly a decade of hits to their name and a command of large audiences that would put Tony Robbins to shame, Green Day are a hard act to follow. No wonder, then, that Blink-182 took a page from one of rock's biggest bad boys Wednesday night in an attempt to avoid being overshadowed.

Facing an opening-night Pop Disaster Tour crowd that had expended most of its energy during Green Day's set, Mark, Tom and Travis found that even their onstage fireballs were no match for the ones their elder peers had singed the Centennial Garden with less than an hour earlier. So when the time for the obligatory encore came, crew members rigged Travis Barker's drum platform for a Tommy Lee trademark move.

About two-thirds of the way through Blink-182's first encore number, "Reckless Abandon," wires attached to Barker's rig lifted the shirtless, tat-covered drummer and his kit into the air, drawing it forward over a clearing in front of the stage. As the belted-in Barker began a solo, the platform slowly rotated a complete 360 degrees two times before spinning backward once and returning to the relative safety of a pyrotechnics-laden stage. It was a scene straight out of Mötley Crüe's 1987 "Wild Side" video, which most of the crowd was no doubt too young to have seen.

Prior to that, the twisted trio had been working hard to hold the crowd's attention, making sure to pepper their onstage banter with references to the "beautiful and sexy" audience's hometown. Blink's set list stuck mainly to Enema of the State (1999) and Take Off Your Pants and Jacket (2001), though it also included the show-closing "Dammit" from Dude Ranch (1997), the string of obscenities "Family Reunion" and a "touching" (literally) little ditty purportedly about singer/bassist Mark Hoppus' perverted grandfather. For that one, Hoppus set down his pink bass and knelt at the edge of the stage to croon about his grandpappy's affinity for rubbing certain body parts in broken glass and putting fingers where they shouldn't be.

The evening began with a decidedly different tone as Jimmy Eat World played a half-hour set of earnest rock and roll to a rapidly filling arena. Performing before an image of the American West landscape (think mesas and buttes), the Arizona quartet kicked things off with "Bleed American," the first track off their latest, self-titled album, but got the biggest reaction with the follow-up single, "The Middle." The first band to score a gold record while contending with the "emo" albatross closed with the new single "Sweetness" before handing things over to Green Day.

With red lights flashing and sirens blaring, Billie Joe Armstrong and company took the stage accompanied by a flurry of explosions and a fourth member, Jason White (Pinhead Gunpowder, the Influents). White was there to lend an extra guitar when needed, and to fill in for Armstrong when the singer would swap his instrument for a squirt gun, making the best seats in the house the wettest as well.

The group kicked things off with the new song "Maria" before taking the crowd on a greatest-hits journey through its career, beginning with "Longview." Armstrong crisscrossed the stage with his exaggerated shuffle, egging the audience on and handing over entire verses for the mass sing-along. With bassist Mike Dirnt pausing his cartoonish spasms to slap his own head in time with Tre Cool's drum beat, the band launched into another Dookie (1994) hit, "Welcome to Paradise."

By the third song, Nimrod's (1997) "Hitchin' a Ride," Armstrong had the audience eating out of his hand, which he waved like a traffic cop to conduct a chant of "Hey, hey, hey!" that eventually led back into the song, complete with crescendo scream and 20-foot flames.

The audience participation reached its peak during the group's cover of Operation Ivy's "Knowledge," for which the band was joined by a trumpet player and a trombone player wearing black mariachi outfits. When their parts were done, the brass players danced with their hands on their hips as Armstrong, wearing a black shirt, black pants and a skinny white tie, stood on a monitor and soloed behind his head. With Dirnt and Cool carrying on the rhythm, Armstrong announced, "We're gonna start a band onstage right now."

Surveying the audience for musicians, he invited three fans to take over the song. Though the kids he picked weren't so proficient at their parts — "That was awful but beautiful," Armstrong would say afterward — they were much more graceful doing the stage dives he forced them to execute when finished.

"This will make up for that," Armstrong promised as the band began "Basket Case," which led into "She" and then "King for a Day." The frontman hammed it up, donning a gold crown for the ode to cross-dressing, later tossing it and hitting Dirnt. The bassist, standing next to a brass section now dressed as a bee and a chicken, reacted only by shaking his head quickly and wagging his tongue.

More hits and more crowd-pumping followed, until confetti cannons cast sparkling red clouds in the air and Cool tumbled over his drum kit. With the stage bathed in purple light, a lone spotlight shone on Armstrong as he sang the band's crossover hit "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)." After one last big strum of the guitar, Armstrong walked off the stage.

The house lights came on, revealing that the band's brass section — back in mariachi outfits — had made its way to the arena floor to dance with fans. The duo joined the slow-moving mob headed toward the restrooms and the concessions, the bowled brims of their mariachi hats teeming with red and silver confetti.

    Courtney Love: Crazy or Not?
    by Joal Ryan
    Apr 18, 2002, 3:30 PM PT

Fans and critics alike have long joked about it, but now her late husband's bandmates want the question answered once and for all: Is Courtney Love crazy?

In court papers filed last week in Seattle, surviving Nirvana rockers Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic have asked a judge to order the former Mrs. Kurt Cobain to undergo a psychiatric exam. And do it before June 1, no less.

Grohl and Novoselic aren't just being curious (Is she or isn't she...?). They're just getting down and dirty in the ongoing battle over control of the Nirvana legacy.

At issue is whether Love, 37, can break a business partnership she formed with the Nirvana guys in 1997. She sued to dissolve Nirvana L.L.C. last June. The two sides have been warring in court ever since.

"There is clearly an objective basis for believing that Ms. Love is not competent," the new petition filed by Grohl and Novoselic says. (The latest documents are available online at TheSmokingGun.com.)

To make their case, the Nirvana alums' court document highlights the, um, outspoken Love's colorful past: her hiring and firing of "countless managers, attorneys and band mates"; her drug use (as "openly" acknowledged by Love herself); and an almost-fistfight last month with "young recording artist" Christina Aguilera (as "openly" claimed by Love herself, natch).

The petition relies a lot on Love's own words. (That's what you get for being outspoken, we guess.) A couple of key quotes (from an Internet posting and an interview with MTV) have Love saying she was "stoned" when she agreed to establish Nirvana L.L.C.

Indeed, Love's side has argued in court that she shouldn't be held accountable for agreeing to go into business with Grohl and Novoselic because she was "significantly impaired" when she signed the paperwork.

Still, Miss Love ain't jumping at the chance to undergo a psych exam, as requested.

"Presumably, [Grohl and Novoselic] would select the psychiatrist and specify the scope of the examination," Love's attorneys said in a document filed with the court Wednesday. "Shades of Frances Farmer."

Frances Farmer was an outspoken 1930s-era leading lady (immortalized in the Jessica Lange starrer Frances) whose one drunken-driving arrest turned into an 11-year-stay in mental hospitals. She is the namesake of Love's daughter with Cobain, Frances Bean.

While Nirvana fans know that Love was regarded as the Yoko Ono of the grunge world well before Cobain's death, her relationship with Grohl and Novoselic turned especially nasty last year during a dispute over whether an unreleased Cobain track, "You've Got No Right," could appear on a forthcoming Nirvana box set. Grohl and Novoselic wanted the song included; Love didn't.

Love got her way on that count--"You've Got No Right" will be MIA when Heart-Shaped Box comes out in December.

A hearing on whether Love will be forced to undergo the psych exam will be held Friday in Seattle.

In case you're keeping score at home, Love versus the Nirvana guys is only one of the court cases that's keeping the stripper turned rocker turned actress turned tabloid regular busy these days. She is being sued by Universal Music Group for delivering only two of seven promised Hole albums. And she, in turn, is suing Universal, accusing it of "unconscionable and unlawful" business tactics and challenging the standard artist contract.

COAL CHAMBER Experience "Dark Days" Ahead - Apr. 18, 2002

COAL CHAMBER frontman Dez Fafara reportedly walked off stage 20-25 minutes into the group's set last night in Lubbock, Texas after announcing to the confused audience that they had just witnessed “the last COAL CHAMBER song...ever!” The three remaining members then proceeded to play two more songs with guitarist Meegs at the mic, before the band called it a night, with drummer Mikey demolishing his kit on his way out.

According to eyewitness reports, the anti-climactic ending to the group's performance was the culmination of an ongoing dispute between Dez and guitarist Meegs, who made no secret of their open disdain for each other during the brief set, with Meegs reportedly hitting Dez with his guitar, kicking speakers off the stage, and spitting on the singer at various points during the show.

Rumors of in-fighting in the COAL CHAMBER camp have been running rampant for years, with friction between Meegs and Dez being largely blamed for the group's withdrawal from 2000's Tattoo The Earth trek (although the official reason was that the band wanted to “focus on writing the new album”).

COAL CHAMBER are expected to resume their Jagermeister tour with DROWNING POOL and ILL NINO tonight at Diamond Ballroom in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Jurassic Park 4 in the Works?
    Friday, April 19, 2002 8:45 CDT

E! Online hears plans, so far, are to pull a "Dallas" number ("It was all a dream..."), pretend "Jurassic Park III" never happened and end the series, once and for all, with the fourth film.

"Which means there'd be no place for William H. Macy and Téa Leoni, who both have options to return. For now, only Ian Malcolm and John Hammond are on the drawing board," says the trade's Anderson Jones. "Johnston's moving on, and Universal's considering a host of brand-name directors--including at least one Oscar winner. Even Spielberg may want to direct, but that, of course, means the film may never get made."

Meanwhile, 'Tom' reports in with news from a recent interview with Jeff Goldblum in a BBC newspaper. Seems that Jeff Goldblum said, "Yes their working on a script now, but I don't know what it's fully going to be about. I only know the preemies. And Steven said this is going to take the Jurassic Park series to a whole new level..."

He goes on to mention that the fourth film will not take place on either Isla Nublar or Isla Sorna.

In a recent interview for the British film magazine Total Film, David Fincher went through his list future of projects. Here's what he had to say:

    THE BLACK DAHLIA
"We're still working on this. Josh Friedman's writing a script and we're trying to get it under 240 pages. The thing I love about the book is that it's not really so much about the killing of the Dahlia [wannabe actress Beth Short, who was brutally murdered in a crime that stunned '40s America], it's a tale of sexual obsession, it's about the politics of murder, and the politics of the feeding frenzy of the press. Ellroy is awesome."

    SQUIDS
"It's kind of like the boat ride up the river in Apocalypse Now, except on a $200 million submarine with nuclear warheads. It's a very scathing look at American military foreign policy at the end of the Reagan era, so it's exactly the wrong time to be making this movie. The white power structure very rarely wants to look at its shortcomings."

    RENDEZVOUS WITH RAMA
"Morgan Freeman brought this project to me. But it's a very tricky adaptation, because the book's been pilfered so often since by movies like Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Armageddon and even Alien. It's a survival movie, it's what it would be like if five satellite repairmen rather than scientists had first contact with extraterrestrial intelligence."

    HARD BOILED
"Nic Cage brought this to me. It's about a robot who thinks robot's are despicable and can't believe he's a robot himself. But I don't know what we're gonna do with this. Frank [Miller] has an idea, and I think he's a genius, so I'll follow him anywhere. But I don't know what he's got in mind yet..."

    SEARED
"It's a kind of sex comedy about celebrity chefs in New York. But it's too obscure to really explain. It's what Soderbergh calls 'a purification project', like Dogme. You've got to do it all hand-held, with no storyboards, no pre-visualisation...It's sort of a romp - or as much of a romp as I can do!"
