The long summer nights always bring back fond memories of my childhood. Staying outside late and playing games with all the kids in our neighborhood. Is it me or does it seem like kids dont do stuff like that anymore? We used to play Red Light/Green Light, Kick the Can and Red Rover. Do any of you remember these games? What did you do when you were a kid in the summertime?

"That's the sounds of summertime" - Dave from a bootleg.

Yep, 'remember Red Light/Green Light, kickball..
We also played lots of baseball/wiffle ball/tennis ball, before gearing up for football. Sometimes, we'd just run passing routes to practice, or "Punt Returns". The latter was quite nasty indeed

Catching lightning bugs (I hear that some areas of the US don't have these), watching the neighbor's fireworks display, street picnics.
We spent so much time outside, that we'd be covered with mosquito bites Simple stuff, but we had a blast.

In the summertime when the weather is high
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find

If her daddy's rich take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor just do what you feel
Speed along the lane
You can dine on a dollar twenty-five
When the sun goes down
You can make it, make it good in a lay-by

We're no threat, people
We're not dirty, we're not mean
We love everybody but we do as we please
When the weather's fine
We go fishin' or go swimmin' in the sea
We're always happy
Life's for livin' yeah, that's our philosophy

Sing along with us
Dee dee dee-dee dee
Dah dah dah-dah dah
Yeah we're hap-happy
Dah dah-dah
Dee-dah-do dee-dah-do dah-do-dah
Dah-do-dah-dah-dah
Dah-dah-dah do-dah-dah

Alright ah

When the winter's here, yeah it's party time
Bring your bottle, wear your bright clothes
It'll soon be summertime
And we'll sing again
We'll go drivin' or maybe we'll settle down
If she's rich, if she's nice
Bring your friends and we'll all go into town

In the summertime when the weather is hot
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find

Just being outside all day long was a great memory for me. Not a care in the world except who's going to break the record on the Pac-Man machine at the local 7-Eleven.

Red Light Green Light. I hear about that a lot. Must be a west coast thing.

We used to play lob league baseball all day in the summer, and all of us were in the little league too, of course ended up playing on the same team when we were on the travelling pony league. Lob league was fun because we played on the pee wee diamond and would hit it over the fence, over the alley, and nail the garages. People would call my house, "Damnit, your kid hit my garage with one of them damn balls again!"

Some of those garages had old paint, and man, we really forced them to repaint.

At night, when we couldn't play ball, or we didn't have a pony game, we would dress up in black t shirts and shorts and play tag around the block, or around the school property. We'd hide behind cars, bushes, in the bushes, in trees, whatever. Some of the guys were awesome at sneaking up on us when they were "it". That shit was way fun. We'd normally play on a block that one of us lived on, and keep the back yard open to drink from the hose (at your own risk).

I miss it.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX - 2005 WORLD CHAMPIONS

The Chicago White Sox (1901-present) - The Original SOX - Proof

The Boston Americans (1901)
The Boston Somersets (1902)
The Boston Pilgrims (1903-1906)
The Boston Red Sox (1907-present) - Proof

The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.

out on the BMX bikes early, back home around noon to hit the pool, back on the bike in the afternoon, mom left for work about 5 PM, an hour after she leaves, back out on the bike. in at 9 or so, watch some MTV, play some Atari (this was the 80's, baby), maybe back in the pool...as long as i was home at midnight, when mom got home from work, i wouldn't get caught doing stuff i wasn't supposed to be doing...usually on Friday nights we'd go to work with mom, since she worked at the movie theatre. never a dull moment...

My thoughts exactly! I live by the beach (albeit it's a beach on one of the 5 Great Lakes, Lake Ontario and not the ocean) but it's still a great place to be in summertime...!

The only thing you forgot to mention is ice cream and cold beers too! (though not one right after the other! )

Can't wait for summertime 2002!!!

I'll be down at the beach with some music and some beers! wooHOO!

10 years of sleep-away camp (8 weeks a summer)
and, when I was 16/17 (it's kinda fuzzy) i went on a teen tour.. these where the best summers of my life! especially the teen tour! We had the "Glands Across America" joke going on t-shirts & hotel "do not disturb" signs all over this great land of ours.... GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Wiffle Ball pretty much from the time I got up until it got dark. Some nights we'd even pull lamps out of the houses and play at night!

When we were older we started playing a lot of kick the can at night.

My mom had a boyfriend who had a camp on Lake Wentworth in New Hampshire where we'd frequently spend time. Sometimes I fought because it took me away from my friends but I'd almost kill to have a place like that to go now!

Watched a little baseball, collected a few baseball cards, waited for football cards...

When I was between my junior and senior year, started working at an amusement park near the beach. did that for 5 summers.

I think kids overall don't have as much fun as we used to - I don't think they know how. All their fun has been preprogrammed from multiple channels of sh*t on TV to a bazillion video games. We pretty much came in for lunch and watched "Beverly Hillbillies" reruns and that was that. Plus I think we've had to restrict them a lot more than we were when I was a kid 'cause there's just too many loony tunes out there. I could pretty much go whereever I wanted to as long as I had the energy in my legs to pedal there, but I don't like the idea of my oldest son going near University Boulevard outside our subdivision, let alone cross it as he'd have to do to get down to the park. People just drive too much like maniacs out there and even if he made it to the park, then I'd have to worry about pervs in the restroom or something.
