Lucas and Ford talk Indiana Jones 4 Scene
    Sunday, April 28, 2002 7:06 CDT

The May 3, 2002 issue of Entertainment Weekly gives this update of Indiana Jones 4:

After years of starts and stops, the Indiana Jones empire seems to be shaking off its cobwebs. Producer Kathleen Kennedy says a new writer will begin penning a script in June, with a first draft due by the fall. (Her office denies a report that it could be Oscar-winning Shakespeare in Love scribe Tom Stoppard.) The fourth chapter in the Indy saga will be based on a story recently written by cocreator George Lucas, who tells EW that the biggest challenge facing Harrison Ford's Dr. Jones this time may not involve snakes or sword-weilding heavies. "There is a scene where a lot of Indy's ex-girlfriends show up, but they are not major characters," says Lucas, hinting that both Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Mrs. Steven Spielberg, Kate Capshaw (Temple of Doom) might cameo. So what does Indy himself think of a reunion with his former flames? Says Ford with a wink: "It's probably going to be the best scene in the movie."
".....and Harry Potter and all of his wizard-friends went to Hell for practicing Witchcraft. The End." -Ned Flander's version of reading "Harry Potter" to Rod and Todd.

Vin Diesel Makes a Fast Exit
    Monday, April 29, 2002 5:40 CDT

Variety reports that Universal's has broken off talks with Vin Diesel to reprise his role as Dominic Toretto in the sequel to "The Fast and the Furious," and the film's original director, Rob Cohen has also been scratched from the starting line. The film will now be built around Paul Walker's cop character Brian O'Conner, a role he's reprising.

The trade says industry buzz indicated that money was the major reason that Diesel is out. But a spokesman for Endeavor, which reps Diesel with the Firm, said, "Financially we all agreed, however it came down to purely a decision to continue with Vin's commitment to 'The Chronicles of Riddick.'"

The Michael Brandt/Derek Haas-scripted "Fast and the Furious 2" will star Walker as a cop stripped of his badge who's recruited to infiltrate the Miami street racing circuit in an effort to redeem himself.

Universal and Diesel are still all-systems-go on the "Pitch Black" sequel, "Chronicles of Riddick." Universal has brought in Oscar-winning "A Beautiful Mind" screenwriter Akiva Goldsman to do a rewrite and will seek A-list talent to shoot the film later this year.

RUSH frontman/bassist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson commented to CDNOW recently about the heavy-handed nature of their forthcoming album, Vapor Trails (due out on May 14th). "Alex wouldn't let me put any keyboards on it!," Lee exclaimed. Lifeson says, "Yes, that was the law ... because they suck. I just thought it would be great if we used more organic instruments to achieve the same sort of background sounds the keyboards were providing in the past. I wanted to create things with the guitar and with Geddy's voice."

KING'S X are currently preparing for their Manic Moonlight U.S. Tour Part III. The dates run from May 29th in Charlotte, NC to July 9th in Indianapolis, IN. In other news, Ty Tabor (King's X guitarist/vocalist) is finally releasing the New Age recording originally made in 1996. Ty had been tampering experimentally with a Roland guitar synth and recording sounds/ideas just for fun. This turned into an instrumental record (just under 30 minutes) that was given to close friends and family as a present for Christmas 1996. After being urged for years to release it to the public it is now being made available over the internet. This is not a rock record or solo album in comparison to Ty's normal solo work. It is completely instrumental with very little recognizable guitar work. However, all sounds on this recording were played with a guitar thru a Roland guitar synth. It is also "live" in that nothing was "midi sequenced" or "quantized" for perfection. Ty decided to leave the project "as is" with no repair work done. It is in its original state as it was given to his friends and family in 1996. Sound bites are provided to give an idea of the type of music represented on this record. Six songs, all instrumental, all experimental, and relatively simple in nature are provided as a collector's CD. To check out this limited release visit: www.tytabor.net for details.

Former FAITH NO MORE singer MIKE PATTON was arrested recently following a gig at the Astoria Club in London with his band TOMAHAWK. Patton reportedly urinated into the photo pit mid-gig, nailing photographers and journalists in the line of fire. It was discovered after his arrest that he had in fact filled a plastic dildo with water and used it rather than Patton Jr. as his firearm.

Brook to Replace Jolie in Tomb Raider 2?
    Monday, April 29, 2002 7:01 CDT

Although it's not confirmed, Tomb Raider Chronicles reports that ex-Big Breakfast presenter Kelly Brook is reportedly in talks with movie producers to replace former Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in Paramount Pictures "Tomb Raider" sequel which begins principal photography in May.

Jolie, who is finalizing the adoption of a Cambodian baby with husband Billy Bob Thornton may not want to appear in the adventure sequel despite confirming last year she would resume the role of Core Design's British aristocrat Lara Croft.

Kelly Brook can next been seen starring opposite Christopher Lambert and Ron Perlman in the thriller "Absolon" which is due to start shooting in Canada in the next few weeks.

PHILIP ANSELMO: LAYNE STALEY Wasn't Strong Enough To Fight Addiction - Apr. 29, 2002

PANTERA/DOWN singer Philip Anselmo has spoken out about the passing of late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley and the growing indications that his death was drug-related. Anselmo, who went through a well-publicized heroin overdose in July 1996, told Billboard magazine that Layne “wasn't strong enough to shake it off”.

“There's a way you can the guy had to understand there are methadone clinics all throughout the United States that are willing to help you,” Anselmo added. “They could have definitely helped him and saved him and given him his life back.”

PINK To Cover GUNS N' ROSES Classic On Upcoming Tour - Apr. 29, 2002

Rising pop star PINK will reportedly be covering the GUNS N' ROSES classic "Sweet Child O' Mine" on her upcoming tour, according to Rolling Stone magazine. PINK, whose latest release, Missundaztood, has been certifed double-platinum for sales in excess of two million copies in the US, is said to be a longtime GNR fan.

In related news, the current issue of Spin magazine reports that current GUNS N' ROSES guitarist "Buckethead insisted that a human-size chicken coup be constructed in the band's recording area. CLAWFINGER Continue Work On New CD, Add New Family Member - Apr. 29, 2002

Swedish rap-metallers CLAWFINGER have finished writing 10 new songs and have another 3-4 that are half ready, according to the latest posting by band vocalist Zak Tell, “but we need at least 10 more songs before we have enough material to choose from in order to make sure that it's a top quality album that we release.” The as-yet-untitled effort is currently being conceived at a recording studio the band purchased in conjunction with fellow Swedes MESHUGGAH, and is tentatively due to be issued in late 2002/early 2003.

In other news, Tell and his girlfriend welcomed a baby boy named Felix on March 19th, and experience that the frontman insists has changed him completely.

“I have never experienced such a great feeling of satisfaction, happiness and responsibility,” the singer stated. “All of a sudden, my priorities have changed, and my main concern is to make sure he gets all the love and security he needs in order to become a secure and open-minded individual. Being a dad has totally rocked my world and life will never be the same again…thank God! As a result of this great happening, I have not had the time, lust or energy to also be in the studio, so the other guys have been working without me for the last five weeks, which of course has slowed things down a bit, but there's a time and a place for everything, and right now, my place is at home and my time is for Felix.”

Also on the CLAWFINGER front, the band have issued a collective statement about the recent passing of ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley, with whom CLAWFINGER toured during the early '90s. The statement reads as follows:

“ALICE IN CHAINS were the first band we ever toured in Europe with back in 1993 and they were the one band that all of us in CLAWFINGER loved and adored! Their music was honest and heartfelt and not many other bands were as truthful, beautiful and painful all at the same time, Layne will be missed but remembered for the great music he created together with the rest of the band! Most of all they were just sweet, down-to-earth guys who treated us like friends. Thanx for the best start we could get in this twisted rock'n'roll business! Good luck with all things to come guys & Layne we hope that you're happy wherever you are! Respect & Admiration! Zak & the Claws!”

NAPALM DEATH Vs. BOLT THROWER: Let The Mud-Slinging Begin! - Apr. 29, 2002

A public war of words has erupted between NAPALM DEATH and BOLT THROWER over what is being perceived as a mutual lack of respect and behind-the-scenes bickering that has apparently been going on for years.

Although personal issues between the two camps have been brewing for quite some time now, the tension between the pioneering extreme metal acts had up until recently kept private, with neither side going public with their differences. However, that all changed recently when NAPALM DEATH frontman and freelance music journalist Mark “Barney” Greenway wrote up a less-than-stellar review of BOLT THROWER's latest CD, Honour Valour Pride for Britain's Kerrang! magazine, upon the publication of which BOLT THROWER guitarist Gavin “Gaz” Ward responded bitterly as part of an on-the-record interview, thus escalating the feud into the public arena.

“As far as Barney is concerned, the kid's a c.nt,” Gaz told Digital Metal when reminded of Barney's Kerrang! review. “No sh.t. I wouldn't say that, and I don't mean to slag NAPALM, 'cause I think they're a chicken-sh.t band. Enemy of the Music Business? My god, they are the music business. [laughs] As a personal point, I wouldn't review another band. I see that as low — bands reviewing bands. Does it really get any worse? We just have no respect for NAPALM. They're a poser band. Quite honestly, it's BOLT THROWER and NAPALM are the only bands from the old U.K. scene. Strange, isn't it?

“As far as we're concerned [NAPALM DEATH are] gone. I think they pull a few people in England, but in Europe they're gone. I heard [NAPALM DEATH's] last small club tour was a flopper.”

Barney, for his part, wasted little time in responding to Gaz's disparaging remarks, issuing the following statement via the message board of NAPALM DEATH's official web site:

“I've been loathe to break my silence on this cause I've got more worthwhile things to worry about. But it's getting so ridiculous that I feel I should at least try and address the issue.

As anyone in the scene will testify, certain members within BOLT THROWER are among THE biggest sh.t-talkers against other bands etc. I've been hearing this for years through pretty reliable people, and it's really f.cking tedious.

“Gavin, in particular, is a really f.cking bitter and twisted individual — although I was good friends with him back in the day. Yes, there is some personal history between me and him, but that's the way it's going to stay: personal. Baz, the other guitarist, is actually a really nice bloke. [Bassist] Jo I always got along with. But now [vocalist Dave] Ingram is getting involved, through such scary terror tactics as informing me in so many words through a London radio station that NAPALM had better watch out because BOLT THROWER had sold out a venue in Germany that somehow made them top dogs in the NAPALM vs. BOLT THROWER war that's kicking off only in their own heads. Dave, if you ever get to read this, grow up you f.cking baby and come back to me when you've got a vocal identity of your own and a bit of presence in your voice (OWCH! couldn't resist that. Sorry people.)

“One of the biggest sticking points was a review I did of their latest album in Kerrang magazine. Now, yeah, maybe I did feel a bit uncomfortable about doing it at first. But I get asked opinions about lots of bands, am always honest and feel that if you can't speak openly about music, then something's wrong. I mean, look at all the sh.te NAPALM has had to weather down the years. Like, just deal with it. Whatever you feeelings about Kerrang, i try and give honest opinions for the benefit of the people who are going spend 10 quid plus on albums.

“Actually, if you read the review, I feel it's pretty balanced. BOLT THROWER are stuck for bloody riffs, but there's still a certain something about them that makes for a decent listen. Terrorizer, it seems, thought the same, and another reviewer on Kerrang might have kicked it to pieces. Swings and roundabouts and all that.

“There are PLENTY of people who'll testify to the arsehole nature of some BOLT THROWER members ([NAPALM DEATH bassist] Shane being one of them), but I don't want to go into it any more for now. Just to say that if they consider it the lowest of the low for another band person to judge their band, they should look in the mirror and cease with the volume of sh.t-talking that they've been indulging in for many years.”

“There's a way you can. The guy had to understand there are methadone clinics all throughout the United States that are willing to help you,” Anselmo added. “They could have definitely helped him and saved him and given him his life back.”

CELTIC FROST Prepare To Record New CD - Apr. 29, 2002

CELTIC FROST are currently writing and developing material for a new album in Zurich, Switzerland. This is the culmination of a process initially set in motion during the compilation of the official CELTIC FROST re-issue CDs in late summer 1999. The re-issue project reflected the first time the various former members of the band worked together again after CELTIC FROST's termination in early 1993, in spite of the fact that the band has had several major offers over the years to record or perform again. Some two years of behind-the-scene efforts have preceded the present activities, and work on the album started in earnest in late 2001.

The musicians involved in the current writing sessions are Martin Eric Ain (bass and vocals), Reed St. Mark (drums, percussion, and vocals), and Tom Gabriel Fischer (voice, guitars, and keyboard). This is the classic CELTIC FROST line-up which was responsible for the albums To Mega Therion and Into the Pandemonium. As already in 1987, the band will be completed by a second guitarist as a permanent fourth member.

There has been an abundance of interest in the project from the music industry, and the band has held extensive talks about a new recording agreement in Germany, England, and North America. An official announcement regarding record company and album is expected later this spring. The album will contain largely new material, and it will not be identical with the shelved Under Apollyon's Sun double CD of 1992/1993, although a small number of songs from that album are being considered for inclusion. The new album is also likely to feature Part III ("Winter") of the "Requiem". Part I ("Rex Irae") was originally released on Into the Pandemonium in 1987.

PLANET US, the side project band featuring Michael Anthony (bass—VAN HALEN), Neal Schon (guitar—JOURNEY), Sammy Hagar (vocals—ex-VAN HALEN), and Deen Castronovo (drums—JOURNEY), performed two songs at the 2002 California Music Awards this Saturday, April 27th at the Henry J. Kaiser Arena in Oakland, California. The tracks were described as very heavy and different to anything the artists involved had done before—“a bit along the lines of H.S.A.S. (another Hagar/Schon project) but heavier,” according to one eyewitness—and were reportedly met with a very enthusiastic reaction from the near-sold-out crowd, who “went nuts” when the music started. The event also included a full live performance from Hagar, who will be embarking on a US co-headlining tour with fellow ex-VAN HALEN singer David Lee Roth at the end of May.
