I've been down in Florida so long that I have forgat what it's like to vote without something going wrong somewhere.....I'm going to go vote later after work.....but my local radio station is reporting problems with a few precincts allready. They were interviewing people who didn't get to vote becuase of these "problems".

    How's it were you live?!?!

Same here--I had no problems with chads, dimples, any bullshit like that. My ballot scanned through with no errors.

If people could read some fucking instructions, these problems would be almost nothing.

What would be so hard about having a standardized format of ballot nationwide, with the instructions: "mark an X in the box beside desired candidate" or something? Rather than having complicated machine scored cards that differ from county to county? Keep it simple.

You know, here in Ohio we've been using the punch card ballots for eons. They experimented with some electronic ones for non-election day local issues (like school tax levies), but we're still living in the electoral dark ages.

Funny thing is, we've never had any hanging or dimpled chad problems. Hell, my girlfriend and I voted at the same time and we both took the time to check that all of our holes were punched properly - they were the first time.

Makes me think some people are too old to be voting down there in Florida. Either that or just too plain stupid.

Yeah, we had some problems. The wrong guys won.

There was a local polling station that had been redistricted from 1,600 voters to something like 3,200. Turnout was high, and they weren't ready for that many people. Long lines, long waits, and angry voters. Some people sounded like absolute boobs when they were asked about the wait on the news. Shit happens.

Hey Mike, were people up there as pissed at that memorial fiasco as it was portrayed on the news or did people just decide 'ole Fritz has had his day?

Here in San Fran, we ran out of voter ballots because they didn't expect such a high voter turnout.

It was a mix, I think. The local TV stations all broadcasted it, and then caught flack for not giving equal time. Their response was to say it wasn't billed to them as a political rally. I watched about 15 minutes of it, which was enough. There was little talk about Wellstone and just a bunch of music while the pols walked in one by one.

I don't think it swayed anyone's opinion, but perhaps it motivated more people to get out and vote. Coleman portrayed himself as a level-headed Republican, and talked up his experience in St. Paul. Mondale never really countered with his own experience, perhaps thinking that people would know it already. About a third of the electorate here isn't old enough to be very familiar with him. Both sides had to really shift their campaign messages in the last week.

The only probelm we seem to have is that it takes forEVER to count the damn ballots in Oregon. I have NO idea why that is, but we are always last in tallying in the whole country. We stopped counting at midnight or so and continued in the morning. I'm thinking that may be a reason but I don't know if other states do the same thing....funny, the Republican candidate for Governor, Kevin Mannix, said that if the vote counting was done by the private sector it would have been done hours ago! lol ....dumb thing to say about the people counting before the count is over though. He lost by less than one percent.

They need to just have voting done on the internet or setup machines at the polling places that people can punch in their SSN or some pre assigned code word and vote that way with a GUI interface.

Why are in this age of computers, technology and communications and we still have to vote via punching out little spots on a card?

Isn't it because Oregon is the only state in the country that does its voting 100% by absentee ballot? So they have to wait for all of the ballots to be mailed in? I think I remember reading that during the 2000 election debacle.

Apart from that, Oregon politics have always been a bit unconventional. They have a reputation for being intentionally different.

Yes, but they all need to be postmarked by Friday so they should have them all there by tuesday evening easily, and all ready to just be counted. I'm sure it has something to do with it, but I'm not sure how. Seems like it would be fairly simple. Whatever, we have a Democrat Gov. now. I can blame it all on that.
