First off, it's a known fact that I'm computer slow, so if any of this stuff is pathetic, that's my excuse. And, as I've told anyone who helps me with this type of stuff, always assume I know nothing, and it'll be easier for me to understand.

Anyway, I got this HP computer about 5 months ago, and the virus scan was pretty basic so I just bought and installed a McAfee Virus Scan package yesterday. It took me 6 tries to install it but finally it did. But now the arrow on the screen (moved by the mouse) seems choppy at times. When you bring a new page up, if you move the mouse around while it's coming up, it's like it's cutting in and out. Any idea as to why it's doing that, or is that somewhat normal? BTW, the virus scan has run through the whole system and it's clean.

Also, I keep getting booted off the net with a message that says "this program has performed an illegal function". When it comes up, you have to click it, and when you do it exits from the internet. I'm on cable hookup with Internet Explorer if that means anything. Anyway, this message allows you to view the details, but there just script, so I can't understand what they mean. Should I cut and paste this script and if I did, would anyone know what it means? Or is the computer just being an asshole, and there's really no explanation? I talked to a guy at the store I bought the computer at, and I kid you not, he said the reason for the problem is that "windows 98 sucks". That's pretty helpful.

My wife, who if it's possible actually knows less about computers than I do, thinks the problems are because I've downloaded Napster, AOL IM, etc. I think she's wrong, but then I don't really know either. Any help at all would be great. Thanks.

I just disabled the System Scan portion of this virus scan. If enabled, it runs constantly while the computer is on. And disabling it seems to have taken care of the screwy mouse problem, at least for now.

Another think, is Disc Defragmenting something I should do periodically?

Glenn, do defragment regularly, it helps performance. Thanks for reminding me, BTW.

As for your illegal operations--virus scanners are notorious for interfering with your computer's operation. It's possible VShield (the 'shield' icon) is interfering with the browser. You may want to install IE 5.5 Service Pack 1 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/download and see if that doesn't stabilize your browsing.

Virus scanners are so invasive--it's not all Windows 98; it's just the virus scan program.

    1) uninstall all virus scanning software you have. It sounds like your conflicting with your old scanner.
    2) Go to Windows update, (start/window Update) and make sure your up to date.
    3) Run scandisk to check for and fix any errors, (start/programs/accessories/system tools/scandisk)
4)Re-install the virus scanner you just bought.
    4) Update that software (virus scanner) right away.

    that should do it.

    Napster won't cause those problem
IM shouldn't (but I had Yahoo IM and it messed my system up)

Homeunit, if I click on Windows Update it takes me here http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
I can pretty much assume that I'm (or at least my computer) isn't up to date. So do I click "Product Updates"? If I do it brings up a security warning asking me if I want to install and run Microsoft Active Setup. Do I want to do that?

Goo emailed me and is saying pretty similar info. He figures I should uninstall the virus scan, do a disc cleanup, do a disc defragmentation and then re-install the virus scan CD. I figure I'm going to do that, but not til I get back tonight since I figure the defragmentation will take a while.

    Thanks for the info.

One other thing in case Goo or Homeunit step back in here. Which of the computers probs I mentioned do you think the de-installing and re-installing is going to clear up? The choppy mouse thing, or the illegal message thing?

    both hopefully

Do go to win update and get all updated (you'll need to make several return trips from the sound of things) before you defrag and run scandisk.

Okay, I downloaded something (not sure what, they seemed to think it was important. Christ I'm pathetic) from the Windows site. Then I de-installed the virus scan, did a disc cleanup, ran the scandisc, defragmented the hard drive and then re-installed the virus scan. Everything seems better so far, we'll see if it continues.

One thing I still don't understand is that when I put the CD in to re-install the virus scan it still came up with a message saying it detected (and would remove) a previous virus scan. But it re-installed the virus scan and it seems to be working.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Seenbad, run ScanDisk first, then try to defrag and see if that doesn't work.
