7 Navy ships here in San Diego received their orders this morning, and will be headed out to the Gulf this Friday. I knew about this 2 weeks ago, but at the time it was supposed to be 8 ships, not 7.

Over 10,000 Sailors and Marines will be deployed on this ships Friday morning. My brother-in-law, who's stationed on a cruiser, will be leaving tomorrow as part of the USS Carl Vinson battle group.

    The story:

San Diego Ships Get Deployment Order
    Ships To Set Sail Friday

    POSTED: 10:10 a.m. PST January 14, 2003
    UPDATED: 11:51 a.m. PST January 14, 2003

SAN DIEGO -- Seven San Diego-based amphibious warships have received orders to deploy in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The ships will depart Friday morning.

Nearly 10,000 local sailors and Marines from San Diego Naval Base and Camp Pendleton will be deploying to the North Arabian Gulf region.

The deploying ships are the USS Boxer, USS Bonhomme Richard, USS Cleveland, USS Dubuque, USS Anchorage, USS Comstock and the USS Pearl Harbor.

While under way, the ships will be under the command of Capt. Kenny Golden, commander of Amphibious Squadron 1. He will be aboard the Boxer.

The transfer of thousands of members of the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force to San Diego Naval Station began Friday, continued Saturday and Sunday and was ongoing as the workweek began, according to USMC public affairs officers.

As many as 45,000 Marines and sailors from the 1st MEF could be deployed to the Persian Gulf in the coming weeks, according to the Marine Corps. That includes the 7,000 Camp Pendleton-based Marines who have been convoying to San Diego Harbor over the last four days.

"A lot of wheels are turning," Lt. Dan Rawson said.

Last week, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld ordered 35,000 troops to the Persian Gulf, followed by 27,000 more on Saturday.

The actions were part of a series of deployments aimed at boosting U.S. troop presence in the region to 100,000 by the end of the month and 150,000 by mid-February, according to Rumsfeld.

About 50,000 U.S. military personnel are already in the Middle East, including several hundred Camp Pendleton Marines now billeted in Kuwait and Qatar.

They went overseas in November for the Internal Look exercise, then stayed in case of any action against Iraq.

Thousands more troops are headed their way, including 4,000 Marines and sailors who left San Diego last week.

Also in the gulf is the Constellation, based in San Diego, and its escort ships. It is the only U.S. carrier group there with planes patrolling Iraq's southern no-fly zone.

This is it, people. It's almost "go-time".

But it only works well enough to keep it around 90 or so during the day. Also, remember, the ships are metal and really just huge conductors for heat. Especially in water that is between 88 and 92 degrees. Still, way way way better than being on the ground. Way way way way way better.

I'm working with a company that runs the restaraunts and gallery's on base at pendleton and a few other bases down there. They say that they have notice to be able to prepare sack lunches on immediate notice and to staff appropriately so that soldiers can move immediately and take a grab bag if needed. Interesting.

Question for you Navy dudes, SO if these guys get on a ship in Cali or any other west coast base how long of a boat ride is it to the Gulf?

And WTF do they do during that time? Sit and watch the seaguls? How does one entertain 2000 Marines?

It's about a 20 day transit to that region. I've been there before, and it's basically the gateway to hell. There are also several other things to factor in; any stops/port calls in between here and there, ship speed (though I doubt most ships would be ordered to hit top speed. You have to conserve fuel.), engineering casualties which would significantly decrease a ships' ability to maintain its course and speed, and anything else that might happen. Murphy's Law is alive and well onboard a Naval ship.

How does one entertain 2,000 Marines? Well, since they're just riders, most of their time is spent working out (almost constantly), weapons training (familiarization fire with their M-16's off the flight deck), taking "Hollywood showers" (and using up a substantial supply of water onboard in the process), cleaning their weapons, watching TV, and sleeping. I've been on 5 ships that embark Marines, so I speak from experience.

Yeah, as long as it works. That goes for the evaps also, the things that make fresh water. "Armpit and Asshole" showers are no way to live.

Agreed. Going through the straights at the beggining of the gulf war was .....tense, as we didn't know our alies in the region yet and there is only a few miles wide.

Anyways, when we got the call in San Diego, we were there in less than five days. There was a fuckin rooster tail comin' off the back of it, and I was on a friggin aircraft carrier.....thats hauling some very serious and very major ass for a ship that size. We were the first carrier into the region and wasted literally zero time getting there. 20 days is a good number to go by during peace time. When there is a reason to get somewhere though, believe me, they step it right up. I'm still amazed to this day. Top speed on all vessles are classified, but we were definetaly on the plus side of what they top out on in the informational brochures.

The Chicago White Sox (1901-present) - The Original SOX - Proof

    The Boston Americans (1901)
    The Boston Somersets (1902)
    The Boston Pilgrims (1903-1906)
The Boston Red Sox (1907-present) - Proof

The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.

Hey Vince just interested in your comment about saving fuel - aren't most of your warships nuclear powered? All the carriers are aren't they?
