Kristanna Loken is the Terminatrix in T3!
    Thursday, February 21, 2002 15 CST

According to Variety, newcomer Kristanna Loken will be the terminatrix who goes up against Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," directed by Jonathan Mostow.

Loken, a 22-year-old actress best known for her work in such series as "D.C." and "Philly" and the film "Panic," has landed the much coveted role of the TX, a cyborg even more sophisticated than Robert Patrick's liquid-metal T-1000 in "Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

In the script originated by Tedi Sarafian and rewritten by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, "T3" picks up the story a decade after the sequel, when a twentysomething John Connor reteams with his cyborg protector to battle the TX.

Spiderman has The Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, The Scorpion, The Rhino, Venom, Sandman, and The Sinister-Six for his most popular villians. The Kingpin originated in Spiderman, but made his mark in the Frank Miller run of Daredevil. The DD movie is based on Frank Miller's run so it has a good shot of at least having a good storyline even though I personally don't like the casting choices. Daredevil basically had all of the cheesy-villians(The Owl, Stiltman, etc.) until Miller changed things in the book for the better.

Connery is Quartermain in The League
    Thursday, February 21, 2002 12:45 CST

Variety reports that Sean Connery is in final negotiations to join 20th Century Fox's "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," based on the Wildstorm comicbook by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill.

Connery will play the lead role of Allan Quartermain, the capo of a group of superpowered individuals culled from great adventure literature: Mina Harker from "Dracula," the Invisible Man, Dr. Henry Jekyll, Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray and their American liaison, police detective Thomas Sawyer.

Sensing trouble for the Empire in the future, Queen Victoria has the British Secret Service secretly put the seemingly disparate team together to stop a villain intent on turning the nations of the world against one another for his own personal gain.

The film will shoot this summer in the Czech Republic and Morocco.

Tekken Game Adaptation at Crystal Sky
    Thursday, February 21, 2002 12:42 CST

The Hollywood Reporter says that Crystal Sky has bought the rights to make a $60 million film version of "Tekken," one of the most successful video game franchises in the world, in association with Japan's Gaga Communications and the game's maker, Namco.

The rights were acquired from Namco after a fierce bidding war, according to Crystal Sky president and CEO Steven Paul at the American Film Market.

"Tetsu Fujimura, CEO of Gaga, and I have wanted to make a big commercial movie together for a long time," Paul said. "I have had a long and wonderful relationship with (him) and Masaya Nakamura, chairman of Namco, for over 12 years now. The time was right, and 'Tekken' was the perfect game to pursue our dreams together."

Benji Returning to the Big Screen
    Thursday, February 21, 2002 12:25 CST

Myriad Pictures has pacted with original Benji writer-director and creator Joe Camp, Lou Pitt and Mulberry Square Prods. to create a new feature film in the franchise, reports Variety.

"Benji Returns: The Promise of Christmas," to be written and directed by Camp, is a contemporary Dickensian-themed drama in which Benji challenges a misguided dogcatcher while struggling to provide Christmas to a pair of poverty-stricken children.

The film will feature a new Benji, a female mutt found wandering as a stray on the back streets of Pass Christian, Miss., after a five-month nationwide search scouring animal shelters and rescue centers.

    Bass In Space
It seems that *NSYNC member Lance Bass' brief stint at Florida's Space Camp when he was 12 years old has paid off. According to officials at MirCorp in Amsterdam, Bass has expressed an interest in boarding the Russian Soyuz spacecraft that would be flown out of this world (literally) from Kazakhstan as part of a routine mission. MirCorp is apparently negotiating with L.A.'s Destiny Productions to send Bass on the mission, as early as this fall. The mission will also be taped for a television special called "Celebrity Mission: Lance Bass." "I am completely overwhelmed at this invitation," reads a statement from Bass. "I'm looking forward to completing this lifelong dream." Not so fast, Bass. No contracts have been signed and no money has been exchanged. Nor have the Russian Aviation and Space Agency or NASA been approached for approval.

    PANTERA's PHILIP ANSELMO Denies Break-Up Rumors - Feb. 20, 2002

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

    ANSELMO DENIES BREAK-UP RUMORS

Philip Anselmo issued an unequivocal "F*ck no" to the recent rumors that PANTERA are breaking up. It seemed the rumors kicked up during a press junket for Anselmo and fellow PANTERA bandmember Rex Brown's side project, the band DOWN. "Side projects always start rumors," stated a spokesperson for PANTERA's management. "It's the nature of the beast." Add Anselmo to the mix and writers get a little itchy. "What can I say," says Anselmo. "I love PANTERA. I'm excited about DOWN. I'm lucky to be in a place where I can make great f*cking music with both bands. We're going into the studio sometime later this year to record the new PANTERA album. End of story."

Meanwhile, the second DOWN album, Down II, hits stores March 26th, with a tour scheduled later this spring.

    Stone Winning the Alexander Race
    Thursday, February 21, 2002 1:00 CST

According to Variety, Oliver Stone is set to direct Heath Ledger as the Macedonian conqueror in "Alexander," to begin filming Oct. 16 in India for a Christmas, 2003 release.

If Stone, who is working with scribe Christopher Kyle ("K-19: The Widowmaker") on a rewrite of Kyle's script, holds to that timeline, it will likely put him in production before either of two other biopics in the works -- and put the Stone version in theaters before the HBO/Mel Gibson 10-part, $120 million "Alexander the Great," which begins airing in 2004.

The chief rivals on Alexander the Great features are "Alexander," which Martin Scorsese will direct with Leonardo DiCaprio starring; and producer Dino De Laurentiis, who is mounting a project based on novels by the Italian historian Valerio Manfredi that are being adapted by "Silence of the Lambs" screenwriter Ted Tally.

De Laurentiis hoped to enlist "Gladiator" helmer Ridley Scott, but the director is considering several grand-scale films and hasn't committed to any of them.

    Zemeckis Helming Hanks' Polar Express
    Thursday, February 21, 2002 12:53 CST

Robert Zemeckis is developing and will produce "Polar Express" for Castle Rock Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures, with an eye to direct, says Variety. The film reunites Zemeckis with his "Cast Away" star, Tom Hanks. The director is working with "Cast Away" scribe William Broyles, who has already penned a treatment.

Based on Chris Van Allsburg's children's book of the same title, "Polar Express" is expected to be a big-budget, f/x-driven event picture, adds the trade.

Castle Rock partner Rob Reiner originally expected to helm "Polar Express" when Castle Rock acquired the book two years ago in a seven-figure deal.

In Metallica, Jason Newsted and his bandmates had the luxury of hiring pretty much anyone they wanted to shoot their videos. But now that he's scaled back his landscape with the grass roots alternative band Echobrain, Newsted has had to bring things closer to home, which is why he recruited his pal and blossoming director Danny Clinch to shoot the video for the group's first single, "Keep Me Alive." The track is from Echobrain's self-titled debut, which comes out March 5 (see "Jason Newsted Ready To Unleash 'Tomorrow Music' With Echobrain").

"Keep Me Alive" is a sprawling cut that blends organic, jangly guitars, weeping cello and melancholy vocals with otherworldly electric guitar noises. The tune evolves from hazy and lazy to block-rockin' in a style reminiscent of latter-day Soundgarden.

"There was a lot of footage [Clinch] shot on this old eight-millimeter camera he bought for a dollar at a yard sale," Newsted said of the song's video Monday from his home in San Francisco. "It's all f---ed up and grainy and scratchy. It's just beautiful."

The Echobrain video was shot last week at various outdoor locations near Newsted's San Francisco studio, and combines performance footage with psychedelic outdoor shots. Unlike the band's promo photos and album art, which obscure frontman Dylan Donkin's face, the video will finally reveal the singer's moody mug.

"We've intentionally kept it all mysterious until now," Newsted said, adding that the video complements the band's enigmatic vision. "I wanted it to be trippy and abstract without being too arty. The music has tons of layers of different textures and players. That's how the video is, too: very bright and vibrant and colorful. Just think of 'Wizard of Oz' colors and wild poppy field sh--. Blue, blue skies, super-green greens."

In addition to shooting "Keep Me Alive," Clinch also filmed footage the band may use for a future video for the more energized track "Colder World," which is already receiving airplay at numerous radio stations.

"It's probably a little more literal than what we're doing for 'Keep Me Alive,' " Newsted said. "There's a lot of wintry stuff — cold breath, frosty faces and ice."

Just because they sing of a cold existence on record, it doesn't mean the gentlemen of Linkin Park can't warm our hearts by doing something nice for charity.

The group is scheduled to perform a special, kids-only show March 4 at the House of Blues in West Hollywood, California, to benefit TrinityKids Care, Los Angeles' first pediatric hospice, providing at-home care to terminally ill children, according to a venue spokesperson. Only those between the ages of 11 and 15 will be admitted with an $85 ticket, which also includes a light buffet.

For the children's parents or fans over 21, a cocktail reception will be held in another part of the venue. Grown-up tickets go for $250 apiece.

The Southern California group, which garnered three Grammy Award nominations, including one for Best New Artist (see "U2, India.Arie Lead Grammy Pack"), will wrap its Projekt Revolution Tour February 24 in Las Vegas (see "Linkin Park 'Rock A Rhyme Like This' At Cheese Country Gig").
