DEF LEPPARD's JOE ELLIOTT: 'We Don't Give A Fuck About Cred' - Dec. 15, 2002

DEF LEPPARD frontman Joe Elliott has denied that corporate interference was responsible for the group's latest album, "X", sounding in places more like BBMAK and 'N SYNC than the work of a hard rock outfit that conceived the band's classic 1983 release, "Pyromania". Speaking to Salt Lake City Weekly, Elliott became defensive when the interviewer suggested that parts of the album are almost unrecognizable as DEF LEPPARD, with the Andreas Carlsson-penned (BACKSTREET BOYS, BRITNEY SPEARS) "Unbelievable" coming across like a "hideous, hysterically bad…blatant stab at one last hit."

"Absolutely not true," the singer shot back. "We don't give a fuck about cred. We give a fuck about making a great record. We've certainly never been puppets and we're not going to start now. And how many people other than the small minority of media people that pick up on the negative side of stuff give a shit?"

Roth, Van Halen in Royalty Spat

    by Josh Grossberg
    Dec 13, 2002, 3:35 PM PT

Forget teacher--it looks like Diamond Dave is hot for profit.

Former Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth is taking his old bandmates to court, accusing them of intentionally withholding royalty payments.

The lawsuit, filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court by the singer and his Diamond Dave Enterprises, claims that guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony secretly signed a deal in 1996 with Warner Bros. Records that gave the trio increased royalties from the Van Halen-Roth era (1977-1986), while cutting the singer out of any financial gain.

The suit contends the group breached its current contract with Roth by keeping the money for themselves, costing him at least $200,000 through last year.

Neither Warner Bros. Records nor Van Halen's manager returned phone calls seeking comment.

To ensure he gets his fair cut (plus interest, natch), the "Just a Gigolo" crooner is demanding a full review of the VH royalties earned not just since the purported secret deal in '96, but since he left the band in 1986. He's also seeking unspecified compensatory, exemplary and punitive damages, and wants the band to bankroll his legal fees.

"This is not the first case--and probably not the last case--to examine entertainment industry financial and accounting practices," Roth's attorney, Daniel Hogue, says in a written statement. "Until the defendants' financial records have been produced and reviewed, we will have no further comment."

Roth handled vocal and lyric-writing duties for Van Halen from the band's inception through the mid-1980s, when he left to pursue a solo career ("California Girls," anyone?).

All told, Roth and Van Halen completed six albums and recorded such seminal rock anthems as "Jump," "Hot for Teacher," "Runnin' with the Devil," "Panama" and "Dance the Night Away." The split was hardly amicable--with Eddie & Company increasingly annoyed by Roth's bigger-than-the-band antics.

Roth did return to record two new tracks with the band in 1996, but a much rumored reunion tour never materialized.

Van Halen has been sidelined for the past few years as Eddie recovered from cancer. In May, he said he was cancer-free and ready to resume recording, although there's been no word on who'll man the microphone.

Roth, meanwhile, rebounded and this summer joined forces with his Van Halen replacement, Sammy Hagar, to coheadline Song for Song: The Heavyweight Champs of Rock and Roll Tour (unofficially dubbed "Sam & Dave" or "Sans Halen," tour).

Roth also taped a weird promo video titled David Lee Roth's No Holds Bar-B-Que, which featured him dressed up like a sailor and doing karate moves during a luau that featured pirates, dwarves and real martial artists. The video was supposedly Roth's bid to get TV executives to award him his own Osbourne-esque reality show.

Needless to say, no network bit.

But maybe his people should call Court TV: Aside from his lawsuit versus Van Halen, Roth is battling one of his own. Guitarist Bart Walsh has filed a complaint against the singer, claiming Roth breached a verbal agreement made in June 2001 by refusing to pay him a $1,500 weekly allowance.

    Fuqua Helming Bruckheimer's King Arthur
    Sunday, December 15, 2002 11:43 CST

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Training Day director Antoine Fuqua is lined up to bring one of history's most legendary figures to the big screen as he is set to helm the Jerry Bruckheimer-produced King Arthur. A spring start date is being eyed.

The project, described as a demystified take on the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, is said to be based on a more realistic portrayal of "Arthur" than has ever been presented onscreen.

The trade says the film will focus on the history and politics of the period during which Arthur ruled -- when the Roman empire collapsed and skirmishes over power broke out in outlying countries -- as opposed to the mystical elements of the tale on which past Arthur films have focused.

Schwarzenegger & Cedric Take a Chance
    Sunday, December 15, 2002 11:41 CST

Arnold Schwarzenegger and Cedric the Entertainer are in early talks to star in Intermedia Films' Joe's Last Chance for director Andrew Bergman and Outlaw Productions, says The Hollywood Reporter. A tentative spring start date is being eyed for the project.

"Last Chance" centers on a dedicated hit man (Schwarzenegger) who travels to a tropical paradise to terminate his "mark," to be played by Cedric the Entertainer. However, when the mark inadvertently saves the hit man's life, the hit man gives him a stay of execution and uses the opportunity to take a long-overdue vacation, sparking an unexpected friendship with the man he is supposed to kill.

Bergman, who came aboard the project in July, rewrote the script, which Intermedia picked up as a spec from first-time screenwriter Dwayne Smith two years ago.

Steven Spielberg Talks Indiana Jones 4!
    Monday, December 16, 2002 7:54 CST

Cindy Pearlman talked to director Steven Spielberg who says that Indiana Jones 4 will indeed feature all of Jones' former babes in various cameo roles.

"I'd like to get Karen Allen back for one soundbite, and there are other Indy girls who had smaller roles who will come back," he says.

What about his own wife, Kate Capshaw, who starred in the second film of the series? "Maybe or maybe not," Spielberg adds. "Frank Darabont, who is writing the script, called me and said, 'I'm not sure we can work her into the script, too.' "

Spielberg says that fan-favorite Sean Connery will be back as well, "Sean Connery as Indy's pop will be back for a few scenes, and it's set in the early '50s."

SUM 41 Offered IRON MAIDEN World Tour - Dec. 16, 2002

Pop punkers SUM 41 have been offered the opening slot on the upcoming IRON MAIDEN world tour.

"IRON MAIDEN have contacted us and they want us on their world tour next year," SUM 41 bassist Cone "Jay" McCaslin told Sweden's Close-Up magazine. "It turns out that they're big SUM 41 fans."

"We fell off our chairs," McCaslin said of the group's reaction to the surprise invitation. "We're pretty much all booked [through the end of next year], but we have to do at least part of the tour. The audience will probably throw beer and shit on us, but we don't care."

SUM 41 have made no bones about their appreciation for all things metal and have gone as far to invite SLAYER guitarist Kerry King to guest in a video for "What We're All About", a remixed version of the track that originally appeared on the group's "Half Hour Of Power" CD. Earlier this month, SUM 41 asked reunited Bay Area thrashers EXODUS to join them on the bill at San Francisco's Bottom of the Hill, where the two bands performed in front of a sold-out, 350-capacity crowd.

The Allman Brothers Band are putting the finishing touches on a new studio album, which, if it hits a projected March release date, will be its first in almost nine years. The record will also be the Allman's first with a reconfigured lineup that now includes guitar whiz Derek Trucks instead of original Brother Dickey Betts.
"We're all real proud of it," says guitarist Warren Haynes, a "new" Brother with more than twelve years of service. "The vibe of making the record -- writing the material and putting it together -- was the best that its been in a really long time. Everybody's excited and it feels like it's the best Allman Brothers Band record in many, many years."

Haynes co-produced the album with Michael Barbiero (a longtime collaborator with Haynes' other band, Gov't Mule), whose resume also includes production and mixing duty on albums by Guns n' Roses, Metallica, Cypress Hill and Blues Traveler. The album, for which the group is still trying to find a title, will include covers of the Rolling Stones' "Heart of Stone" and Freddie King's "Woman Across the River." Also on the set will be "Rocking Horse," a song Haynes co-wrote with Gregg Allman and originally recorded on Gov't Mule's 1995 self-titled debut. Also dusted off was "Mydelle," which Haynes co-wrote with ex-Allmans keyboardist Johnny Neel for the band's 1990 album, Seven Turns. "Desdemona," "All Before My Time," Firing Line" and "High Cost of Low Living" are also among the new songs that might be familiar to those who have caught the band in concert recently.

Though the album represents the first studio fruits from the Allmans in nearly a decade, the band has hardly been dormant. The Allmans released a pair of live albums, An Evening With the Allman Brothers Band: First Set in 1992 and Second Set in 1995. In 2000, the band issued Peakin' at the Beacon, a document of its 2000 residence at New York City's Beacon Theater. The group also recently launched a series of vintage live recordings with American University 12-13-70 on their Allman Brothers Band Recording Company label. The album is available at Allman shows and through mail order.

As for the new album, the band is hoping the release will coincide with its 2003 Beacon Theater run. The Beacon dates, like last year, will be abbreviated compared to some of the month-long stretches in years past. But the group will still set up shop March 13-15, 17-18 and 20-22. Tickets for the shows went on sale last week.

After thirty years of service, Betts got his ouster from the band in May 2000 for reasons specified as "creative differences." In addition to Allman, Haynes and Trucks, the current lineup includes original percussionists Butch Trucks and Jaimoe. The band suffered a more tragic loss months after Betts' dismissal when bassist Allen Woody, also a Gov't Mule member who joined the Allmans around the same time as Haynes, died of heart failure.

Haynes and Gov't Mule have recorded two albums since Woody's death, The Deep End, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, which featured new songs with guest bassists including Flea, Larry Graham and John Entwistle, as a tribute to Woody. According to Haynes, the Mule plans to play a few more tour dates with rotating bassists before moving forward. "As long as we're promoting the Deep End series, then we'll continue to utilize the other bass players," Haynes says. "I'm proud of the way it turned out. It's not a tribute in the normal sense of the word, because it's all new material. But it definitely honors Allen Woody. But once that's run its course, which will be sometime next year, it'll be time for us to decide and announce who the new bass player is going to be. When we do the next official project, it'll be with the new bass player."

In addition to Haynes' fourteenth annual Christmas Jam -- a December 21st event featuring Bob Weir, Robert Randolph and others to benefit Habitat for Humanity -- Gov't Mule have set up a pair of New York City gigs, December 30th and 31st at the Beacon Theater. In Deep End tradition, Tony Levin (Peter Gabriel), George Porter Jr. (the Meters), Andy Hess and others will divide the four-string duties.

"It's been a busy couple of years," Haynes says. "Between Gov't Mule, Phil Lesh and Friends and the Allman Brothers Band, it's meant a lot of time on the road. But they're good years nonetheless, aside from the obvious tragedies. It's amazing how life works that way. Something like losing your best friend can turn you towards a lot of great things. And you just don't question it."

On February 18th, Epic/Sony will begin the AC/DC reissue frenzy. The first phase includes the following: Back In Black, Highway To Hell, For Those About To Rock (We Salute You), Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, High Voltage and the single and double-CD versions of Live. Each CD will include Sony's proprietary ConnecteD technology, which allows fans who purchase the disc to unlock exclusive content (live performances, photos etc.,...) on a special web site created specifically for each release. The titles will also feature restored album art, as well as enhanced packaging including additional rare and historic photos, new liner notes, and comprehensive track information. AC/DC's move to Sony Music Entertainment reunites the band with two executives who played a major role in their early success. Epic Records Chairman David R. Glew, who helped guide AC/DC's career during his tenure as Executive Vice President/General Manager of Atlantic Records, and Epic's Executive Vice President and General Manager, Steve Barnett, who previously served as the band's manager. In the U.S., AC/DC has earned the 5th highest ranking in terms of album certifications, according to the RIAA. The band's 1980 release, Back In Black, has sold an impressive 41 million copies worldwide, making it the 6th highest-selling album in history. AC/DC will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March of 2003.

Pierce Brosnan is Here to Stay as 007
    Monday, December 16, 2002 11:14 CST

Die Another Day producer Barbara Broccoli told the Associated Press that with the success of his fourth James Bond film, Pierce Brosnan's lock on the 007 franchise seems secure. Broccoli has a standard comeback when asked who might fill Brosnan's shoes in the future.

"It's like asking a bride as she's going up the aisle who her next husband is going to be," Broccoli said. "I mean, he is James Bond. He's our guy. And until he's no longer James Bond, we ain't looking anywhere."

Brosnan previously played the British spy in GoldenEye (1995), Tomorrow Never Dies (1997) and The World is Not Enough (1999).

Broccoli said she believes the popularity of the Austin Powers spy spoof film series has boosted the staying power of the 40-year-old James Bond franchise.

"They tend to, I think, reflect the early Bond, the first sort of three or four. I don't think they spoof the current ones so much," she said. "They're so popular, Austin Powers, I think it just helps people enjoy going to the movies and this sort of genre."
