Well folks, I'll start with the moral of the story:

Use a surge protector on EVERYTHING.

Sunday night we went to print a document. However, after the printer took two swipes, the document stopped printing, and the printer software locked up.

We had a power outage Friday night, and we were thinking that the printer had been fried, so we went to get another printer.

I get home from school, and the printer's there, ready to go. So I go to install the thing. I notice it takes five minutes short of forever to get the installer software running. Then it throws me these bullshit ports to install to, and nothing works. My system locks up intermittently, and I'm freaking out.

It gets worse. Continued attempts to launch the software fail, doing absolutely nothing. Things are real slow, etc. At this point we were going berserk, because this was the most powerful computer in the house, and a lack of power would really really suck.

I tried to reboot only to find the system wouldn't come up. Hitting Ctrl-Alt-Del a couple times and a tap of the F8 key got me to Safe mode, where the system STILL refused to boot!

Time for drastic action. I restarted and then restored a backup of the registry, and things seemed to be working fine after that.

So we try the printer again. Oops, it crashes again!

Turns out that in addition to our printer, the port also fried. So, we go out and get a new computer.

However, the other system still works except for the printer, so now this one is in my room, waiting for my every command.

But even a USB printer fails to function, so we're going to have to take some other drastic actions that I don't feel like taking. I'm tired, I've got lots of stuff coming up...you know the drill.

We got new surge protectors & stuff to ensure this doesn't happen again.

Remember the moral of the story...

Always use a surge protector.

(Or something worded differently. )

I missed the Links (and the upgrade, DAMMIT)...but all should be well now.

An addendum to this...
Use a surge protector with a phone jack!

I fried a computer several years ago when a lightning strike traveled up the phone line into my internal modem, totally frying everything!

I can't believe we did, either, but it was going to happen sooner or later.

It was just much sooner than we thought.

That's how my dad is. If one thing doesn't work, screw fixing it; just replace the whole smash.

Our neighbor dropped in today with a very thorough diagnostic program and tested the whole smash.

It showed that there were NO PROBLEMS with the parallel port. WTF?

We tried installing the printer on that port and got the same results: Nothing.

I doubt it's a virus, but I'm going to grab the latest definitions and make sure, cuz it did say that the write protection on our ROM was removed.

But I really am not sure.

I don't know how it got there though.

I've detected no trojan activity, and I don't install software from anywhere I don't trust.
