Iron Man & Wonder Woman Updates!
Wednesday, December 5, 2001 1:59 CST

Coming Soon! has learned from a reliable source that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon is now officially on board to direct the comic book adaptation of "Iron Man". The project is set up at New Line Cinema for a possible 2004 release date.

Last we heard was that if Whedon was to take on the film he would also be starting fresh on the screenplay.

The "Iron Man" story features billionaire genius Tony Stark who was gravely injured by an act of industrial sabotage. He saved his own life by designing a life-sustaining shell -- the hi-tech armor that is the invincible Iron Man.

Our source also tells us that last Friday Warner Bros. greenlit the "Wonder Woman" movie adaptation. No word yet on any talent attached to that project.

France Completes Punisher Script
Wednesday, December 5, 2001 8:06 CST

Comics2Film reports that screenwriter Michael France has turned in a script for "The Punisher" movie adaptation. France previously wrote drafts of scripts for "The Hulk" and "Fantastic Four," as well as the James Bond installment "Goldeneye".

"I wrote a couple of drafts of The Punisher for Artisan and Marvel earlier this year. They liked what I did with it -- which basically was to create a new back story for Frank Castle, while putting in some elements of the Garth Ennis miniseries," France told the site.

France adds that the skull from the comics is in the film. "I figured out how to work the skull shirt in without it seeming too silly."

Artisan Entertainment is currently taking the script out to directors and actors.

Spielberg Directing Abraham Lincoln Biopic
Thursday, December 6, 2001 6:29 CST

"Gladiator" co-writer John Logan has made a deal to write two high profile DreamWorks projects that likely will be directed by two of the studio's chiefs, says Variety.

Logan will write a biopic of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln for DreamWorks partner Steven Spielberg to direct, and he also will script an untitled WWII project to be directed by studio production head Walter Parkes.

Spielberg's Lincoln project focuses on how the 16th U.S. president steered the country through the Civil War.

Parkes plans to make his fiction directing debut on the Logan-scripted untitled true story of a team of Allied commandos who fought the Germans on the Greek island of Symi during World War II. Under siege, the commandos sought refuge in a monastery of Eastern Orthodox monks. These unlikely allies help the soldiers overcome long odds in a picture that will be mounted in the spirit of "The Guns of Navarone" and "Bridge on the River Kwai."

Diaz Near Charlie's Angels 2 Deal
Wednesday, December 5, 2001 1:13 CST

Variety reports that Cameron Diaz is near a deal to reprise her role in Columbia Pictures' sequel to "Charlie's Angels," with a pact that could eventually bring her $20 million -- making her only the second actress, after Julia Roberts, to hit that salary benchmark.

She has also had signed to again provide the voice of the princess in the "Shrek" sequel. Diaz is to be paid $10 million for about a week's worth of time to lay down her lines. That's the same salary being earned by Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy for the film.

Diaz becomes the second of the heavenly trio to commit to the sequel to Col hit "Angels," which grossed $125 million domestically. Drew Barrymore, who with Flower Films partner Nancy Juvonen produced the original with Leonard Goldberg, is set to return in both capacities.

"Charlie's Angels 2," which has a script by John August, is set for a summer 2002 start date under McG, who helmed the original. Lucy Liu is said to be in negotiations for an encore as well.

Nicolas Cage Set to Direct Sonny
Thursday, December 6, 2001 6:33 CST

Variety reports that Nicolas Cage will make his directorial debut on "Sonny," a John Carlen-scripted drama being produced by Cage and his Saturn Pictures partner Norm Golightly.

The film shares the dark tones prevalent in "Leaving Las Vegas," and he's looking for a twentysomething guy to star as a male hustler who joined the Army to escape the gigolo life. He's discharged and stops home in New Orleans with the intention of getting a legit job. In his way is his mother, a flesh-peddling matriarch who wants him back in the family business.

Saturn, which produced "Shadow of the Vampire" and the Alan Parker-directed Kevin Spacey starrer "The Life of David Gale," will do the picture only if Cage and Golightly can lock cast and financing for the under-$5 million pic to shoot in January. The actor needs to finish in time to star next year in the Tarsem-directed WB pic "Constantine."

Arnold Receiving $30M T3 Payday!
Tuesday, December 4, 2001 9:21 CST

According to Variety, Arnold Schwarzenegger will have a guaranteed payday of $30 million for "Terminator 3". The project is Intermedia-financed and production begins in April. And for succeeding James Cameron as director, Jonathan Mostow will be paid upward of $5 million.

The salary isn't an issue for studios bidding for domestic rights, as they aren't privy to the budgetary breakdown. All they have seen is the script, and an asking price of $50 million against 50% of gross receipts in exchange for domestic theatrical, TV, VHS and DVD rights.

Bidders were told the film could cost $180 million, but that it is hoped that it would be closer to $165 million, adds the trade. It's believed that Paramount, Disney, Universal and possibly DreamWorks were players, but it was unclear whether any had yet reached Intermedia's asking price. The only studio clearly out of the bidding is Fox, which has an acrimonious history with Kassar and Vajna in trying to get "T3" for its franchise director Cameron.

The "T3" storyline takes place 10 years beyond "T2," with a twentysomething John Conner and his cyborg pal battling a female TX model, a Terminatrix whose powers and morphing abilities go beyond anything seen before.

Farrell Playing Bullseye in Daredevil!
Thursday, December 6, 2001 7:09 CST

Colin Farrell ("Tigerland") will star as master marksman Bullseye in the 20th Century Fox adaptation of the "Daredevil" comics. Bullseye is the nemesis of the blind lawyer and martial artist played by Ben Affleck.

Budgeted at around $50 million, the 20th Century Fox picture is scheduled to shoot next year with Mark Steven Johnson ("Simon Birch") directing, says Variety. Stan Lee will serve as an executive producer.

Farrell, who recently appeared in Warner Bros.' "American Outlaws," has four pictures scheduled to bow next year: MGM's "Hart's War," Disney's "The Farm" and Fox's "Phone Booth" and "Minority Report."

Fan Halen...

I think you're gonna become of friend of mine REAL quick!!

Thanks for those kick-ass updates!

Initial thoughts:
1. Will Hollywood bastardize the "Iron Man" film or will they do it justice and bring Stark out in the traditional red & gold?
2. I'd heard Joanie Laurer (aka Chyna) was at one time specualted to land a role in "Wonder Woman"
3. I'll be interested to see what they do with the NEW Fantastic Four script and cast. Did anyone see the "straight to video" debaucle that came out about 10 years ago? I didn't but I read in "Wizard" that it was HORRIBLE!
4. My interest continues in what they'll do with the Hulk. I'm not too sure HOW they can make it true to comic fashion without using a lot of CGI but we'll see how it turns out...
5. "Daredevil" COULD be a very cool, dark movie!
6. Any news on Cage donning the big red "S" for the Superman flicks?
7. Thanks a million for the still of Spidey and the GG!

Again, welcome aboard FH!!
