    NEWS - Pearl Jam's Agenda For 2002
    01/05/2002

(1/5/02, 7 a.m. ET) -- Pearl Jam is heading into the studio in February to work on its next album, which will be its final release under the band's current contract with Epic Records. It remains to be seen if the band will renegotiate its deal with Epic or become a free agent.

Pearl Jam is considering touring in support of the forthcoming effort, but won't make a final decision until the album is complete.

Also planned for 2002 is the still-untitled postponed rarities album, a new album by guitarist Stone Gossard's side-band Brad, and Eddie Vedder's contributions to the forthcoming Ramones tribute album and to the soundtrack to I Am Sam. On the latter, which is due on Tuesday (January 8), Vedder covers the Beatles' "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away." He plays all the instruments on the track.

The LA Times: Slash Persona Non Grata at GUNS N' ROSES Concert - Jan. 5, 2002

The following item originally appeared in the daily newspaper The Los Angeles Times: “Former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Slash's plan to check out his estranged bandmate Axl Rose on stage last weekend was scrapped by Rose's representatives, who informed him that he wouldn't be allowed into the Las Vegas concert hall. Slash, who officially left GNR in 1996 and has remained alienated from the temperamental Rose, had arranged through a friend to attend Saturday's show at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, where Rose was playing with his new GUNS N' ROSES lineup for only the second time. That didn't seem like a good idea to Rose's manager, Doug Goldstein. 'We didn't know what his intentions were,' Goldstein told The Times this week. 'If nothing else, it would have been a distraction. Axl was really nervous about these shows. We decided on our own not to take any risk.' Goldstein sent an assistant to discuss the issue with Slash, who agreed to cancel his reservation. Slash told The Times on Thursday that four hotel security guards accompanied the representative to his room and made it clear that he wouldn't be admitted to the show. 'They said no way. I knew things were being blown way out of proportion. It was like being grabbed by my hair and being ripped back into the days of when I was in GUNS N' ROSES.... I was going to see the show just like anybody else, and to be supportive, for what that's worth. I spent the last six years trying to stay out of the nastiness that does go on. If Axl had heard I was there and sent somebody down to go, 'You want to come up and jam on 'Paradise City' or 'Welcome to the Jungle'?' I would have done it.'”

The following quotes from Slash were taken from MTV.com:

"I've never actually seen GUNS N' ROSES from that perspective, and I was curious. And I wanted to go in a supportive capacity as well. ... I was trying to be discreet about it, but apparently GUNS N' ROSES' management found out and it was major pandemonium. It was like they sent out an all-points bulletin."

"Really, I just wanted to go to the show, not cause a scene. If I had wanted to cause a scene," Slash said, "I could have called the head of security on my cell phone and said I was in the middle of the venue and to come and get me, just to f.ck with him. I even thought about doing that, but that's just my mischievous side. It shouldn't have been a big deal. And if, even after all this time, if Axl had wanted to do a song, any number of our old GNR songs, it would have been way cool."

In related news, it appears that the “new” GUNS N' ROSES had re-recorded the GNR classic “Welcome To The Jungle” for inclusion in the upcoming movie Black Hawk Down (in theatres January 18th), but that it was eventually excluded from the movie and the accompanying soundtrack due to legal issues stemming from the fact that old band members (and in particular Slash) would have had to sign off on it, which is something that vocalist Axl Rose has implied the axeman wasn't willing to do. The revamped band have also reportedly recorded four new versions of the BOB DYLAN classic and GNR live staple “Knockin' On Heavens Door”, including a reggae version, an "eclectic" rendition, and the version they played in concert at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, which is said to be “a much more slowed down version” than the one that appears on Use Your Illusion II.

ANTHRAX: “Behind The Music” Lies A Very Ugly Mess Indeed! - Jan. 5, 2002

A minor controversy has erupted over the upcoming VH1 Behind The Music special on ANTHRAX, the interviews and background information for which are currently being collected and prepared for a tentative February/March air date. It appears that former ANTHRAX bassist and founding member Danny Lilker is being “blown off” (to use his own words) by the current members of the group, and in particular guitarist Scott Ian (who, along with ANTHRAX drummer Charlie Benante, is in a long-running side project called S.O.D. [STORMTROOPERS OF DEATH] with Danny), to the extent that ANTHRAX are allegedly intent on rewriting the band's history and taking credit for coming up with the group's name when it was in fact Lilker who reportedly came up with the name “anthrax” in high school and shared it with the rest of his then-bandmates. Based on postings by Lilker, his wife Heather Lilker and S.O.D. frontman Billy Milano on the Relapse Records and Metal Maniacs message boards, ANTHRAX have intentionally left Danny's name off the list of potential interviewees for the upcoming special (despite Ian's claims to the contrary), and are one again “find[ing] it useful to leave the Lilker side of their history out of sight,” according to Milano.

Without further ado, here are some of the public comments that have been made on the subject by Lilker, his wife Heather and Milano that are presently fuelling this controversy:

DAN LILKER [on the Relapse Records message board, where he posts under the name “balth”]:
”Yes, it's f.cked that I'm getting blown off. Yes, I am still obligated to do another S.O.D. release, which I will do, 'cos let's face it, [the rest of the band would] be f.cked without me and it would be nice to put away some $ for rent for the next year. I think that at the end of the day, Scott [Ian]'s one of those people who does whatever is necessary to get ahead, and those people get theirs in the end. So f.ck it.”

BILLY MILANO [on the Metal Maniacs message board, where he posts under the name “Buzzard”]:
“I'm in a band with [ANTHRAX drummer] Charlie [Benante] and Scott [Ian]—both of whom have told me to my face Lilker thought of the name [ANTHRAX]. And they got rid of Lilker because hey was too tall. Again, they said that to my face. No one could tell Scott and Charlie to do anything without them agreeing on it. They are just too cowardly to take the heat. I should know—I've been on the road driving for ANTHRAX and sing[ing] for S.O.D. for 17 years now. They are the most unoriginal, boring people you will ever meet. They stole everything they could to forward their career. Believe me, THEY ARE SCUMBAGS. And I tell them to their faces, which is why they are afraid of being around me. PUNKS!@

“My point about this [topic] is simple: [ANTHRAX] are scumbags and once more find it useful to leave the Lilker side of their history out of sight. Anyone who knows me , knows that I am a royal ball-buster when it comes to Lilker. I always bust his balls—especially about his smoking. But the guy deserves the credit—respect and acknowledgement. ANTHRAX are f.cking assholes.”

HEATHER LILKER [Danny Lilker's wife, on the Relapse Records message board, where she posts under the name “HellQueen”]:
“Dan has still not heard from Scott. When I posted about this originally weeks ago. Dan e-mailed him again last night. I figure this — like Scott is going around the press taking claim for coming up with the name ANTHRAX (when Dan really came up with the name in high school). He also wants to take total claim on forming the band. But that is just my opinion.

“I talked last night with a friend who is a promoter in Buffalo. She said that when they did the GOO GOO DOLLS BTM the list of people they gave VH1 — VH1 contacted every person on that list — VH1 wants to get the WHOLE story. Scott says that he gave his list to VH1 and Danny's name was on it. So now I think that is total bullsh.t by Scott. Again he wants to take total [credit for coming up with the name and] forming ANTHRAX. Scott also has said that they have done 6 hours of interviews - including great ANTHRAX personalities like [former ANTHRAX guitarist] Paul Crook and Charlie's Mom. But they couldn't interview a founding member? Bullsh.t again. Also Scott claims that this is [VH1's] show and he has no control over who gets interviewed. Well, duh, doesn't he work for the f.cking network [hosting the Rock Show]! I think he has control, but he is not letting on and trying to play Dan for a fool.

“This is an absolute insult to Dan. If Dan doesn't hear from Scott — Scott said last weeks ago that VH1 were doing more interviews around January 7th. And since Dan hasn't heard from Scott or VH1 (That is why Dan sent him a reminder e mail last night.), then I will try and get a hold of the producer myself and find out whether Scott really did give in Danny's name. Then I will go to the trouble of continuing my troll on ANTHRAX's [message board] and let the public know Danny has been shut out by Scott. And yes... Dan is just as upset as I am.

“Scott is just being greedy. If anybody knows Dan they know Dan will not hurt even a fly. Dan has not one mean bone in his body. He has done absolutely nothing to Scott except not selling out and following the path of his buddies in $$$$$lica [METALLICA] and all the bands Dan has ever done after ANTHRAX have had much success... NUCLEAR ASSAULT, EXIT 13, BRUTAL TRUTH, etc. If it wasn't for Dan still [being] in S.O.D. —S.O.D. would not have any metal credibility anymore considering how much ANTHRAX have sucked in the past 13 years. Yes, S.O.D. are due to fulfill another record obligation with Nuclear Blast [Records]. Who knows when that will take place considering all the 'ANTHRAX Business' going on.”

    Jennifer Garner Elektra in Daredevil!?
    Sunday, January 6, 2002 12:01 CST

Following up on Marvel Studios' Avi Arad's comments on E! News Daily last Thursday, AICN reports that casting has indeed taken place for the role of Elektra in the "Daredevil" comic book adaptation starring Ben Affleck in the lead role!

Arad on the show said they had cast the role but did not mention any names. The site says it has learned that the one and only Jennifer Garner from ABC's Alias (Sunday nights) has landed the part. AICN says that their source has been very reliable in the past.

'I Was Curious,' Slash Says Of GN'R Show He Was Banned From

    By Jennifer Vineyard
    01/04/2002

Las Vegas wasn't paradise city for Slash when he tried to check out Guns N' Roses at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino late last month. It seems the band's former guitarist wasn't welcome to the jungle.

Slash, who quit the group in 1996 and later formed Slash's Snakepit, said he was in Vegas on vacation when he learned that GN'R would be playing there in two weeks' time, on New Year's Eve and two days before (see "Guns N' Roses Ante Up For Another New Year's Eve In Vegas"). He said he made some calls and got on the guest list for the December 29 show via the venue and the promoter.

"I've never actually seen Guns N' Roses from that perspective," he said, "and I was curious. And I wanted to go in a supportive capacity as well. ... I was trying to be discreet about it, but apparently Guns N' Roses' management found out and it was major pandemonium. It was like they sent out an all-points bulletin."

Slash said a representative from the band's management company, along with hotel security officers, came to his room and told him to stay away from the show, "to spare me the embarrassment of being turned away at the door."

He said he tried to assure them that he had no ill intentions, but to no avail. The prevailing concern, they relayed, was that his attendance might "freak Axl [Rose] out," and he was told that no former members of the band would be admitted. Slash offered to enter the show late and leave early, sitting in the back where he wouldn't be noticed, he said, but they refused.

"I even found a security guard who said he would sneak me in, but the promoter found out about that and nixed that. Basically, if they found me inside, they said, someone would get fired."

At that point he realized it was pointless to try to attend the show, he said, so he gave up and to went to another casino for the night. The evening wasn't a total loss, though — Slash ran into GN'R crew members who were old friends and partied with them after the show, he said.

"Really, I just wanted to go to the show, not cause a scene. If I had wanted to cause a scene," Slash said, "I could have called the head of security on my cell phone and said I was in the middle of the venue and to come and get me, just to f--- with him. I even thought about doing that, but that's just my mischievous side. It shouldn't have been a big deal. And if, even after all this time, if Axl had wanted to do a song, any number of our old GN'R songs, it would have been way cool."

A hotel spokesperson, who noted that Slash did not have a ticket to the sold-out show, said the venue had no record of any security personnel having any interaction with the guitarist and therefore she could not confirm nor deny Slash's account. "If a patron has a ticket or credentials, then we allow admittance," she said. "If they do not have a ticket or credentials, then we don't allow admittance."

Guns N’ Roses’ manager, Doug Goldstein, did not return calls for comment, but he told the Los Angeles Times: "We didn’t know what his intentions were. If nothing else, it would have been a distraction. Axl was really nervous about these shows. We decided on our own not to take any risk."

    Mangold Directing Johnny Cash Biopic
    Monday, January 7, 2002 5:15 CST

According to columnist Cindy Pearlman, director James Mangold ("Kate and Leopold," "Cop Land") will direct a big-screen epic based on Johnny Cash's life after years of delays.

"Johnny was a witness to, and essential part of, the birth of rock and roll," says Mangold.

The only woe is finding someone to fit those black three-quarter-length jackets. "We need an actor who can start at age 20 and play Johnny to age 38." Mangold says he is mulling over just about every name in town. "We might have to go with an unknown," he adds.

It's just been too damn long since we got a decent "killer shark" movie. But it sounds as if that may change.

Author Steve Alten recently stated that his giant-shark story "Meg" may soon be on its way to becoming a major motion picture. Alten offers the encouraging news on his site that an unnamed production company is interested in the ocean predator, using Steve's own screenplay.

"Meg" tells the tale of a 60-foot prehistoric great white that makes life difficult for an oceanographer, as well as pretty much anyone else who dares to venture into the water.

Tom Clancy Talks The Sum of All Fears
    Friday, January 4, 2002 9:57 CST

Moviehole landed a great interview with novelist Tom Clancy and sent us a taste of what was discussed. Check it out...

The latest Clancy adaptation, The Sum of all Fears, is almost upon us and yesterday I had the opportunity to interview author Tom Clancy about it, the long-awaited take on Without Remorse and the film adaptations in general.

    Here's the SUM/WITHOUT stuff :

This year, young Ben Affleck will be taking over the reigns portraying a much younger Ryan in the long-awaited "The Sum of all Fears" "So far Baldwin did the best job, but I am hopeful for Ben Affleck", Clancy says. "I think He's a great kid and I am most impressed with him". Additionally, Clancy tells me he hasn't agreed with "quite a few" of the decisions the film makers came to when casting the supporting parts either.

Internet sources speculated that the previously mentioned "Sum of all Fears" has been delayed/chopped/postponed due to the events of September 11th, but Clancy is sticking to his guns, adamant that there's been no delay or change. "There was no delay. You were misinformed", he informs. "There never was any delay on 'Sum." It's right on schedule as far as I can tell".

And what does Clancy think of the latest incarnation of one of his books? "I haven't seen it yet" he replies. Of the screenplay he comments "I have noticed many changes though between Sum the movie and Sum the book" he adds. "I'm impressed with Affleck though. From what I've seen", Clancy reveals.

One of the non-Jack Ryan movies Clancy wrote was "Without Remorse". In the eventual film, A tireless jingoist, Mr Clark, will defend truth, justice, and the American way against the North Vietnamese -- who've been real mean to our boys just 'cause we dumped a couple million tons of bombs, munitions, and chemicals on 'em; as well as against inner-city blacks -- who choose not to get jobs and live the American Dream, but deal drugs instead. Sources have suggested that everyone from Gary Sinise to Matt Damon was hot on the author's wish list to take on the lead role of , but it couldn't be farther from the truth.

"I'd like Tom Selleck", Clancy announces. Needless to say, Clancy doesn't have the pull to cast who he'd like in these roles so slotting Selleck into the role might come with it's speed bumps. "If Tom Selleck were still in his 30s, I'd pick him." he says. But as the film makers have told him there is "No chance on Tom. He's too old now. Pity", he says. "Tom's a pal, and a princely gentleman". Regardless, the project's not moving too fast. Any word? "No, not yet", he says before informing me that before we see the adventures of Mr.Clark on screen, we'll "probably" be treated to another Jack Ryan adventure.

SILVERCHAIR To Issue "The Greatest View" On January 28th - Jan. 6, 2002

SILVERCHAIR's new single, "The Greatest View", will hit Australian and New Zealand record stores on Monday, January 28th. The single will feature two extra songs—"Pins In My Needles" and "Too Much Of Not Enough"—both of which (like “The Greatest View&#8221 were written and co-produced by Daniel Johns and produced by David Bottrill (i.e. TOOL, PETER GABRIEL). "Pins In My Needles" will not be included on the band's forthcoming album Diorama, while "Too Much Of Not Enough" will probably end up on the final CD, although this has yet to be confirmed. In other news, a video for "The Greatest View" will debut on Australian and New Zealand TV in mid-January. It was produced and directed by a young Brisbane based video team called Squareyed Films, who had previously worked with acclaimed Aussie indie act GEORGE. SILVERCHAIR are currently in the studio working on a new song for possible inclusion on Diorama, after which they will embark on the Big Day Out festival tour.

    Ratner Talks RED DRAGON
Director reveals plans for upcoming remake.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Monday, January 7, 2002

    By: FRANK KURTZ
    By: News Editor
    Source: Fred Topol/About.com Action-Adeventure Movies

Helmer Brett Ratner has been talking quite a bit about what we can expect from the coming RED DRAGON remake.

While talking to Fred Topol of About.com's Action-Adevnture Movies page, Ratner spoke of the original film version of the book directed by Michael Mann as MANHUNTER compared to his own upcoming version, saying, "MANHUNTER was cool when it came out, but my script is written by Ted Tally, who won the Academy Award for writing SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. He didn't write MANHUNTER or HANNIBAL. [This] is really inspired by the book and it's way closer to the book than MANHUNTER. MANHUNTER was kind of inspired by RED DRAGON the book. RED DRAGON the movie is literally an interpretation of the book. MANHUNTER, I think they even changed the name because it wasn't close to what the book was. It had the same characters' names and was inspired by but much different. I mean, my movie starts with the capture of Hannibal Lecter and it has scenes in it like where Dolarhyde goes to the Brooklyn Museum of Art and eats the drawing of the red dragon. And it ends more like the book. The end of MANHUNTER had nothing to do with the book at all.

Topol noted that in the original book, the capture of Lecter is told only in flashback. On this point, Ratner says, "It's told in flashbacks in the [RED DRAGON] book. In my movie, it's told chronologically. I mean, you knew they capture Hannibal but you didn't really see it, so we chose to go by the book and show the events that happened preceding Jack Crawford going to ask him to come and catch the Tooth Fairy."

Regarding how Anthony Hopkins will be made to look younger, the helmer reveals, "He's on a workout regimen. He's lost 20 pounds. He's back to the weight that he was when he did SILENCE OF THE LAMBS."

Regarding rumors that Hopkins will be made younger with the aid of computer effects, Ratner says, "That's a possibility but it's mostly done with lighting."

    Banderas Loses Phantom Role?
    Monday, January 7, 2002 8:48 CST

WENN reports that Antonio Banderas has lost his role in the film version of "Phantom Of The Opera". According to the trade, Banderas was keen to work with the 'Phantom's' creator Andrew Lloyd Webber, but has now been side-lined due to his recent string of box-office flops.

While musical genius Lloyd-Webber is a massive fan of Banderas, he believes he needs a more bankable movie star to play the tragic anti-hero portrayed by British actor Michael Crawford on stage.

Last March an eager Banderas was enthusing about the role. He gushed, "I know Phantom like I wrote it - not just Phantom but practically everything that Andrew wrote. Two weeks ago, Andrew called me. He was very excited on the phone and said: 'Antonio, we got it. We've got the script that we want to have. And I wrote the new music I wanted to write.'"

The trade goes on to say that John Travolta is now said to be keen to take the part, but a spokeswoman for the composer says, "No casting decisions have been made at all."

Nic Cage Starring in Cronenberg's Painkillers
    Monday, January 7, 2002 10:20 CST

Allocine.com has learned that Nicolas Cage will play a lead role in David Cronenberg's next feature film, "Painkillers." It will be based on French artist Orlan's treatise on "L'Art charnel". She will play her own role in the movie.

Interviewed by the French daily newspaper France-Soir on Monday, January 7, Orlan revealed the existence of this ambitious project. "David Cronenberg wrote a movie called Painkillers, based on my treatise on "L'Art charnel" and the fight against pain," she said. "I will be playing my own role and I also know that Nicolas Cage will be part of the cast. As for when shooting will begin, I will know more about that during this year's Cannes Film Festival, where I will be presenting my work to the public."

Orlan is famous for her special approach to art, as she uses her own body for artistic purposes. She has had no less than nine plastic surgery operations and has exhibited digital photos and sculptures of her own body. It therefore comes to no surprise that her unique art has crossed the path of Cronenberg. The human body has always been a recurring theme in the latter's movies, from "The Fly" to "eXistenZ" to "Crash". "Painkillers" should be further proof of that fascination.

NEWS - Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor To Produce Limp Bizkit?
    01/07/2002

(1/7/02, 1 p.m. ET) - Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor may be considering producing some songs for the next album by Limp Bizkit. According to an interview in the German magazine Visions, Bizkit's Fred Durst contacted Trent Reznor's management to ask if he would be open to producing a few tracks. Neither a spokesperson for Reznor nor a spokesperson for Durst were available to confirm the report at press time. Reznor and Durst working together would be surprising, considering their high-profile war in the press a few years back. However, Reznor has in fact given Limp Bizkit permission to copy his lyrics to use in a song, so a reconciliation may be under way.

Reznor recently told LAUNCH he had not wanted to attack Durst's band in the first place. "I made no bones in the press about my displeasure with Limp Bizkit, and I've kind of rethought that," he said. "I mean, one time I was getting barbed in an interview by somebody, prompted to say bad things [about Limp Bizkit], and I said, 'Look, I said what I have to say. I don't need to be the bitter guy pointing the finger at the successful band with zero integrity...I really don't want to do it.'"

The feud started in Rolling Stone in October 1999. Reznor said, "I like the challenges of flirting with the mainstream. I think we can do it honestly. Let Fred Durst surf a piece of plywood up my ass." In another magazine a few months later, Durst responded by saying: "Trent Reznor is obviously unhappy with how he's alienated the world, how long he took to make a record, and how he thought he was immortal. We're just here doing what we do and we have nothing to say about anybody. I wish them both luck and I feel sorry that they're so jealous and mad at themselves that they have to talk sh-t."

Nine Inch Nails is set to release its live album and DVD, Nine Inch Nails Live: And All That Could Have Been on January 22.

NEWS - U2 Already Working On New Music
    01/07/2002

(1/7/02, 12 p.m. ET) - If the members of U2 have their way, they might have more new music for consideration when the Grammy Awards of 2002 roll around. The Irish quartet is hard at work in Dublin on two projects: its next studio album and contributions for the soundtrack to the upcoming Martin Scorsese film Gangs Of New York, according to Ireland's Hot Press magazine.

U2 frontman Bono told the magazine that the group felt it was important to start working on new music immediately after wrapping up its Elevation world tour in support of its Grammy-nominated All That You Can't Leave Behind. "The band is so tight, coming straight off the tour. We've hit form," Bono says.

One of the new U2 tracks is reportedly called "Electrical Storm," but it's unknown whether or not it will be used for the album or for the Scorsese film, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Cameron Diaz, and Daniel Day-Lewis, and is slated to open in July.

U2, meanwhile, will do the halftime show at the Super Bowl in New Orleans on February 3, and it is considering an invitation to perform at the Winter Olympics next month in Salt Lake City.
