The Lone Ranger Riding at Columbia
    Wednesday, March 6, 2002 1:07 CST

Columbia Pictures has picked up the feature film rights to the classic property "The Lone Ranger" for Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher to produce through their studio-based Red Wagon Entertainment. A screenwriter is expected shortly to come aboard the project, says The Hollywood Reporter.

The film will chronicle the adventures of a masked man known as the Lone Ranger, his horse Silver and trusty companion Tonto. It is expected to stay within the classic Western genre but will incorporate a new interpretation.

4-Minute Two Towers Preview Moved to Mar. 29
    Tuesday, March 5, 2002 8:32 CST

Hollywood.com spoke to New Line's David Tuckerman who says "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" will "be in the low $290 millions before we get to Oscar weekend. Just hype alone should get us to $300 million. We're going back in the marketplace on Mar. 22 and then on Mar. 29--we've just revised our plan--we're going to add (something special at the conclusion of the film).

"Peter Jackson has made a four minute preview--not a trailer--of (the next film in the Rings trilogy) 'The Two Towers' (opening this December). He basically did it as a thank you to the fans. So we're going to switch out the last reel for Friday, Mar. 29. On Mar. 22 we're going to do a big push to get back into the theaters. I hope to get back to (around) 2,000. So we'll get ourselves through that weekend. If we win, that's great. If we don't win, we have a thank you for the fans on Mar. 29 (that will continue to play) until it leaves theaters."

It was previously reported that the preview would be added on March 22nd. We'll see you back in line on the 29th.
".....and Harry Potter and all of his wizard-friends went to Hell for practicing Witchcraft. The End." -Ned Flander's version of reading "Harry Potter" to Rod and Todd.

Mike Myers Set for Cat in the Hat
    Tuesday, March 5, 2002 11:31 CST

Entertainment Weekly talked to producer Brian Grazer ("How the Grinch Stole Christmas") about the big-screen live-action upcoming Dr. Seuss adaptation.

"The blend of his irreverence works very well with the Seussian child sensibilities," says Grazer, adding that Seuss' widow, Audrey Geisel, approves of Myers' casting. "Having Mike puts the story on steroids."

No director has been named for the film, which Grazer hopes to begin shooting this fall for release in summer 2003. Replacing Tim Allen, Myers will undergo prosthetic transformations from makeup guru Rick Baker.

But unlike Jim Carrey's "The Grinch," the "Cat" isn't kids' stuff. "I think of him like Bluto, the character [John] Belushi played in 'Animal House,'" Grazer says. "He took the characters on a ride more intense than anyone expected, and that's what the Cat does."
".....and Harry Potter and all of his wizard-friends went to Hell for practicing Witchcraft. The End." -Ned Flander's version of reading "Harry Potter" to Rod and Todd.

Former ALICE IN CHAINS Axeman Taps COMES WITH THE FALL Talent For Upcoming Gig - Mar. 6, 2002

Former ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell will perform at the South By Southwest music and media conference at Stubb's BBQ in Austin, Texas on Saturday, March 16th with the help of a backing group that will consist of COMES WITH THE FALL members William Duvall (guitar/vocals), Adam Stanger (bass), and Bevan Davies (drums), plus a guitarist named Shawn from a Texan ALICE IN CHAINS cover band.

COMES WITH THE FALL are no strangers to the Jerry Cantrell camp, having previously backed the guitarist during his spring/summer of 2001 club tour, in addition to having assisted Cantrell during his first post-hiatus shows in the San Francisco area in January 2001.

Originally based in Atlanta, COMES WITH THE FALL relocated to Los Angeles two years ago and have two full-length albums under their belts, 2000's self-titled debut and last year's The Year Is One, both of which were issued through the group's own DVL Records.

In a recent interview with www.thedarkarchives.com, Duvall explained how the trio first hooked up with the former ALICE IN CHAINS axeman.

“Jerry heard our first album soon after we arrived in LA and really flipped on it,” William recalled. “He came up out of the blue and introduced himself to me at the Dragonfly one night. He said that our record and THE REFUSED album The Shape Of Punk To Come were the two best things he heard all year. This was an honor to us because we are very big fans of Jerry's work and we absolutely loved that REFUSED album as well. Our friendship grew from there. He would jump onstage with us every time we played a gig in L.A. He even moved into our apartment building. He lived downstairs and would come up and jam with us every day. He started asking me to teach him how to play his favorite songs from our first album. Then I'd ask him to show me something off Dirt. It was real cool, a beautiful time. It was such strong validation for us after feeling so misunderstood and ignored back in Atlanta. I'll never forget it.”

In addition to backing Jerry Cantrell at his South By Southwest appearance, COMES WITH THE FALL will perform a set in the support slot at the same gig.

For more information on COMES WITH THE FALL, visit the band's official web site at www.comeswiththefall.com.

FILTER Finalize Album Track Listing, Speak Out On New Guitarist - Mar. 6, 2002

FILTER have released the revised tentative track listing for their upcoming The Amalgamut CD, which is due to be released in July through Reprise Records. It is as follows (in no particular order):

    01. You Walk Away
    02. The American Cliche
    03. My Long Walk to Jail
    04. Where Do We Go From Here
    05. So I Quit
    06. The Only Way is The Wrong Way
    07. The Missing
    08. Columind
    09. It Can Never Be The Same
    10. God Damn Me
    11. Reservation
    12. The Fourth

Guitarist Geno Lenardo recently commented on the addition of touring guitarist Al Beiley to the group's line-up. This is what he had to say:

“Rich and I had discussed the idea of adding a second guitarist for the live shows in the past, and we thought the addition would help to enhance the density and thickness of the sound. So a few months back, we started looking around for players, which is when Alan entered the picture. He was a college roommate of mine, and we've been friends ever since, so when he heard about the spot, he started showing up at the studio for rehearsals. Alan's a great guy and is a smoking guitar player. He's also very well versed in styles like blues, jazz, rock and all sorts of stuff, and he has a lot of skill and discipline. He really wants to play the role of rhythm guitar in FILTER to help cement the sound live and we're all really excited to have him on board!”

A full length MP3 of the “punk rock song” "So I Quit" will be made available for download via FILTER's official web site at www.officialfilter.com in a couple of weeks. The album's first single is due to go for radio adds in June.

Carlos Santana's follow-up to the hugely successful Supernatural will again feature an abundance of guest musicians, but that's about all the legendary guitarist will divulge.

"I can't tell you who or it won't be a surprise," Santana said at Clive Davis' Grammy Eve party (Click here for photos.) . He did reveal, however, that none of the collaborators on his last album — which included Matchbox Twenty's Rob Thomas, Everlast and Dave Matthews, among others — have contributed to the still-untitled new album, which is about 80 percent complete. "But they might come around," he added.

Davis, who first signed Santana three decades ago and orchestrated his comeback at the turn of the century, is working with the guitarist and his namesake band on their upcoming recording, which Santana called "more vital" than Supernatural.

"It has rhythm and melody and a lot of colors and is more vibrant than the other one," Santana said. "It's just more fun."

Following up an album that won nine Grammys (see "Carlos Santana and J. Lo's Dress Reign Supreme: Grammy Flashback 2000") and scored several hits (most notably "Smooth" and "Maria Maria") might put pressure on some artists, but not Santana.

"I make it a point to clear the table and play the guitar like I have never played it before," he said. "I strip my mind from that stuff. It's just fun to have another opportunity."

A year ago, Santana announced he wanted to "dismantle violence" with his follow-up to Supernatural (see "Santana Hopes To Release Supernatural Follow-Up In Fall"). Of course, after September 11, he has felt an even stronger need to make peaceful music.

"There's a saying for women that when the water breaks, the baby's got to come out," Santana said. "And the water broke [on September 11], and all of us get to usher in a new baby. It's called unity and harmony. That's the new baby, and all of us get to nurture it.

"I'm really happy I am living in this time," he added. "We get to enter a place where flags and politics and religion is not going to be important anymore. We can't go back, we have to go forward. Even though it was tragic and people gave their lives, it is the beginning of a whole new world living in harmony and unity."

Santana will launch a nine-date American tour in Tampa, Florida, on March 21. A European tour will follow and head into midsummer, when Santana hopes to release his album and return to the States for a more complete tour.

Santana tour dates, according to his spokesperson:

    3/21 - Tampa, FL @ Ice Palace

3/22 - West Palm Beach, FL @ Mars Music Amphitheater

3/23 - Orlando, FL @ TD Waterhouse Centre

    3/25 - Atlanta, GA - Philips Arena

    3/27 - Greenville, SC @ Bi-Lo Center

    3/29 - Raleigh, NC @ Entertainment & Sports Arena

    3/30 - Charlotte, NC @ Charlotte Coliseum

    4/1 - Washington, DC @ MCI Center

4/2- Hampton, VA @ Hampton Coliseum

METALLICA's Collaboration With JA RULE Delayed Until June! - Mar. 6, 2002

METALLICA's collaboration with rapper JA RULE and producer Swizz Beatz in the form of a track called "We Did It Again" will not be available to the public until June 11th, according to hip hop news site Y2HIPHOP (as reported by Encyclopedia Metallica). The release date of the Swizz Beatz compilation album Ghetto Stories Volume 1, featuring the aforementioned track, was originally scheduled to be issued through Dreamworks Records on May 14th, but has now apparently been pushed back for reasons that were not disclosed.

As previously reported, the METALLICA track will reportedly be the only rock cut on the album, which will also include contributions from Ronald Isley and Shyne, among others. "We Did It Again" will feature JA RULE rapping over two 12-bar verses accompanied by the group's trademark crunch, while rest of the song is instrumental and does not include contributions from vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield (who was in rehab when the track was laid down last August).

    PHOENIX rises again
Action-adventure coming back from John Moore

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Dateline: Wednesday, March 6, 2002

    By: CHRISTOPHER ALLAN SMITH
    By: News Editor
    Source: Hollywood Reporters

John Moore, the director of the modest hit BEHIND ENEMY LINES, has signed on to remake the 1965 disaster/action-adventure THE FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX.

The film, the original of which starred James Stewart, Richard Attenborough, George Kennedy and Ernest Borgnine, centered on a World War II bomber which crashes in the Sahara. When the crew realizes they’re not going to be rescued, they have to build a plane after the wreck and fly to safety.

Scott Frank has already written a draft, which according to Twentieth Century Fox is a modern retelling of the story, now centered in the Mongolian desert.

Brazilian THRASH OF THE TITANS: Final Line-Up Announced! - Mar. 6, 2002

Brazil's much-anticipated Thrash Of The Titans festival, which is scheduled to take place on April 20th at Estacionamento do Anhembi, São Paulo, Brazil, is a benefit event that will raise funds for Brazilian hospitals for the treatment of cancer diseases. The following bands are confirmed to appear at the event:

    ANTHRAX
    TESTAMENT
    MACHINE HEAD
    DEATH ANGEL
    EXODUS (feat. Steve “Zetro” Souza)
FLOTSAM AND JETSAM (feat. Eric A.K.)
    HEATHEN
    VIO-LENCE
    SADUS
    KORZUS
    AKASHIC
    NECROMANCIA
    DOYKOD
EMINENCE (feat. ex-SEPULTURA guitarist Jairo Guedz on bass)
    CHIPSET ZERO

The festival is being organized by Options Concerts, and the promoters need a minimum attendance of 15,000 people to pay all the costs. All revenue generated in excess of these costs is going to be given to the Brazilian Cancer Hospital. If the attendance is lower than the break-even figure (15,000), the organization will cover all the debts and it will be given 10% of the raised funds.

The festival is scheduled to start at 12:00 noon of Saturday, April 20th at the Anhembi Parking Lot, and will take place on two different stages, so as to allow there to be no breaks between the bands' performances. The festival is expected to run until approximately 2:00 AM Sunday morning.

The original Thrash of the Titans festival sold out the Maritime Hall in San Francisco on August 11th, in the process raising funds for the cancer/tumor treatments of TESTAMENT singer Chuck Billy and late DEATH mainman Chuck Schuldiner.
