i vote LIBERTARIAN, and i think there position is not accept federal funds and just use private money. i have a simple solution, get rid of "issue ads" and use term limits. i was watching tv the other day and they said that senators fund raise on monday and friday. if you want to clean up politics vote for better people.

Dude I agree. Ban all soft money in every form. Term limits is also a must for Congress. We need to get rid of jack-asses like all the Kennedys and Jesse Helms off the payroll.

Term limits really don't excite me much. There's a huge downside to them. Experience is something that is not to be undervalued. Let's not forget that people can vote incumbents out of office, and do when something better comes along.

When you look at the tens of millions that are spent on Senate seats, it bogles the mind. What was it that the guy from NJ spent last year? Something like $80 million? That's ridiculous. When it gets to the point that you have to be a multi-millionare to run in an election, something has to change.

We have a moron in the White House because he's the one who could raise the most money.

Do we need campaign finance reform??

Another reason why John Mc Cain was much more qualified AND why his own party won't support him.

    JON CORZINE spent 39 million.
the REPUBLICANS spent 245 million and the DEMOCRATS spent 244 million on soft money. incumbents won something like 90% of the time. BILL CLINTON and other presidents had fund raisers in the WHITE HOUSE. i don't understand why there would be a limit on presidents and not on congress. money buys influence. i would be in favor of campaign limits like a 1,000 per person or company.

Term limits would push bright, capable, and experienced people out of office. They'd be replaces by bright, capable, inexperienced people. It'd play havoc with commitees, and move a lot of knowledge on the process of governing out of Capitol Hill. I think things would be less efficient than they already are.

Can you imagine a having a large percentage of the House being unaccountable to their constituents? There'd be no need for them to actively represent their districts if they knew they couldn't run again.

Incumbents win much of the time. They win because the people of their districts support them, as well as their party supporting them more strongly as time passes by. The longer they've been in, the more seniority they have for commitee positions. That's where all the action happens.

If campaign finance reform is done smartly, they'll make it so that incumbents can't receive huge amounts of money in comparison to their opponents. That'll remove any of the reasons for term limits. There won't be any need for legislation that will limit the will of the voters.

How about a term limit of,say, 10 years for Congressmen. This way we get rid of the 15,20,30, 95(Mr. S. Thurman) year individuals and we don't have to worry about losing experience. Just a thought. We need to do something about those yucks up there.

How many of them have served more than 10 years in the House? I know in the Senate serving 10 years is relatively little, but I don't know the real numbers. I can't see passing legistlation that only effect a few members of Congress.

To a degree I think it's dangerous to put more limitations on who people can elect to office. I really believe that if a person isn't representing their constituents, they'll be voted out.

I think campaign finance reform would impose natural term limits, while those imposed by legislation would be artificial. Does that make sense?

The only problem with campaign finance reform, is that it runs right into the First Amendment as unconstitutional limits on speech...I'll keep the First and ditch c.f.r.

As for John McCain...I lost all respect for the man when he sat silently on the sidelines as the Gore campaign tried to disqualify military ballots...some war hero...

I think term limits should be exercised by the voters...vote the sumbitch out if you don't like 'em...Which WAS the intent of the Founders...just like a PART TIME LEGISLATURE was the intent of the Founders...

If more Americans voted...oh well...I think we have had over 70% turnout in a federal election once in our history...

As much as I agree with Van Gully most of the time, this one I'd side with MikeL on the term limits.

Does it bother me that there are living fossils like Ted Kennedy and Strom Thurmond? Hell, yes it does!

But what's really needed are informed voters at the polls, not knuckleheads who can't follow instructions or don't bother to educate themselves/vote cause others like Jesse tell 'em how to vote/scare 'em into voting by saying the govt doesn't want to hold your hand anymore by giving free handouts/etc.

I'm sure you're opposed to Ted Kennedy's politics, but he's hardly a pre-cambrian species like Strom Thurmond.
