I haven't read or heard anything about this yet. For those of you that didn't catch the Simpsons last night here is what you need to know. Homer falls on the church grounds and is pursuaded to sue the church. The jury awards him a-billion-kajillion dollars or whatever. Reverand Lovejoy responds, "...we're not a synogogue". Is this a harmless joke or the perpetuation of a jewish stereotype? With all of the knee-jerk reactionism these days I'm surprised it isn't being talked about. What do you guys think?

harmless joke. Just like it was a harmless joke about Homer getting what he wanted from prayer. Or Homer playing KISS music in the "church" once he took over. You know, the whole Knights In Satan's Service.

I wouldn't consider it rascist because that show has always taken these shots at everything and everybody. Just off the top of my head, I recall an episode where they were introducing the judges at some type of pageant and the narrator introduced one (might have been the boxer Drederick Tatum or however it's spelled) as the "token black judge".

    They've made fun of everyone!

but yeah, totally a joke. they poke fun at everything. the show is based on a satirical examination of the world and american culture. it's not so much that he mentioned that they weren't a synagogue, but that there are people like homer (although not the extreme) out there in the world who couldn't give two shits about anything. man, i could teach a course on the brilliance of the simpsons... Exactly. Man they took the piss outta Australians more than a few times. Once they had our Prime minister floating in a waterhole on a tyre tube drinking beer. If only it were true LOL! :rolemodel:

You are right Laner... it IS a brilliant cartoon. There is so much stuff that can get overlooked, but if you really pay attention, you'll catch most of it. Matt Groenig (sp) makes many very subtle points about many issues. One of my faves is when guns were banned and the Aliens decided to attack. Lenny defends himself with a board that has a nail in it. He even makes a remark about it (I don't remember exactly), that makes the point that even without guns, people will still create ways of hurting others.

dammit...why do i keep forgetting to watch the Simpsons on Sunday nights?!?!?!?

ah well, next week we got the 300th episode!
Gozer the Traveller will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii the Traveller came as a very large and moving Torb. Then of course in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants they chose a new form for him, that of a Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.

Totally harmless nowadays. People come to expect satire from the show. But during the first couple of years it was on, that as a different story. Different groups would single out The Simpsons as being a bad influence on society and take offense at certain parodies, and among them were Jewish groups. According to a Simpsons' article in the latest TV Guide, "several Jewish groups protested Like Father, Like Clown (October 24, 1991), the "Jazz Singer"-like episode, in which Krusty reveals that his real name is Krustofski and that he is estranged from his rabbi father (Jackie Mason)."

That's one thing I love about The Simpsons...they're an "equal opportunity offender".

well, i don't even think it's offensive. they've taken their crack at canada plenty of times too, but it's all in the name of humor. in my opinion, south park is the most offensive cartoon on tv. but yeah, that's a whole other can of worms.
