North Americans don't care half as much about The World Cup as the people from Brazil do.

Most people in Canada and the U.S.A. will be watching the Lewis vs. Tyson fight on the weekend instead of the World Cup.

You know, Uncle Ted, I wondered why there was no World Cup thread here in Non-Music.

Yankee's right, though. North Americans look at soccer the way lots of Americans view hockey; we're not too interested. LOL That would change if a North American team (especially the US squad) got far into the tournament. The US team has been so bad for so long, most Americans say "What's the point in rooting for the team? What's the point in getting up at 2:25 AM for a game being played in Korea?"

I did catch US/Portugal and Ireland/Germany. Fantastic games! What I've seen I've liked. The time zone difference must be what's killing a lot of the enthusiasm.

BTW - Screw France! <--- Someone had to say it. Might as well be me.

I've watched a little of it. Watched bout half the Argie/England game last night. It's actually in a GOOD time zone for me.

We're kinda used to the idea of having to put in 'all nighters' to watch sports events. Ususally the cricket in england, or wimbleton tennis causes a lot of red eyed workers here.

I remember the cricket world cup in '99. I was forever grateful the Pakis decided to shit themselves. Game was over by 1am. Normally it woulda been a 4 or 5 am finish. :yikes:

Soccer is OK in my books. I'm not a fanatic but I'll watch here and there. It was great seeing the U.S win especially after their poor showing in 1998. Hopefully they can have a good run and open a few more eyes in North America for the sport. My parents are Croatian so I'm keeping an eye on how the Croatian team does. They finished 3rd in 1998. I'd also like to see England to well. They had a nice win today against Argentina. I bet Posh Spice had something sweet for David Becham after the game.

Yeah, that's what they said about the metric system, too, and I actually liked that! Nah, they've been forcing soccer on us for 25 years now and haven't really made too much inroads. Still, they do have one weapon - the dreaded soccer mom - "Hey, little Johnny could get hurt playing football or baseball - that soccer looks pretty safe, I'll sign 'em up for that!" All these little kids that should be in Little League playing soccer instead - outrageous! My own child, even - and he's good at it. Likes it 'cause it's easy - what kind of reason is that for liking to play a sport? Of course, if U.S. wins this "World Cup" thingy, and the baseball players and owners decide to shut down the game of baseball again, they could take over then - at least until football season starts...

Another thing, I don't have anything against SOCCER either. (Don't call it football - when the Brits call a variation of baseball criquet - well, you know they just don't know how to name sports.) My son played soccer for two years and has had to sit out the past year due to a knee injury. But there's not enough action in soccer.
My son was always getting the red or yellow card or whatever the hell it was for being "too aggressive." What the hell is that? Going for the ball, keeping it from the other team, and scoring is the name of the game, right? It was a co-ed leaque and he didn't have any problem putting a girl on her ass - just another player to him.

Yeh, although because of the time difference its on a monday here, starts 9-10 am, so its a bit hard to watch it. It is broadcast though.

I used to follow the NFL quite a bit, but they changed the coverage here and I lost interest.

Soccer or NFL arent very big here though. SOccer has a bit of intrest amongst the immigrant population though. We already have 3 other football codes at each others throat for the punters dollar (Aussie rules, rugby league and rugby iunion) theres not a lot of room for anything else.

BTW Baseball and Cricket are pretty different LOL

Its union actually - not iunion LOL. My typo :duh:

NFL is actually a dervative of Rugby Union, I read a heap of stuff about how they evolved the union packs out into the NFL 'line' of players, and introduced forward passing, stopping between plays etc. it was quite interesting.it all happened round the 1900's I think.
