Doing some traveling over Thanksgiving and forgetting my VH Rising book forced me to buy a new book at the airport.

    The 5th Wave

It's set in the midst of an alien invasion and I'm about halfway through so far. Think: The Hunger Games meets War of the Worlds. The protagonists are all young teens or kids, so I'm guessing this is meant for young adults, but it's a decent read anyway.

While the book starts off with a post apocalyptic narrative where we explore how the characters got to where they are, it's turned into a Full Metal Jacket type narrative as the book progresses to the middle. There's a lot of things in the book that don't make sense at the moment, so I'm trying to figure out whether there's going to be something great that ties it all in at the end or if it's just really poor writing. I'm really hoping it's the former. I have a feeling the ending is going to make or break this book.

The bad thing about this book is that I realized after I purchased it that it's the first in a series of 3 books. Boooooooo. I hate having to buy more books just to find out what happens to the characters of the overall story.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Currently rereading the entire series of original James Bond novels by Ian Fleming. Almost finished with Diamonds Are Forever. Next up is my favorite book in the series(and movie also), From Russia With Love.

Also trying to decide which military/political/history book to read next. I have a couple books on Patton I want to get to, a bunch on Hitler and WWII in general, books on Reagan, Lincoln, Washington, or maybe American Sniper. So many to choose from...

Just finished "Carlisle vs Army". Book focusing on, mainly, Carlisle vs Army game of 1912. Jim Thorpe and the Carlisle Indians against Dwight Eisenhower and the cadets of West Point. May be the best sport book I've read but much more than sports here. Founding of Carlisle, Thorpe's life, 1912 Olympics. Much on Ike's young life. I knew the outcome of the game, read some on Thorpe already but found myself pulling for Carlisle all the way. Just an awesome read IMO.

Have been reading Lee Child novels, the "Jack Reacher" author, and after four, I might be done. Good character, but the stories and generic stereotype's (Italian mafia dumbasses, Southern racists, etc.) have caused me to lose interest.

I finally got around to reading some Bukowski. Started with Ham on Rye and then Post Office. Not sure if I am in a hurry to move on to the next one. Could definitely relate to taking a good beer shit.

Currently re-reading Neil Peart's Ghost Rider. Read it years ago but since I motorcycle more these days his description of riding resonate with me now more than ever.

Dug up my old copy of On The Beach by Neville Shute. Post apocalyptic novel written in the 50s concerning a wave of radiation making its way around the world and how each person deals with impending death. Reminds me of our current situation now. Some great characters in this and was even made a movie of starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire and Anthony Perkins.

Probably not the lightest reading material, but I'm finally getting around to finishing Michelle McNamara's "Ill be Gone in the Dark ( Patton Oswald's late wife) It's the story of her obsessive search for the killer she dubbed The GOlden State Killer

Now that we know what we know about the guy who was caught using DNA, after this book was written, it is chilling to think that just like the BTK killer, someone could be a mass murderer like this and just stop, and then go decades living amongst us

I've got a lot of murdery mystery things lined up but I.m thinking I'm going to need something of a mild diversion so I'm looking thru my stacks and trying to find something without much success Lincoln in the Bardo? ..supernatural kind of life death thing based on the true story of President Lincoln returning to his young sons crypt to hold his body. nope too grim Anne Hillermans books where she picks up the Chee/ Leaphorn mysteries from her father Tony Hillerman. murders... I realized so many of my books are murder mysteries

I can't even watch 20/20 or Dateline on Friday anymore because every episode seems to be the source material for a Lifetime women in danger movie or a Law and Order Episode

    I need funny books

    I love Bukowski!

Wasn't there a line in Post Office, where he relates:

Most people wake up in the morning, and comb their hair.
I Wake up in the morning, and want to comb my face.
