I am considering purchasing a notebook for my son. Do you Linkers have any comments? I have started to do alittle research on my own. I figured it would be great to get your thoughts.

All comments will be taken under advisement!

Just leave my mother out of it!

How old is he? Apple's iBooks are great for students, as they're very, very tough. Durability is an issue if he's not going to carry it around in a laptop bag. Notebooks often wear out physically before they become obsolete, so that's something to consider.

Hey, was that because of the fact that it's really for dad? Either way, what Mike said is the truth. Durability of laptops and notebooks is a major issue, at least to me. If you're getting one to take places, carry it as though it were a carton of eggs. If it's staying at home, get a desktop instead. Much more bang for the buck. If desk space is an issue (I'm starting to hate my bulky 17" monitor), get an LCD monitor. Just an opinion from someone who used to fix data equipment for a living.

Can anyone recommend a flat profile LCD monitor?

No sir it is "really" for him. It is staying at home and desk space is an issue.

Not to sound rude or nosy, but what would a 7-year-old need a laptop for?

I have a Toshiba Portege that I use for work that is very durable. Can't go wrong with a Sony Vaio either.

He plays CD/DVD games, he has used and will be using a computer in school next month. He would use my computer less . You'd be surprised how good he is with the computer, he can handle it for the most part by himself!

I'd pick up an iBook with a DVD drive. With a little shopping, you could set one up with wireless access. Got a CompUSA or Apple Store near you? If you do, it's worth checking an iBook out before you buy. I wouldn't buy it from either of those, but you'd get some hands on time to evaluate the computer.

My bet is that if you get a setup like that, your son will be using your computer, and you'll be sitting on the couch or the deck with his. I'm out in the hammock at the moment.

Hmmm...so why get a laptop if you're not planning to run around with it? You'll get less bang for your buck.

But Lead Synth is right - even though the disparity in price and features is very slowly diminishing, you're getting less machine for the same amount of money as a desktop with an LCD monitor. I'm talking hundreds in savings. I also wouldn't recommend a child using a computer anywhere but a desk, either. Anyway, good luck to you and your son.

If he's going to play games that have any kind of advances graphics, you should be prepared to spend BIG bucks to get a laptop that can handle them. As others have said, you can get small desktops with a good LCD monitor for less cash, and they really don't take up that much space.

If you are still set on a laptop, I would look into getting something factory refurbished. You can get a decent unit for a fair price.
