Well, I just got off an Instant Message with JWS5150. We are all VERY fortunate to have a computer wiz Halen fan around these parts. JWS even has credentials in doing this kind of thing in an on line environment. You could pay 40 to 60 bucks an hour for this stuff, but, because you dig Van Halen......

If you have a problem with your set up, bugs, crashes etc.. Post your problem here and JWS will give it a look see.

Try to be as specific as possible in describing your problem up front.

This is on a first come, first serve basis. Just like a call center here, your order will be processed in the order in which it was recieved.

I'd be willing to bet that this will be a good thread to have hanging around here after a while. Just review the pages, maybe your problem has already been taken care of back in the history somewhere.

Just post, and I'll get to 'em when I can.

Bear in mind I don't have ALL the answers, but I dig up what I can, and I have plenty of places to check. Chances are you'll be just fine.

Techie's gotta rest sometime.

I'll try to get to some questions tomorrow, but I'll be busy. Time usually weasels its way in though.

I'll go first... Can you think of any reason it would take me 9-10 hours to scan disc (thorough)

I finally got a defrag to run through for the firsttime in about 4 mos. It took 10 hours, about. Will it take that long every time I run it? Will I get better results if I use the defrag on Nuts N Bolts98? Or stick with windows defrag. Also, How often should I run my maintenance wizard?

Angel, I have been told that Nuts N Bolts 98 has a better scandisk. It detected an error on my hard drive, that my windows scandisk never noticed.

I have another question, but I'll save it for later.

Did you defrag in safe mode? Somewhere in another thread....there are directions on how to do that.....

The scandisc detected the errors and fixed them but it took forever
Audio galaxy I believe can take the blame for the errors

Yeah, safe mode is the only way it wuld work. I kept getting a "drive contents changed, restarting" everytime I ran it, for months. I used the other thread to run it in safe. But did it take that long because it has been so long since it was done completely, or will it take that long all the time?
Also, how often should I run the maintenance wizard?

Because there are so many programs loaded when your system is started in Normal mode, ScanDisk would likely restart the scan a number of times, dragging out your scan time.

You'll want to start in Safe mode - when you turn on your computer, your system probably runs through a few very fast tests. Keep hitting F8 until you see a startup menu. With Windows 98 and Windows Me, it's very easy to miss this startup menu, as the window to get it is two seconds, tops. Just keep tapping F8, and you should see it, but if you see the Windows logo screen, you've missed it.

What you're looking for when you do get the startup menu is "Safe mode" - use the arrow key to go down to that choice, and hit Enter.

Run Scandisk from within Safe Mode, and it should be a lot faster.

Nuts and Bolts has a better disk scanner and a better defragger than Windows provides. They're often a lot faster than what Microsoft provides.

As for the Maintenance Wizard, the real catch with that is that it doesn't support third-party apps. You'll want to use Task Scheduler (the Scheduled Tasks folder in My Computer under Windows 98 or Scheduled Tasks folder under Control Panel in Windows Me) and create a new task by clicking 'Add Scheduled Task'. You then can go through the wizard it provides and select the program you wish (the Nuts & Bolts software in this case), select a time for it, and you'll be off and running.

And defrag speed has a number of variables. It takes forever when you defrag for the first time in a long time, but the programs loaded also interfere.

Safe mode is your best bet there.

Thanx for the help. One last question. I have a couple of dead icons on my desktop. It won't let me drag and drop to recycle bin, and they're not listed on my Add/Remove Programs. How can I get rid of them?
