I took a look at that new Motley Crue book today and the cover price is $42.50. Being in Canada I have to add 7% tax, but even without that, that price is crazy.

Here's a band that doesn't sell a lot of records anymore, and they don't sell the kind of concert tickets they used to, and the book is $42.50?

Now I'm sure the band doesn't set the price, but what's the logic behind selling hardcover books for such a high price? Are hardcover books just put out in smaller numbers, and then the real money is made when a book is brought out in paperback?

Anybody familiar with the book industry about this?

good question and I have no idea, but I'd imagine that it would be the opposite. Hardcover I'd think would be the most pricey because that means its new, more in demand and more able to sell regardless of price and centered to the more hardcore market that is willing to pay the price right now rather than wait for the cheaper alternative. Not doubting the money making potential of paperback by any means, in fact its probably more profitable, but it appears they are looking for two peeks in the market. Flames could probably add a couple cents to this discussion, I'm just guessing.

Yeah, but this is Motley Crue, not Tolstoy.

I can just see it now, "And perched upon his bookshelf is the crowning glory of his collection, a first edition of the Motley Crue classic called 'The Dirt'"!

Another question too, how long does it usually take for hardcovers to start appearing in the $5 knock off racks?

Not trying to turn this into a music discussion, but I just found an interview on the net from the guy who wrote this book with the band. Here are some interesting quotes on when the book goes into paperback. Stuff like this annoys me (like director's cuts of movies) because it's just taking advantage of fans, making them buy something twice.

quote:
but then again there’s always the paperback and they always want extra chapters, so… I mean there are a couple (of chapters) that I cut out that I might try and put back in.

quote:
I kind of felt like the book was slowing down at that period and I wanted to move it forward so I kept that chapter out with the intention of putting it, maybe into one extra chapter for the paperback… putting it back in then.

quote:
Yeh the book’s hardcover now, then I guess eventually… I don’t know how long it takes, maybe a year or two… it’ll be soft cover and hopefully then we’ll probably add some good stuff, I don’t know what.

Books are not my favorite thing to read...music is my favorite to read and play. I read most of DLR's autobiography and put it down....he is..well DLR!! I'll definetly pick up Crue's book when it is 5 bucks or given to me. Crue had drug problems, porn videos, Playboy wives, and a few break ups...Nothing I would pay full price to read about..BUT I would definetly get on nude celeb websites to view pics of their girlfriends and wives naked!!! Glenn, it would seem to me that books practice the same pricing processes that any new commodity does.

Upon initial release of an item that will not be instant demand by everyone, the supplier usually sets an unreasonably high price. There will always be some individuals willing to pay it, and while maybe 1,000 copies only sell, they make money hand over fist on it.

Then, as initial demand drops off, they lower the hardcover price to get people that want it hardcover but don't want to pay full price for it. About now the book starts showing up in half price bookstores.

And, after all the demand for that had dried up, the bargain basement discount it and put it in paperback to scrape the last bit of money out of the market.

This, if you had to ask my opinion, is probably the logic they follow.
"Just once I'd like to do the right thing and not get punished for it."
