I just watched the first 2 of these movies, and I think they are fantastic. I havent seen the 3rd one yet, but I hear it's not very good. I have a ? on the 2nd one. Im dumb and I dont get everything in movies if its not laid out there right in front of me. What did Fredo exactly do to Michael to betray him so bad. I know he helped out Hymann Roth, but what did he do for him? I never figured that out. BTW, Deniro Rules!

Fredo was the set-up man when the Corleone home at Lake Tahoe gets shot to pieces in GF2...

Regarding GF3, it is clearly an inferior movie, but has interesting moments. It REALLY suffers from the absence of Robert DuVall as Tom Hagen...Andy Garcia is good as Sonny's hothead son...

Oh, so he wanted to get his brother killed so he could be the new head of the family? Another thing, why did Roth want Michael dead then?

They made Fredo sort of loveable at the end, made it kind of sad when he got killed.

Fredo said he wanted something "for himself." Fredo was too nice to be mixed up in everything, which Don Corleone mentions in GF1.

Fredo's basic kindness makes Michael's act of killing him pretty despicable.

BTW,UW, the Fredo murder is basically the centerpiece of Michael's story in GF3...

What's wierd is at first they make it seem like Fredo unintentionally set up Michael, but then you find out he did it on purpose.

I think the point of all the GF movies is that NOTHING is unintentional...

I don't understand all the flak that GF3 takes. While it IS obviously inferior to the other two GF movies, it is a very GOOD movie in its own right. I think it made a good end to the GF series (and possibly an open end for Garcia to continue the series). It had its good moments, and is very watchable, though not on the level of the other two.

I agree that DeNiro rules as a young Don Corleone.

I think the whole Fredo/Michael saga is the most tragic subplot in the GF series. I also really liked James Caan as Sonny. He was a great character.

I second that...GF3 is nowhere on the level of the first two, but it has great moments and fantastic acting, and it's a good closure for the series.

I think Michael's death at the end was a nice parallel to the Don's death in GF1.

I agree it's a good movie, but its most glaring weakness is the absence of DuVall who is such a stabilizing force in the first two movies...

I'm really enjoying the dvd set that just came out recently. The quality of the transfer made it well worth the wait. The first movie is my fave of all time.

Now I'm anxiously awaiting the Star Wars and Indiana Jones' sets!

I have the Blu-ray set. I also have the VHS Godfather Saga, which is the first two movies edited to show in chronological order, which is the best presentation, I feel.

I have recently listened to the Mario Puzo audiobook of The Godfather on You Tube.

I learned a lot of extra details about the characters.

The sexual descritpions are salaciously NC-17 Rated. I can never watch the Wedding Scene, the opening scene of The Godfather, without thinking of the extra information included in the novel.

You can say, with certainity, regarding Sonny's affair with Lucy, the maid of honor, that he really Fucked Her Right In The Pussy !!!

Even though everyone has seen those movies 8 million times by now. That Godfather saga by AMC etc, is a great way to watch it. Burly! Out.

I've seen all the movies multiple times, listened to The Godfather on audio cassette (which as someone above mentioned goes into a lot more detail regarding the characters particularly Jonnie Fontaine) and have listened to 2 audio books that were released by another author called The Godfather Returns and The Godfathers Revenge. both take place between the actual movies (returns is between parts I and II) and they try to fill in the gaps so to speak. they do a good job in some cases, they build a backstory around Fredo that explains why he did what he did in the 2nd movie (they also make him out to be bisexual which is pretty strange). In Revenge they explain what happens to Tom Hagen and why he wasn't in the 3rd GF movie (when in actuality he was planned to be in the movie but Robert Duvall wanted too much money so they wrote him out of it).

Godfather III was a mess with Pacino overacting and Sophia Copolla and Bridget Fonda not even knowing how to act. I'm pretty sure Fonda just disappears the last half with no explanation. lol!

The build up at the opera for the ending was pretty great cinema, but they really fumbled it all with the shooting on the steps... all very sloppy and cliche. It was like two totally different films wedged together.
