Ramones, Tom Petty, Talking Heads To Join Rock Hall
    12.13.2001 7:52 PM EST

A few punks, a scruffy "Refugee" and the most sex-crazed chef on television are crashing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Punk rock pioneers the Ramones and Talking Heads, Southern rockers Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and soul singer Isaac Hayes will lead the class of 2002 when they are inducted into the rock hall on March 18, organizers announced Thursday (December 13).

Other artists recognized include '60s icons Brenda Lee and Gene Pitney, guitar great Chet Atkins, and Stax Records co-founder Jim Stewart. Atkins, who crafted the sound of country music before moving on to record with Elvis Presley and the Everly Brothers, is a "side-man" inductee, while Stewart is a "non-performer" inductee. Stewart's Stax Records released countless R&B and soul hits throughout the '60s and '70s.

Two members of the class of 2002 succumbed to cancer this year — Ramones singer Joey Ramone in April (see "Punk Pioneer Joey Ramone Dead At 49") and Atkins in June (see "Chet Atkins To Be Memorialized In Nashville").

Artists whose names were on the ballot but were not voted into the hall include first-time contenders the Sex Pistols, Jackson Browne, alt-country maverick Gram Parsons, R&B girl group the Chantels, and doo-wop acts the Dells and the "5" Royales. Past nominees who again did not garner enough votes include AC/DC, Patti Smith and Lynyrd Skynyrd (see "Spirit Of '77: Ramones, Pistols Nominated For Hall Of Fame").

Those set to enter next year will be invited to perform at the 17th annual induction ceremony in New York (although the actual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum is in Cleveland). VH1 will broadcast the event, which traditionally culminates with an all-star jam session, on March 20.

The Ramones, arguably the first punk band, formed in the mid-'70s with all five members adopting the same surname and look. Joey Ramone, Johnny Ramone, Tommy Ramone, Dee Dee Ramone and Marky Ramone played loud, fast rock music that inspired everyone from U2 to Green Day. Among the gems on their nearly two dozen albums are "Blitzkrieg Bop" and "I Wanna Be Sedated."

More experimental than the Ramones but from the same New York scene, Talking Heads mixed punk rock with new wave and helped establish the genre now known as alternative rock. David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison and Tina Weymouth made eccentric music but also scored several hit singles, including "Once in a Lifetime," "And She Was" and "Burning Down the House."

Petty and his Heartbreakers band — Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Ron Blair, Stan Lynch and Howie Epstein — combined psychedelic and new wave influences with Southern rock and recorded numerous hit singles, such as "Breakdown," "Refugee," "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Mary Jane's Last Dance."

Hayes was a songwriter for the likes of Sam & Dave and Carla Thomas before he launched a solo career in the late '60s. Perhaps his biggest contribution to music was recording the blueprint for future blaxploitation film scores with "Shaft." Hayes has since become well known as the voice of Chef on "South Park."

Artists become eligible for the rock hall 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include "the influence and significance of the artist's contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll," according to the hall.

The selection process for the class of 2002 began in the spring when around 60 industry professionals including record executives, lawyers, managers, journalists and musicians convened to brainstorm potential nominees. Their list of names was pared down to 16 nominees.

Aerosmith, Steely Dan, Queen, Michael Jackson, Paul Simon, Solomon Burke, Ritchie Valens, the Flamingos, James Burton and Johnnie Johnson were inducted into the hall earlier this year (see "Aerosmith Thrilled, Steely Dan Unimpressed At Rock Hall Ceremony").

(12/15/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- Everlast, who had one of 1999's biggest hits with "What It's Like," is now fronting an all-star band called Mary Jane's Boyfriends, possibly referring to the slang term for marijuana.

The band features Stephen Perkins of Jane's Addiction, Stephen Carpenter of the Deftones, Mellowman Ace, B-Real, Sen Dog and Bobo of Cypress Hill, Rogelio Lozano of Downset, and Marty O'Brien of Methods Of Mayhem.

Mary Jane's Boyfriends is scheduled to perform at the Viper Room in Los Angeles on Saturday (December 15). The band played a previous show May 29 under the name Los Mariwanos.

    Stephen Norrington Helming League Adaptation
    Sunday, December 16, 2001 10:50 CST

"Blade" Director Stephen Norrington will take on the action-suspenser "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" for 20th Century Fox, reports Variety. Having just released the graphic novel adaptation "From Hell" this year, Fox is once more looking to yet another Alan Moore comicbook from Sony-based producer Don Murphy.

Set in the penultimate year of Queen Victoria's reign, which ended with her death in 1901, "League" is essentially a period piece "X-Men," culling its leading protagonists from the landscape of British popular literature, says the trade.

Mina Harker, of Bram Stoker's "Dracula," leads the motley crew of misfits, who include the Indiana Jones precursor Allan Quartermain, from H. Rider Haggard's books; Captain Nemo, the Indian submariner prince of Jules Verne's "20,000 League Under the Sea"; the infamously bipolar Dr. Henry Jekyll created by Robert Louis Stevenson; and the seldom seen Dr. Hawley Griffin, the transparent rogue of H.G. Wells' "The Invisible Man."

In Moore's "League" all these fictional literary characters are real -- and really needed. All are called upon by her majesty Queen Victoria to help thwart an evil madman who is intent upon -- what else? -- world domination.

The film is understood to be budgeted at close to $80 million. Alan Ayers previously penned a script for the film, but now that has been jettisoned in favor of a new adaptation by James Robinson, best known for his D.C. Comics series, "Starman

    RKO & DreamWorks Remaking Paw
    Sunday, December 16, 2001 10:37 CST

RKO Pictures has pacted with DreamWorks to develop a remake of horror film "The Monkey's Paw," says The Hollywood Reporter. DreamWorks will distribute the project. There is no writer or director attached to the updated version.

Distributed by RKO in 1933, the original film centers on a magical monkey's paw, which grants wishes that have unforeseen consequences. The paw falls into the hands of a mother who uses it to bring back her dead son.

    Terminator 3 Casting Breakdown
    Monday, December 17, 2001 7:58 CST

Dark Horizons reports that Warner Bros. has sent out a casting breakdown for the major roles in "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines". Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg role is probably not included since he's set already.

John Connor: The character is now in his early 20's, a haunted and reluctant hero not trusting that everything has been set right.

Kate: Same age as John, a medical professional of some kind that's warm, physical and smart - one who can hold her own with the guys.

T-X-: Female in her 20's, the new Terminator whose sexy, composed and deadly. Actress requires demonstratable athletic skill. No details as to the character itself or its capabilities.

Brewster: A scientific-background military man in his 40's/50's - a thoughtful, strong leader who has earned the respect of those around him.

Scott: Mid-20s/Early-30s young man with good looks, charm and attempting to make a stable future for him and his fiancee.

Sounds like a whole bunch of announcements will still be made regarding the cast.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers: The New York Times reports that New Line is currently contemplating plans for release of trailers for the second LOTR film. The first film due out on Wednesday does not include any footage or even writing on the screen hinting at the second part, why not? NL head Bob Shaye says "There was some discussion about including some scenes at the end from 'The Two Towers', but at the end of the day we decided that might be a little tacky". The studio is currently considering plans to include the first 'Two Towers' teaser at the end of the first film well into its theatrical run - around about March (at that point all the last reels of the film will be exchanged to include reels with the new trailer). The second, full-length theatrical trailer will debut in August in theatres (quite possibly with "Austin Powers in Goldmember"), online and with the video/DVD versions of the first film.

Jeff Buckley Biopic: WENN reports that Brad Pitt, whose been favourite to play the lead in the upcoming biographical film about the late and highly acclaimed musician Jeff Buckley, has been turned down for the lead - by Buckley's mother Mary Guibert. Pitt is reportedly "desperate" to get this biopic made but Guibert says no film about Buckely will be made: "In the first hour of my meeting with Brad he pulled out the folders. I said, 'If you're going to ask me if you can make a Jeff Buckley film, the answer is no.' I told Brad that if he had a close-up of his face on the screen with Jeff's music coming out of his mouth, then he would be a laughing stock. Everyone who loves Jeff cringes at the idea of Brad putting brown contact lenses over his baby blues and letting his hair grow. I do not want to see myself portrayed, I do not want to see Jeff portrayed, no actor can do it. His death still hurts. If anyone wants to make this film, it will be after I'm gone".

Weezer Continue To Hammer Away At New LP
    12.17.2001 7:53 AM EST

    Weezer
    Photo: Geffen

Six months after returning to store shelves, Weezer are ready to make their follow-up.

The band will soon enter a Hollywood studio to record its fourth album, according to an Interscope Records spokesperson.

The LP's scheduled April 30 release date may seem optimistic, but it's not like the diligent group is starting from scratch. Just two weeks after the release of Weezer, the band's second self-titled effort (known as the Green Album), frontman Rivers Cuomo and company hit a Washington, D.C., recording studio to lay down demos for 12 new songs (see "Weezer Breeze Through 12 Demos For Next LP"), including the instrumental "Burnt Jamb," "Keep Fishin'," "Not in Love," "Take Control" and "Saturday Night."

Weezer had road-tested some of the new material on their summer tour and their most recent trek with Tenacious D and Jimmy Eat World (see "Weezer, Tenacious D, Jimmy Eat World Map Out Midget Tour"), which drew to a close Tuesday in Portland, Maine.

It's not known, however, whether all the new material, which also includes the tentatively titled "Listen Up," "American Gigolo," "High Up Above," "December," "I Can't Tell You," "Happy Grunge" and the creatively spelled "Puerto Vayarta," will appear on the new album.

This is the very reason why i have stated that the DLR era of VH will be the era recognized for induction into the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame.....

It's kool to see the Ramones, Tom Petty, and the Talking Heads going in, I m a fan of all of them. Actually I was listening to Johnny Ramone being interviewed last night on the radio, he said something big Ramones wise was gonna happen, I guess this is it...

You think they'll recognize bands by "eras"? I've often wondered about that myself.

HULK MOVIE ON JUNE 20, 2003
Universal Pictures announced that it is releasing The Hulk live-action movie on June 20, 2003, giving Marvel two major films that summer.

Fox announced last week that X2, the X-Men sequel, will be released on May 2, 2003.

Production on The Hulk is scheduled to start on March 18, 2002 at Universal Studios in Los Angeles.

"The Hulk will be our big tent-pole movie for summer 2003, which will be supported with an unprecedented company-wide marketing effort, and the third weekend in June is the perfect release date for a major event title like this,'' said Nikki Rocco, president Universal Pictures Distribution.

Ang Lee is set to direct the film, from a screenplay by James Schamus. The film's producers are Gale Anne Hurd, Avi Arad, James Schamus and Larry Franco. Marvel Comics founder Stan Lee is the executive producer.

Here's how Universal describes the film:

"Ang Lee's concept for the film will combine all the elements of a blockbuster visual effects-intensive superhero movie with the brooding romance and tragedy of Universal's classic horror films -- for The Hulk is at once a superhero and a monster, a wish fulfillment and a nightmare. Lee and his team have gone back to the moving, early incarnations of the character created in May 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, staying true to the subversive spirit of the early Marvel years, while completely updating and projecting The Hulk into the dangers and aspirations of contemporary times."

Australia's Eric Bana, who next stars in Black Hawk Down stars as Bruce Banner, "whose inner demons transform him into The Hulk in the aftermath of a catastrophic experiment."

According to Universal, Bana will play both the human Banner and -- through visual effects technology provided by Industrial Light and Magic -- the superhuman Hulk.

"I'm absolutely blown away," Bana said through his management. "The Incredible Hulk was one of my all-time favorite TV shows and ever since I saw Ice Storm I've been a huge fan of Ang Lee's. I cannot wait to have the opportunity to be part of his vision for this venerable character of Dr. Bruce Banner."

Jennifer Connelly, who next stars in A Beautiful Mind, portrays Betty Ross, "whose scientific genius unwittingly helps unleash The Hulk, and whose love for Banner finds its impossible resolution in the film's denouement."

    Shyamalan & Gibson Talk Signs
    Tuesday, December 18, 2001 12:28 CST

Director M. Night Shyamalan talked to the USA Today about his upcoming supernatural circle-crop feature, "Signs," starring Mel Gibson.

"Although I think they're hoaxes, crop circles are intriguing and seemed like a nice starting point for a creepy story," says the director.

The story revolves around a farmer/pastor (Mel Gibson) who has lost his faith and wakes up one morning to find a 400-foot crop circle in his Bucks County, Pa., cornfield.

Shyamalan says the discovery of the signs leads to an investigation about where they came from and what they mean. "Mel can handle action and comedy, and still be the guy you believe would protect his family at all costs," he says. "It's a thriller and there are twists, which I won't ruin, but we also throw in some comedy. I want you to laugh before you start screaming."

One thing is certain: The shapes didn't come from a computer. "We actually made them all in the fields. We contracted out to some guys a couple of galaxies away," Shyamalan jokes.

Rick Yune Lead Villian in James Bond 20!
    Tuesday, December 18, 2001 12:43 CST

Rick Yune ("The Fast and the Furious") will star as the lead villain in MGM's tentatively-titled "James Bond 20" for director Lee Tamahori, says The Hollywood Reporter. The film will begin shooting at the end of next month and continue through the spring. In addition, John Cleese and Judi Dench are reprising their roles as R and M, respectively.

The story involves a device enabling facial mutation, says the trade. Yune will star as a North Korean general named Zao, who is being tracked by Bond (Pierce Brosnan). Yune will don facial prosthetics for the part as his character comes across the mutating device and begins to undergo facial transformation. But the experiment goes awry, leaving him half-changed.
