I need some help from any Computer People:

I just got a Pacific Digital CD Re-Writeable Internal IDE Drive 8x/8x/24x

    This Drive is IDE Interface

Question is: Can you burn from CD to CD Drive with IDE Interface?

Someone at work just told me that IDE Interface works fine burning a music file from your hard drive to the disc, but not so well when copying from Disc to Disc.

He said that SCSI Interface works better.

Is this true? Will I be able to burn from CD to CD with the above mentioned IDE CD Drive?

    Thanks!

Mines IDE, never had any trouble burning anything, just dont max the speed out or you get clicks, i never burn faster than 2X just in case.. What sorta PC have you got, I think thats a factor with IDE... ZRAM, processer etc

Same as me... Should be OK, but just be careful on the faster speeds.. try it by all means, but be careful when you play them back.. listen for 'clicks' and 'pop's which kinda means your got it goin too fast.. trial and error so to speak.

I have heard of people having probs with IDE drives, but mines been fine.. it's a mitsui CR-4802TE (sold as a kodak)

Cool. So to be safe, better to Burn at like 2x maybe...?

This is a Christmas present for my parent's. It's actually their computer...

    Thanks Goo.

Funny I was trying to get a hold of a friend of mine who knows more about PC's then I. He lives here in Rochester NY but I can't get a hold of him...

Pretty funny I had better luck getting a hold of someone in Australia!...

    Thanks again!

    I'll give you the breakdown:

You SHOULD be able to do a CD to CD with an IDE drive. Just don't set the speed too high and don't do ANYTHING with your computer while it burns.

SCSI interface is worlds better (but more expensive). The reason being is because SCSI interface provides its own separate buffer (read: place to store junk temporarily), which means it is less CPU dependent. With the SCSI burner in my computer at home I can do virtually anything and not ruin the burn.

However, IDE relies on the resources your system already has, which means dividing them among other programs is not a good idea.

You should be fine with an IDE - you just don't have the same freedom that a SCSI user has.

I burn nearly everything at 2x... generally I set it to burn when I'm not using my PC as a precaution, but I have browsed and read emails... basic stuff like that with no probs, although I wouldnt try to run something 'heavy' like photoshop while Im burning.. but I dont really have many problems.. On a smaller specced PC I would guess it would be a bigger problem though!

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your imput on this. I think I will stick with this IDE Drive. with the speed of the processor my parent's have and the fact that they really don't do a LOT of different things with their PC at once, I think this burner will suffice.

I'll just have to remind them to be careful during the burn process not to be using up a lot of CPU Resources trying to do other things at the same time.

I never knew the differences between SCSI and IDE. Thanks for the info Stuff...And thanks for your help Goo as well!

You could get adventurous and if the motherboard in the PC has 2 IDE interfaces you can separate the drives between them. And everybody elses comments are right on (minimize the amount of things you do while the burning is going on and copy at slow speeds to reduce the opportunity for errors.

Use Maxell's as well. They are good. I never burn cd to cd. I close everything on my tool bar, use Adaptec , and copy everything to a wave. You will never have pops, clicks, or bleeps this way. I also do this at 4x without fail. A buddy of mine has that hot new TDK and he rips at 8x by doing the same thing I do. His cd's sound awesome. I used to have some strange noises copying cd to cd but ever since I copied the source cd to a wave file,I have never had that problem. Try it, it's easy.
