The same thing that was in Marcellus Wallace's briefcase in Pulp Fiction.

Seriously, the package was just there as a "mcguffin", a term coined by Alfred Hitchcock for a plot device or object that helps push the story along but is not necessarily part of the plot itself. What was in the box was not important, but what was on the outside was; in this case, the picture of a pair of wings with two golden rings around them. This artwork was inspirational to Chuck Nolland for attempting to get off the island. You'll even notice that he made the same drawing on his raft's "sail".

On a semi related note, does anyone else think that this movie sucked pretty hard?
Gozer the Traveller will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldronaii the Traveller came as a very large and moving Torb. Then of course in the third reconciliation of the last of the Meketrex supplicants they chose a new form for him, that of a Sloar. Many Shubs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Sloar that day I can tell you.

I thought the ending was sort of "awkward" and could have been written better. The main part of the movie which took place on the island, though, was phemoninally directed, paced, and acted, IMO. If not for the clunky ending, it would have been a great movie.

That's a film term that's new to me! Cool... thanks for sharing your knowledge guys!

I liked the film, but agree the ending was really awkward... But I think Hanks did an amazing job... Not easy to react when the only "person" you're talking to is a volleyball.

I didn't mind the ending so much, but I was glad it didn't take the predictable route of Tom Hanks ending up with Helen Hunt. I thought the movie was great! Satellite phone in the box? Divorce-proceedings, more like it! If you noticed, the box was from the sculptor's husband who looked like he left his wife for another woman and even left the country.

I thought it was average at best. All in all it was very boring especially when he's alone on the island.

Someone at work told me that on the DVD there is a hidden part where the director of the movie tells what was in the box. I hate to go out and rent it to find out, but I guess I'm going to have to. Probably was the phone and a Rambo survival knife. lol

LOL! I never knew this before. Here's how to do this if you have the DVD:

Insert the second disc from the 2-disc set and then select "Video and Stills Gallery" from the main menu. Once there, highlight the "Raft Escape" menu entry and hit the "Left" arrow key on your remote control. A winged symbol will appear on the screen. Press "Enter" now and in an audio clip director Robert Zemeckis will reveal to you the contents of the unopened FedEx package. It is quite funny, so make sure to check it out.
