With Napster apparently going down the shitter, I've seen audiogalaxy come up as an alternative.

    BE CAREFULL!!!

This software contains spyware. It installs a program on your PC that watches and reports your every move. Every site you visit and program you run is reported without you knowing it to....somewhere. Now, to be fair, it does not report you or any personal information. Basically you are part of a survey if you use this thing.

It also contains no way to uninstall it. I am convinced that my computer (running on win 98) took a shit from using this software and trying to delete it. I dont know how, but after reading the negative feedback it recieved on www.shareware.com , I realized other users were having similar problems.

As far as the program itself and its use for gathering mp3's, it has pluses and minuses when you compare with Napster. You dont get to see the bitrate (quality of mp3) of the song you are getting. One thing that is played as a good thing is, if you get cut off, it will automatically resume with another user that has the same file. The bad part about that is it makes pauses and pops in the track. And its reeeeeaal slow. More from the servers performance than the other user I believe.

Just letting you guys know. I think I got burned by this little AG satelite thing. Do your own research before you get it.

    You nailed it.

Bulletproof and cute ftp are good ones to use. Bulletproof is great for folks without a ton of ftp experience. You can pick up a slue of ftp stuff on shareware.com.

I've been using audiogalaxy for a while now, its not too bad, and has some advantages, some disadvantages. There is a way you can specify what bitrate of recording you want, although i cant remember it now - i think theres a 'confirm version' link or something, and that'll take you there

I havent tried this yet, but saw a lnk on a newsgroup - www.songspy.com - anyone had any luck with it (the site appears down now, but was up yesterday)

FTP trawling looks like coming back into vouge though

Theres nothing particularly unusual lbout these spy 'addons'.. although it would be nice to be asked!!

While I dont think theres really a problem regarding privacy, its (as I understand) just taking stats, the fact they do it without askings made me uninstall audiogalaxy. principals and shit.

I didnt have any trouble getting the webenhance thingy out though, just unisntalled via control panel. no worries.

Thanks for pointing it out seenbad. If they wanna survey me in future they can ask. better still they can pay me!

I use audio galaxy and have never had a problem except with the pop and cracking.....
but I basically download to see if I'm going to like the music, not for the quality,it does take forever to download though.

So, if I understand this correctly, they spy
    into your computer? WTF?
Isn't that like hacking? Someone please explain how this works.
I don't care if they know the sites I go to, but I don't want them actually "in" my computer. If that's the case....they know I'm posting about them right now

Has anyone using audio galaxy ever received this message when trying to pull from files:

MMJB caused a general protection fault in module MVDISP.DRV?

Shut my computer up but good this morning...

I've been to the links before, I just rarely think to post here.

I'm registered at the Dome and 99.9% of the posts are there, but I like everyone over here as well. Links is a very friendly place.

I'm also registered at the Army...but we won't go there.

What are some good ftp sites? I am using Audio Galaxy and it shits me how every time I start my computer it tries to log on. Does anybody know a way to stop this from happening?

And Seen, can't you just delete the directory so "uninstall" it?

That would work I guess, BUT the spy virus called WebHancer still remains. You actually need to purchase the webhancer product which contains an uninstaller to do the full job.
This is what one of the reviews had to say about it:

Although AudioGalaxy is a good program, DON'T GET IT no matter what. Sadly, the company is extremely sneaky and includes a spy virus with the program. When you try to remove the program to get rid of the spy, it destroys your network and internet capabilities. The only reason my computer is actually working right now is thanks to my dad's computer genius friend. Please spread the word. Audiogalaxy is a dangerous program. Most people probably don't realize that it's harmful, but if you read the fine print, you'll see that the company is being very sneaky. This kind of stuff is just sick, so don't download the program. Try something else like Rapigator or Gnutella. At least they don't destroy your computer.
