So it appears. The defending champs are hardly defending this year. The Kobe-Shaq feud. Shaq's injury. Kobe's recent wrist problems. Horace Grant's injury and age (35) (back surgery). Rick Fox's injury a few nights ago. Ron Harpers' age (37) and his playing as of late. The disappointing free agent pick (Rider). His substance problems as of late and his poor numbers. Their lack of defense and contribution from the bench and the team in general. And their record, 27 and 15, which if the trend continues, could rob them of homecourt advantage in the playoffs. I don't see a repeat. (although teams in the past have proven such hypothesis wrong i.e. the NY Yankees)

76s. I don't know. Iverson has been incredible this year. Yet, it takes more than one player to lead a team to a championship (even if you're MJ) The rock that holds them together, Toni Kukoc, has been injured lately. Playoffs speak louder than records (they are the best in the NBA thus far) Just look at the Chicago White Sox last season.

Portland Trail Blazers. I love those guys. The deepest team in the league. Cholk full of veterans and superstars. Pippen, Stoudamire ("mighty mouse"), Rasheed Wallace, Steve Smith, Arvydas Sabonis (greatest player to come out of Europe ever), Dale Davis, Bonzi Wells, and Shawn Kemp. Time and injuries will tell (Pippen is out on the injured list as is Sabonis)

Kings- Very dangerous team. these guys are one game behind of the Blazers. With veterans and stars like Chris Webber, Stuyacovik (spelling) Vlad Divac and Jason Williams anything is possible.

    What do you guys think?

I would be shocked if the Lakers or the Blazers were not NBA champs this year. What the heck happened to the Eastern Confrence?

Blazers, yes. Lakers, I'm not so sure. I've been following them lately on www.latimes.com
From what I've been reading, even Phil Jackson is clueless.

I'm glad to see the Lakers struggling. It seems like every team that wins the NBA championship crumbles the next year. Anyway, if my Sonics can't win it then I'll root for the Blazers.

how can you talk about the sixers like that? we got the best league record and were about to have the best winning streak ever !! iversons the man and the reason philly keeps winning is that the sixers are an iron man team..wilmington is phillys sister city so i get to see how even when the starting players are sick and injured they still play...p.s. i fuckin hate shaq the only reason he s good at basket ball is that he s so fuckin big !! no handle,no outside shots,no foul shooting ability, all he can do is sit under the hole and dunk it off the vert.....

OLO- Even if Pippen just comes back for the playoffs, or not at all, they're still fine. They've got tons of veterans. Perdue (4 rings, three w. Chicago and one w. Spurs), Sabonis (one of the greatest and most versatile centers of all time), Steve Smith, Dale Davis, and Shawn Kemp. Plus, they have a great coach not to mention the deepest team in the league w. tons of superstars i.e Bonzi Wells, Rasheed Wallace, Staudmire ("mighty mouse"), and Greg Anthony. Like I said, their only enemy is time and fate (i.e. the choke in game 7 last year)

    Rick S.-

No disrespect to the Sixers. They're got an amazing group of players (especially Iverson who I think is better than Kobe). Of all the teams in the east, they have the best chance of taking on the western juggernaut.
As for Shaq, I agree. Shaq is way over rated. The guy is bigger than everybody else (weight wise) He's built like a friggin' truck. No kidding he can power in and put the ball in from two feet away. big deal. Of all the centers, Wilt Chamberlin and Arvydas Sabonis tower over Shaq. Sabonis is ten times more versatile. He can put up threes, jumpers inside the arc, he can power his way in and put shots up from two feet away, and more importantly, he can shoot free throws. Shaq don't stand a chance against Portland. With Sabonis, Dale Davis ( more versatile), Shawn Kemp (more versatile even if he does like to eat alot), and Will Perdue (a veteran w. four rings). They can put three great centers and an aging veteran against Shaq (i.e. 24 fouls) Good luck Shaq

Fellas, Don't forget about my San Antonio Spurs. In case you don't remember they won the title two years ago with basically the same team and they are showing lately that they should not be taken lightly with road wins over Sacramento and Utah. David Robinson and Tim Duncan are the best one-two punch in basketball and they will be back in the finals this year.

Wait a second, comparing Arvydis Sabonis to Shaq and actually somehow coming to the conclusion Sabonis is better???? Maybe 18 years ago he could have played Shaq, but he's pathetically slow, can't jump and can't block shots anymore. Yes he can shoot and pass, but Shaq is certainly no slouch passing, he led all centers in assists last year, so stop ragging him.

Allen Iverson is a freakin' dick and a thug, and is not better than Kobe in any facet of the game. He's a liability defensively, he is always getting hurt because of his agressive game, and he's a complete head case. Kobe and Shaq are overrated, yet are World Champs. Give credit where credit is due, they are both great players who won a championship with literally nothing around them.

The Lakers get Shaq back, regain some focus, things will be fine. The Blazers aren't exactly setting the world on fire and you guys can't be serious about Sacramento.

In the East I like Philly, but the East is really bad this season, they have NO competition.

Listen you, Shaq is an academy award caliber actor, did you seen Kazaam or whatever that was called? Come on, he's the next Tom Hanks, he's so versatile.

Wait a second, what best win streak ever? What that little 13-game winning streak on the road? What record is that, the Lakers won 16 in a row last year my brotha.

Look I don't care if Iverson made a rap record, he's not a thug because of that, he was a thug and headcase well before and after that. Just remember who taught the Sixers a lesson when they came to LA in December. They might have the best record, but they are 0-1 against the Lakes.

And the Blazers are 2 and 1 against the Lakers this year. Mark my words. When the smoke clears, it's gonna be Scottie (if his arm is okay) and Rasheed hoisting the trophy (like they should have last year). * Got to admit, Spurs are picking up the pace now. We'll see if it continues.
The Blazers choked last year and gave away the title. This time, they're out for blood. With the injuries and the age factor, not to mention a cast of mostly average players (like Mr. Venessa Williams, old man Harper (37) (once great player past his prime), old man Horace (35 almost 36) (ditto), Fisher , Shaw, and a few crapy white guys.) LA is goin' down. Shazam (if he makes it back) and Kobe "MJ Wanna Be" Bryant can score 65 points combined, but it ain't gonna matter.
