Spielberg Talks More Indiana Jones 4
    Sunday, February 16, 2003 10:23 CST

DreamWorks Fansite reports that the new issue of Cinescape magazine included quotes from Steven Spielberg on Indiana Jones 4.

Spielberg confirmed that Sean Connery, Karen Allen and Kate Capshaw will indeed return. Connery will have a small role, appearing in the beginning and towards the end of the film, he added. The leading females will also make appearances but not as lengthy as their original roles.

He did not mention a shooting date for the film, we'll have to wait and see if the project gets going this year or next.

    Daredevil's Costume Tests
    Monday, February 17, 2003 9:21 CST

Will director Mark Steven Johnson include costume screen tests for Daredevil on the DVD? The Calgary Sun reports:

Johnson hasn't decided yet whether the DVD release will feature footage of some of the earlier versions of the Daredevil costume.

"The costume went through several incarnations.

"Ben was very good about doing tests with each of them, even though he knew some of them were not working at all," recalls Johnson.

There was actually an early version that was "a red spandex devil suit but we didn't want Ben to look foolish."

Johnson finally hit on the idea of putting Daredevil in a red leather motorcycle outfit.

"I ride motorcycles and I know what leather does to protect the body."

    Coolio's Lost Daredevil Footage
    Monday, February 17, 2003 9:19 CST

What happened to Coolio's footage in the Daredevil movie? The Calgary Sun reports:

You'll see rapper Coolio's name in the credits for Daredevil, but you won't see his face in the movie.

According to the film's writer and director, Mark Steven Johnson, it seemed like a cool idea to have a major subplot involving a character named Daunte Jackson in the superhero adventure.

By day, avenger Daredevil is the blind lawyer Matt Murdock. Johnson wanted to show what a good lawyer he is, so he created a storyline in which Murdock (Ben Affleck) and his assistant Franklin Nelson (Jon Favreau) were trying to prove their client Daunte Jackson was innocent of his murder charge.

"They actually go out and do the investigating themselves. It shows a very important side to Matt's character.

"He is as much the champion of the innocent by day as he is by night," explains Johnson.

This subplot is just 20 minutes of film footage that will end up on the DVD version of Daredevil.

"You'll see a very different movie on the DVD. We had to tone down quite a bit of the violence to get our PG rating for the cinema release, and there are important scenes for each of the major characters that had to be trimmed."

The newly reunited Gin Blossoms are working on a comeback album that they hope to finish this year. The band, which split in 1997 after two albums, is currently on a U.S. tour.
"We've got a handful of songs that we're kicking around, and I guess while we're on the road we'll find out how well they live and breathe," says guitarist Jesse Valenzuela.

The Tempe, Arizona-based group -- also featuring vocalist Robin Wilson, bassist Bill Leen, guitarist Scott Johnson and drummer Scott Kusmarek (who takes over for Phillip Rhodes) -- is undaunted despite being without a record deal.

"With no label, I suppose making this album will fall back on us in some way, but that's fine with me," says Valenzuela. "I've got a million ideas. Robin and I haven't begun collaborating yet, but we'll probably be opening that can of worms in the next few days, doing a little hotel room work."

John Hampton, the group's longtime producer, has expressed interest in recording the band again. "He basically said, 'Whatever you guys want to do, we'll go ahead and take care of it,'" Valenzuela says.

The band's original rise to fame was bittersweet. Guitarist Douglas Hopkins, who penned the band's first two hits, "Hey Jealousy" and "Found Out About You," had been kicked out of the Blossoms before they recorded their 1992 debut, New Miserable Experience, because of his ever-worsening bouts of depression and alcoholism. On December 5, 1993 -- as his songs were in heavy rotation on rock radio stations across the country -- he shot and killed himself.

The album would go on to sell over four million copies, but the Blossoms would have to pen their subsequent material without Hopkins. They got off to an impressive start with "Til I Hear it From You," written by Valenzuela, Wilson and Marshall Crenshaw for the Empire Records soundtrack. However, after the lukewarm reception that greeted 1996's aptly titled Congratulations . . . I'm Sorry, the band called it quits.

"Even though [Congratulations . . . I'm Sorry] was gold and on its way to going platinum and we had just come off of a big first record, I just don't think that we ever got over losing Doug," Valenzuela says. "Robin was itching to try his own thing without having to ask the permission of the rest of us, and that coupled with the huge sadness of Doug's death created internal pressures that seemed too difficult to surmount."

During their four years apart, Wilson formed the Gas Giants, who got lost in the Polygram/Universal merger of 1998. They managed to release an album, 2000's From the Back Burner, but their new label, Atomic Pop, went under soon afterwards. Wilson went on to form another band, the Poppin Wheelies, and launched his own label, Uranus Labs. Meanwhile, Valenzuela formed the Low/Watts, but eventually moved to Los Angeles to concentrate on session work, music production and songwriting.

The Gin Blossoms first regrouped for a millennial New Year's Eve show in Tempe, and, after a couple more shows in 2001, launched a sixty-date U.S. tour last year. An expanded version of New Miserable Experience and a live DVD, Just South of Nowhere, were released last year.

The band will also be on the road for much of 2003. "There's a summer tour in the works," Valenzuela says. "I'm sure we'll be part of some glorious Nineties rock package, but I guess there's safety in numbers."

NEWS - Dave Matthews Band To Release Film, DVD Boxed Set
    02/16/2003

(2/16/03, 10 a.m. ET) -- The Dave Matthews Band intends to release a DVD boxed set of concert footage from shows in 2002. Three shows at the Gorge Amphitheatre in George, Washington, were recorded last fall for the DVD set, which will be followed by a long-form video that will play in theaters, according to United Entertainment Media's Creative Planet Communities reports.

All three September 2002 Gorge concerts were recorded using 14 high-definition video cameras, capturing more than 100 hours of footage. A theatrical release is reportedly planned, with a long-form concert video to play in theaters equipped with high-definition projectors. The DVD boxed set will be issued via RCA, and is scheduled to be available later this year.

The Dave Matthews Band has released several collections of live material over the years. And while fans may have their opinion as to which is best, Matthews admits that it's difficult for him to judge the band's shows. "We'll have a show where the whole band will get off the stage and we'll be feeling, like, 'God that was awesome. That was just so smoking,'" Matthews said. "And then I'll talk to the sound or we'll talk to the soundman, and he'll go, 'It was OK. That wasn't great--it was OK. It had some trouble.' And then some nights we'll all be a little winded after the show and we'll talk to one of the guys in the crew or to the soundman Jeff, and they'll be, like, 'That was one of the best shows that we've had.' And then you're [thinking], 'Well, that's too bad,' 'cause then it makes you think that you don't know what the hell's happening."

The eighth installment of Ozzfest will boast Korn, Marilyn Manson, and Disturbed among its mainstage acts, a source tells Billboard.com. The annual hard rock festival tour will kick off in June and will, according to the official Ozzfest Web site, once again visit England as well as trek across North America. Full details are to be revealed on Tuesday (Feb. 18).

Last year's edition of the tour featured the tour's namesake Ozzy Osbourne headlining, as well as System Of A Down, Rob Zombie, P.O.D., Chevelle, and many other bands.

The tour's initial two dates were scotched when Osbourne's wife and manager, Sharon, was diagnosed with colon cancer. Ozzy later left the tour for several shows while she was undergoing chemotherapy.

Another tragedy struck during the tour when Drowning Pool frontman Dave Williams was found dead on the band's tour bus when it reached the Manassas, Va., stop on the tour. An autopsy determined he died of natural causes.

Last summer's version of Ozzfest was the lone festival package among the top-25 grossing tours of 2002, grossing $24.5 million.

    Monday, February 17, 2003 9:31 CST

HBO has agreed to pay $15 million for the exclusive pay TV rights to Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, reports Variety.

The deal also encompasses exclusive windows for HBO on the previous four "Star Wars" movies and a first negotiating position on Star Wars: Episode III, which is in the early stages of pre-production.

New Animated Dick Tracy Series Coming
    Monday, February 17, 2003 11:23 CST

The Hollywood Reporter says that crime fighter Dick Tracy will soon be animated...

Tough guy Dick Tracy, the cartoon detective who first hit the newspaper comic pages back in 1931, is setting out on new crime-busting adventures in a cartoon series announced by Los Angeles-based animation house Film Roman. Plans for the animated series have been firmed up under a deal between Film Roman and Classic Media, the New-York-based family entertainment company that is also home to such classic characters as Lassie and Casper the Friendly Ghost.

The new Dick Tracy series will set the square-jawed crime fighter on the trail of a new crop of law-breaking villains and, of course, will feature Tracy's array of detective gadgets, including the famous wrist radio.

Dick Tracy was originally created by Chester Gould in 1931 and went on to become a major franchise for publishing, radio and film in the 1940s and '50s. In 1960, UPA Studios, best-known for its animated characters Mr. Magoo and Gerald McGoing Boing, produced a series of 130 five-minute cartoon television episodes that ran in syndication through the 1990s. The new series will look to capture the style of the original UPA series, according to an announcement from Classic Media and Film Roman.

Daredevil 2 & Elektra Moving Forward!
    Monday, February 17, 2003 2:33 CST

Comics Continuum spoke with Daredevil producer Gary Foster who says that the box office results mean that plans for a sequel and an Elektra spin-off will continue...

"We're very happy with things," Foster told The Continuum on Monday morning. "DD2 moves ahead, as does Elektra. Too early to know what goes first, but we are certainly going to get scripts going. All the cast, except Colin (Farrell, who played Bullseye), are signed up for sequel."

Would You Like The Hulk Super-Sized?!
    Monday, February 17, 2003 9:57 CST

Hey Hypsters, here's an inside scoop for ya! Have you really taken a good look at that green guy in The Hulk trailers? Look again.

You already knew that you shouldn't make the Hulk angry, but did you know that the madder he gets the bigger he gets as well? The clever folks behind the production are making the Hulk go through 3 different sizes (stages) in the upcoming Universal film. As the Hulk gets madder, he gets bigger. So let's hope Sam Elliott, aka General Ross, isn't too hard on him - who knows what would happen!

ALICE IN CHAINS: STALEY Biography Includes Personal Drawings, Letters - Feb. 17, 2003

Hot on the heels of Kurt Cobain's "Journals", a biography of late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley, dubbed "Angry Chair", chronicles the singer's heroin addiction and his death by overdose and includes Staley's last interview, photos and personal drawings and letters from his journal. Author Adriana Rubio began the book with the Staley family's blessings, but the singer's mom later said it "lacked concern for basic human dignity" and withdrew support, according to Rolling Stone. Rubio isn't surprised: "Even apart from his drug use, Layne's life was so sad."

For more information, including a sampling of Staley's art, poems, and photos, visit the project's official web site at this link.

John Goodman told Cindy Pearlman that there won't be a sequel to "Monsters Inc". Says Goodman, "As far as I know, the guys at Pixar are opposed to a Monsters Inc sequel. They said there's no reason to do one unless someone comes up with a really good second storyline. I think they're more interested in doing little shorts like Mike's new Car, which featured Sulley".

    From www.melodicrock.com

PLANET US PROJECT IN LIMBO, JOURNEY BACK IN TOUR:
Great excitement was generated with the announcement last year of the Planet Us project, featuring Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Neal Schon and Deen Castronovo. Former Guns N Roses guitarist Slash was also lined up to feature in the line-up, but declined at the last minute.
The band had major label interest and were commissioned by Sony to record one track for possible inclusion on the Spiderman movie / soundtrack.
The guys recorded 2 demos - Peeping Through A Hole and Vertigo, which was later rejected for that soundtrack spot, apparently for being "too heavy".
A decision to record an album and shop it around, or release it independently was made, but most recently those plans were put on hold.
Sammy Hagar recently stated that due to busy schedules, the project was on hold. True to a point, but the truth is it seems unlikely that an album will ever be recorded or released.
No one will comment officially to me on the future plans of the band, but I know for a fact that while two members of the group are pushing for the project to continue, the other two are not.
It seems that without the interest or investment from a major label, the motivation to record an album that would have no immediate purpose is not there.
The real losers from this are the fans. I hope that this 'on hold' status is not permanent and that one day we will hear a collaboration between these 4 talented musicians.
