Someone tried to hack me last week. and my computer security stopped them and gave me an IP address

Plug in the IP and see what it finds. You should be able to use this to identify the offenders ISP, and you can contatct them and complain. Bear in mind however some hackers have ways of faking their source IP, but its about the only thing you can do.

Also, a lot of 'attacks' aren't even that. They're just other internet functions you might have initiated but that your software doesn't recognize.

Don’t go too nuts about it. My band’s site gets 3 or 4 attempts a day. Most of them are what are called “script kiddies” which is a term used for the immature computer generation that run automated scripts all day long. Whenever they get a chance, they check their scripts for those sites that gave them access. Most of the scripts are aimed at NT based sites, but not all.

Nonethelessiveness, the ISP’s (if reputable) are generally VERY interested in this type of behavior and they will come down on the individual if they are notified, since this type of behavior also puts them at risk. Do what Goo said and report it. The chances of you finding out the individual that did it are usually less than none.

Peace!

I've used Arin: WhoIs
and
TraceRT
and
RipeNCC

There's a bunch of them out there... but you might not even be able to trace the culprit down (if it really was a culprit like MikeL suggested), if they have a static ISP like AOL or the like.

It's a tough game to play. The one or two times I've had to use it, it's worked for me. BUT if someone really was hacking into your system, they've more then likely routed their ID through so many other sources that you might never be able to track them down.

My guess is that, like MikeL suggested... it was probably something that your system does to update, but that your firewall won't recognize as legitimate

NEOTrace is cool.

LA, AOL has DYNAMIC IPs.
CHICAGO WHITE SOX - 2005 WORLD CHAMPIONS

The Chicago White Sox (1901-present) - The Original SOX - Proof

The Boston Americans (1901)
The Boston Somersets (1902)
The Boston Pilgrims (1903-1906)
The Boston Red Sox (1907-present) - Proof

The Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets whatever you want to call them, have NEVER displayed "SOX" anywhere on their caps, jerseys, or merchandise, therefore they shouldn't be referred to as such. However, the White Sox have used "SOX" since 1912.

The SOX are in Chicago...we just allow the Pilgrims/Americans/Somersets to use the name.
