Packers fullback charged with burglary in Miami
    July 8, 2002
    SportsLine.com wire reports

MIAMI -- Green Bay Packers fullback Najeh Davenport was arrested Monday, accused of breaking into a university dormitory and defecating in a woman's closet.

Davenport, 23, surrendered to police Monday and was charged with a second-degree felony count of burglary and a misdemeanor count of criminal mischief, said Richard Master, a Miami Shores police spokesman.

The former University of Miami player was wanted on a warrant issued in April. He was released Monday from a Miami-Dade County jail after posting a $6,500 bond. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.

"This whole thing is a misunderstanding. Najeh had nothing to do with the situation," said Richard Sharpstein, Davenport's attorney.

According to police, Davenport crept into a dorm room at Barry University around 6 a.m. on April 1. A woman sleeping in the room, Mary McCarthy, told police she was startled by a strange sound and saw Davenport squatting in her closet. Davenport then allegedly defecated in a laundry basket, McCarthy told detectives.

McCarthy told police she didn't know Davenport. Campus security identified the football player from a picture in the University of Miami yearbook.

Sharpstein said he was confident authorities would drop the charges against his client.

The Packers released a statement Monday saying team officials have spoken to Davenport about the allegations.

"It would be inappropriate for us to comment further on this matter, however, until the legal system has run its course," the statement read.

The 6-foot-2, 248-pound Davenport was selected by the Packers in the fourth round of the NFL Draft.

Unser Jr. arrested on domestic battery charge
    July 9, 2002
    SportsLine.com wire reports

INDIANAPOLIS -- Al Unser Jr. was charged with domestic battery early Tuesday after a woman accused the two-time Indianapolis 500 winner of hitting her and leaving her on the side of an interstate highway.

The 40-year-old Unser was arrested at his motor home on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway infield, according to a police report.

Unser was released from the Marion County jail after posting a $30,000 bond. He avoided reporters by leaving through a tunnel to a neighboring building.

A court hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, sheriff's Maj. Vincent Cascella said.

Officials with Unser's Indy Racing League team were still gathering information about the arrest and had no immediate comment, Kelley Racing spokeswoman Nancy Miller said. A telephone message left for Unser's attorney, James Voyles, was not immediately returned.

Police reported finding Jena L. Soto standing next to a guardrail on Interstate 465 at about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. Soto told police she was Unser's girlfriend of four years.

The 38-year-old Soto, of Albuquerque, N.M., told police she and Unser had been at a strip club and that she was driving because Unser was intoxicated. She said she and Unser were arguing, and that he repeatedly shifted the gears into neutral and reverse. She said she then hit Unser in an attempt to make him stop and he responded by hitting her in the face.

Soto told police she pulled to the side of the highway, got out of the vehicle, and that Unser then drove away.

Unser first denied knowing Soto, according to a police report. After being told of her allegations, officers said Unser told them Soto had hit him first.

Unser, the winner of the Indy 500 in 1992 and '94, is divorced.

Unser was scheduled to play in a charity golf tournament Thursday at the speedway's course and then drive Saturday in an IROC race at Chicagoland Speedway, Miller said.

A NFL player arrested? Who would have thunk? I heard something on the Jim Rome show a while back that mentioned a staggering % of NFL players having criminal records. Very sad that pro athletes with all their advantages in life still think there above the law.

    Another Day more Busts

Niners cornerback charged with DUI in Miami
    July 9, 2002
    SportsLine.com wire reports

MIAMI -- San Francisco 49ers cornerback Michael Rumph was charged with driving under the influence after failing a breathalyzer test.

Miami Beach police stopped Rumph's vehicle at 4:20 a.m ET Saturday, then gave him a field sobriety test, which he failed, detective Bobby Hernandez said Tuesday.

Rumph, 22, was then given a breathalyzer exam, which he failed "by a small margin," said Hernandez, adding he could not immediately provide the exact reading Rumph registered. The legal limit for blood-alcohol level in the state of Florida is .08.

Rumph posted $1,500 bond Saturday afternoon and was expected to appear in court later this week. He was the first-round choice of the 49ers in the 2002 NFL draft, going 27th overall.

Attempts to reach Rumph were unsuccessful Tuesday. Someone who answered the phone at the Delray Beach home of Rumph's father hung up on a reporter, and it wasn't immediately clear if Rumph has hired an attorney.

Mike Rumph was San Francisco's No. 1 draft pick.
"We were dissapointed to hear the news," 49ers general manager Terry Donohue said Tuesday.

Rumph was a key member of the Miami national championship team last year. The 6-foot-2, 206-pound cornerback was considered one of the most physical players at the NCAA level.

He has taken part in minicamps with San Francisco, but has not signed a contract. Rumph is scheduled to begin training camp with the 49ers on July 21.

    Arrest Warrant for the Answer

Philly police want warrant for arrest of Iverson
    July 10, 2002
    SportsLine.com wire reports

PHILADELPHIA -- Police say they have enough evidence to arrest NBA All-Star Allen Iverson on charges he barged into a home with a gun and threatened two men while looking for his wife.

Philadelphia police planned to ask the district attorney Wednesday to approve charges against the Philadelphia 76ers star of aggravated assault and making terroristic threats.

"We feel there's enough evidence there now to do what we've got to do -- arrest him," said police Lt. Michael Chitwood.

If District Attorney Lynne Abraham approves the charges, a warrant would be issued and the Philadelphia guard would be asked to surrender, police said.

Prosecutors have not gotten word from police about Iverson, the district attorney's office said Tuesday night.

Police said Iverson has no gun permit and has not registered a gun in Pennsylvania.

Iverson, 27, has not commented publicly, and no one answered the intercom on Tuesday outside his suburban Philadelphia mansion.

The 76ers said Tuesday night they had been advised "charges are imminent."

"We will continue to support Allen while we await the outcome of these proceedings," the statement said.

Iverson's lawyer, Tom Shuttleworth, declined to comment Tuesday.

One man inside the apartment said Iverson came to look for his wife, Tawanna, and cousin, Shaun Bowman, on July 3. Bowman lives in the apartment, but neither was there, said Charles Jones, 21, who met with police Tuesday.

Jones declined to reveal what Iverson said or how he threatened him. Jones said Iverson had a black handgun but did not brandish it.

Iverson and his wife were married last summer, and they have two children.

Iverson was the league MVP in 2001, leading the 76ers to the NBA Finals for the first time in 18 years.

As a high schooler in 1993, Iverson was arrested in a Hampton, Va., bowling alley brawl and spent four months in prison before then-Gov. Douglas Wilder granted clemency. The Virginia Court of Appeals overturned the conviction in 1995.

In 1997, Iverson pleaded no contest to a gun charge after police in Richmond, Va., stopped a car in which he was a passenger and found a gun belonging to Iverson and two joints. He pleaded no contest to the gun charge, and a marijuana-possession charge was dropped. He was sentenced to probation.

In 2000, Iverson recorded a rap CD about violence and street life that was denounced by women, gays and league officials. He later apologized and agreed to soften the lyrics.

Arrested Bucks Robinson released on $5,000 bail
    July 21, 2002
    SportsLine.com wire reports

CHICAGO HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Milwaukee Bucks forward Glenn Robinson was released on $5,000 bail Sunday after being arrested for fighting with his ex-fiancee.

Robinson is expected to appear in court Aug. 19 for a preliminary hearing, according to Marcy O'Boyle, a spokeswoman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.

The No. 1 pick in the 1994 NBA Draft was arrested Saturday on charges of domestic battery, assault and illegal possession of a firearm.

O'Boyle said Robinson showed up at his ex-fiancee's house in Chicago Heights on Saturday and demanded to be let in. She refused at first, but Robinson was later let inside, O'Boyle said.

"He pushed and shoved his ex-fiancee," O'Boyle said.

Robinson had a gun when he was arrested, but did not have a valid Illinois Firearm Owner's Identification card, Chicago Heights Police Department Sgt. David Wierzbicki said.

A Bucks spokesman refused to comment on the arrest.
