Fox News: R. Kelly Indicted On Child Porn Charges

It's surprising that this doesn't happen more often in the music world. Though I remember the following story of Mick Jagger and Mackenzie Phillips (Jagger fantasized for 8 years , but did wait until she was legal):

    Former Child Star Central

" ... Mackenzie Phillips (One Day at a Time) learned to roll joints at age 10, stole her dad's drugs at age 12 and enjoyed (if that's the word) a one-night stand with aged Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger at age 18, the actress tells the March 13 edition of TV Guide. Of the Jagger fling, Phillips says it was a "wham-bam, bye-bye." That's not to say Mick wasn't excited. "I have been waiting for this since you were 10 years old," the rocker gushed, according to Phillips. "

Are artists inclined to avoid jailbait these days? Though this doesn't apply to R. Kelly (who is an R&B artist), the images I have of rock artists are like those shown in the movie Almost Famous with the frolicking, underaged groupies (er, "Band-Aids")...

Didn't read the article, but it's all over the Chicago news. 21 counts of sexual assault of a minor, and I think they were all the same minor.

One of the news stations here is doing a poll: Will you still purchase his music now that he's charged with child assault?

It seems the video that was turned over to the police (and subsequently to Quantico for verification of aunthenticty) has been available for sale from various sources. The police made sure to announce at their press conference that anyone in possession of that video is now in possession of child pornography. Issuing a warning it seems.

I have to correct myself... and don't want to hide it behind an edit... He was charged with 21 counts of child pornography NOT with sexual contact with a minor or however I worded it.

His mom's been on the news repeatedly here. She's claimed that it may be her son's head on the tapes, but it isn't his body... anybody can tell that it's been "digitally altered... pasting his head on someone else's body, and we can prove it... my boy wouldn't do that... he's a Christian."

Anyway you slice it, child porn is just plain sick.
Even before I became a father, that stuff just disgusted me.

She was 17 and she wanted to be there. This is much the same deal that Rob Lowe went through years ago.

I think that's why they didn't charge him with sexual contact with a minor or sexual abuse... only with possession of pornographic materials. I guess they figured that this way they'd be more likely to prosecute successfully.

It says in this article that the girl was only 14.

It also says that Kelly married the recently deceased Aaliyah when she was only 15!

Here's an amusing article from The Weekly Standard that probably reflects what more than a few of you here were thinking:

    R. Country:
    R. Kelly is now notorious. Are we supposed to have known that he was "famous" first?

    by Christopher Caldwell
    06/07/2002 12:00:00 AM

    Christopher Caldwell, senior editor

UH-OH! R. Kelly is in big trouble. He's been arrested for having made a dirty video with a 14-year-old girl. From the time I first heard the news on a drive-time talk show until yesterday morning, when I read about it in detail on page 1 of the New York Post, I've been unable to shake the same nagging question:

Who in the hell is R. Kelly?

According to the Post, he was accused of sexual activity with the teenager by the "unheralded rapper Stephanie 'Sparkle' Edwards." Nothing unheralded about R., though! He's a singer-songwriter who has enriched Our Cultural Heritage with "Feelin' On Yo' Booty" and other songs. (Bizarrely, no two news accounts seem to agree on whether his music is rap, rhythm 'n' blues, or soul.) He was previously married to the "pop star Aaliyah," who was decidedly heralded. She was much mourned in the Post and elsewhere when she was killed in a plane crash last winter.

But come to think of it, as Aaliyah's obsequies dragged on, I remember wondering who she was--and finding that no one I knew had ever heard of her, either. I had the same experience a couple years ago when the nation went into mourning over the Mexican singer Selena. Clearly there are famous people who just aren't that famous.

Most devoted readers of obituaries have noted the irony that one often sees there the names of people one had forgotten were alive in the first place. But these stories of R.-Aaliyah-Selena are something stranger still: They announce the end of a run of universal recognition for someone whom nobody recognizes.

Or at least nobody outside of a subculture of aficionados. For Selena's death to get front-page treatment in "Noticias de la Musica Mexicana" would excite no puzzlement--no more, at least, than if R.'s escapades were detailed in the "Booty Times." But why do these people get dragged out of their narrow marketing niches and cast as society-wide VIPs in whom we are all assumed to have taken an interest? It's that the Warholian absurdity has been pushed to its limit, as the media offers 15 minutes of (retrospective) fame to those it merely wants to push to top of the show because they've suffered something gruesome or done something kinky.

Christopher Caldwell is a senior editor at The Weekly Standard.

Had it not been for that corny "I Believe I Can Fly" Disney tune, I don't think I'd have known who the hell R. Kelley is, either.

    Excellent article!

In Chicago, cuz that's apparently his home, we hear about it every day. Today they announced that DCFS is investigating the parents for wrong-doing. It appears that this relationship was on-going with their permission. DCFS wants to know the story behind it. Did they allow this to take place knowingly, were there other motives of the parents for allowing their teenage daughter to become involved and continue to be involved with R. Kellly? If they find evidence of wrong-doing, they will remove the girl from their custody, and perhaps any other minor children. Thing is, isn't she 17 now?
